Maya Angelou and some of the people who know her best sit down with journalist Felix Augustine where some of her deepest secrets are uncovered like never before. Did you know Maya Angelou sang calypso? Amazing work from Sean Johnson, George Alexander, Chandra and my number one camera operator Andrew Baxter.

I had the extreme honor to meet Dr. Angelou at my job. I was chosen to stay late after work so she could be seen in our facility. She had a smile that I still FEEL today. Crazy thing is my mother raised me on her poems and books, and I’ve always felt like I knew her personally. I didn’t ask to be the person who got to stay behind to service her. I was chosen. When my mom was a student at Coppin State in Baltimore, I also had the pleasure of meeting Angela Davis, and Sonia Sanchez. I was 9 yrs old at the time. What makes all of this relevant is that I am now a spoken word artist/poet after going through so much pain. All of it unlocked my purpose. God has poignantly positioned me around the very ppl IN PERSON that inspired my life. Who can say they got the opportunity to be face to face with royalty? Powerful women. Absolutely phenomenal! I LOVE YOU DR. MAYA ANGELOU! ❤️

In elementary school I used to be the lead Actress in several Plays. Then during middle school I won First Place in a Poetry contest. However, when I entered High School, I seemed to have lost my Voice. I did not lose it literally, like Maya did, but for some unknown reason, I ceased to contribute to the Arts at all. Now, after viewing this video, and after recently being encouraged by two of my Scholarly Author friends, to write again, I will slowly venture back into writing Poetry again. Thanks Maya, for helping me to find my inner voice once more. #Onward

I have a scar on my leg from a fall on a motorcycle I was trying to learn ride several decades ago. I look at it now with a kind of pride & fondness because not only had I survived the fall, it represented an obstacle I surmounted. Dr. Angelou (because I don't believe anyone commenting here has the right to call her by her 1st name), absorbed all her scars outside & ESPECIALLY inside, turned them around & made them beauty marks. Because ANY bitter sorrow you can make sweet is worth keeping. I never met her. But I miss her.

I agree. Dr. Maya Angelou must be in inspiration not only to the whole African American community, but to "women" in general. I discovered her when I picked her book " I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" in a University Library in France (1990), where I was studying French and English Literature (Classical Literature written in English language but from anywhere in the world). I thought it was a beautiful title for an autobiography and wanted to know the life-story hidden in those words. I was so fascinated by her personal story, I tried to find the sequel to that book, somehow never did. Seeing this video brought back memory of that back to me. Yes, she is an inspiration to follow your dreams, no matter what. A very positive and very humble person, a big charitable heart too --and that makes her a "beautiful" woman with a beautiful spirit to me, a true gift from God to all who really knew her, a true gift to the African-American community. I love you Ms. Maya Angelou, RIP. You'll always be an inspiration to women who struggle, knowing your life story gives them courage to "rise" and "rise" , not to "sit and curse the darkness" but to "try and light the match" to dissipate the darkness. Peace. ( woman from Haïti, now residing in St. Louis, MO. USA)

When she; Queen Maya says "if we had the courage to just touch one another....". just made me quiver because if we did, I mean all of us in this world strat doing that. I know racism would burn out or our hearts. It's a gift to have someone comfortable enough to touch your shoulder (that is a healing, a kind of sharing), guide you by your elbow, etc., is indeed a rare gift. It would be a very good sign of heightening- enlightenment if more people realized it in that manner. Enough said.

Vanessa Jones I was raped and vowed to silence. she thought his death was her fault. I quit speaking because I feared what harm telling could do. point and case, she loved her life, had no complaints, I feel the same way. our trauma turned to triumph and our pain pushed us to the fore front to be a beacon and a voice... we're never glad when bad things happen to good people. never should we allow it to define us either. Its all the bad and evil that made her who she was which enabled her to leave this great legacy message or documentary.

#DebbVaughan I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Angelou when she had a book signing in Oakland, California at Richardson's Book Store. Her brother Bailey Johnson and I were close literary friends and he introduced me to her. At the time he lived in Southern California but always made time to meet with me when he came to the Bay Area. I shared several poems with her, sent flowers and two of my favorite bookmarks. Can you imagine the excitement when I received a "thank you card" Maya Angrlou; and later a telephone call. Sorry, let me rewind back to the book signing. After purchasing my book I walked to the table where she was seated to get her autograph. When she asked for my name I told her, hoping I didn't sound nervous. She immediately glanced up at me and smiled, "oh, you're my brother Bailey Johnson's friend!" I replied "yes, how did you know?" She said very kindly that her brother told her about me and that she remembers his friends!" I couldn't wait to get home to call Bailey and let him know that met his dear sister and she remembered me. "Why not, you're my friend," he said. I am happy that I had the opportunity to know Bailey Johnson and so honored to have been introduced to his beautiful sister Dr. Maya Angelou. An awesome role model and teacher.

I got a kick out of her response to a TV audience member who had called her Maya. "And first, I’m Miss Angelou. I’m not ‘Maya.’ I’m 62-years-old. I’ve lived so long and tried so hard that a young woman like you, or any other, has no license to come up to me and call me by my first name.”

Got to say I thought that was a bit unkind - that young girl (who was clearly in awe of her), looked crushed, and of course meant no disrespect. Perhaps the way she prefers to be addressed ought to have been pre-warned, which would have prevented that uncomfortable encounter. That said, this is water well under the bridge now. She was an amazing woman with an incredible life story - having read ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ and all the subsequent parts of that auto-biography many times over the years, is there NOTHING she’s not done…and done exceptionally well?!

Everytime I’ve been down, it was a Maya Angelou quote that turned me around and lifted me up. God, bless this woman I wish I could’ve met her. Maybe I will see her in heaven. My biggest inspiration, words can’t even begin to describe the pain I’ve felt and how her wisdom has bounced off the page like a hand to pull me up out of darkness.

If I had to choose to have a role model to follow as a woman, Maya would be the one! She did so much for everyone because she loved her neighbours more than herself and because she was this humble, powerful, creative ball of energy and life that moved around the world and brought with her the positivity that marked every life that she touched! What a great woman Dr. Angelou was and will always be in our hearts and minds. She is alive forever because she belongs to the Kingdom of Heaven!
