Destiny's story and lore on the surface level seems incredibly shallow. However, when you dig deep into the grimoire, there's really a ton more about the world that we simply have no idea about if we never read the grimoire. Of course, there's plenty of stuff that ISN'T revealed by the grimoire as well. So, let's take some time to go over what has happened in the Destiny storyline thus far and discover WHY it happened and what caused it to happen.
So, the original concept for this video was to talk about how each of Destiny's expansions in terms of story feel like isolated events. Nothing really feels connected to each other, it doesn't feel like we are progressing towards anything. I feel like I'm just as dumb as the day that I started. We still barely know anything. It doesn't feel like we are learning anything new about the current situation in Destiny. Like what the Traveler is. Or what the Darkness is. Or what the HELL IS GOING ON PLEASE
While I started to write this, I started to reference lore bits and pieces and it just kinda turned into a summary of Destiny events. Thank you to my clanmate artsohc and to Byf for helping me proof this.
I really hope there aren't many mistakes in here. Preferably none.

As someone who knows way to much about the lore, I have a few small corrections 0:52 - "We don't know why we went into VoG" Grimoire Card 'The Black Garden' indicates the Speaker believes that the Vault of Glass does "hold powers the Progeny were meant to bring forth" therefore it is reasonable to assume that we enter the Vault under instruction from the Speaker to investigate and/or neutralise what these powers are. 1:40 - "What was the Black Heart?" from the books of Sorrow (particularly Verse 4:9 & 5:1) we see that when the Vex encountered the Hive they could not understand the power they wielded and reacted by taking samples and attempting to replicate it, the Black Garden is very likely one of these experiments with the Vex imitating Hive worshiping patterns. 11:52 "no motive for Skolas' release" this is a bit vague but there are two prevailing theories, #1 is simple revenge for something the Queen did to the Nine, maybe the Crows continuing to intrude into their territory as mentioned in Grimoire Card 'Ghost Fragment: The Queen" #2 is more complicated but looking at what the release of Skolas ultimately resulted in, closer ties between the City and the Reef and most importantly Skolas telling the Queen Oryx was coming in Grimoire Card 'Queen's Ransom' it is possible the Nine started of this whole chain of events to ensure that we would be in a position to defeat Oryx when the time came. (I personally subscribe to #2) But overall very good lore video Datto, nicely done.

Nice theories and great information thanks. I would like to add on about the nine releasing Skolas. There is actually a theory that the Awoken wanted to repay for intruding into the territory ( as you stated) as a gift for the Nine.
@OoMNagent
@OoMNagent 8 жыл бұрын
That is indeed why the Queen gave Skolas to the Nine, I'm just suggesting that might also be the reason why they returned the favour, either because Uldren kept sending Crows into their territory or they found the payment unsatisfactory.

I've watched countless destiny lore videos and read tons of posts... This is by far the best one I've seen. You pull everything together in a tetris level 9 like way where the pieces fit together wonderfully and in rapid succession. Thank you Datto. I had heard from other youtubers and friends that you were the best destiny source but never stumbled across your videos until this past week and I am impressed. With as many great things as I had heard... They didn't even do justice to how much better your videos actually are. Wow. Just wow.

To understand the Hive, you need to understand the idea of 'Sword Logic'. In simple terms, it's survival of the fittest on steroids. You only have the right to exist if you are utterly more ruthless than everything else. And if everything else is dead how can they oppose your will? This thus makes what you speak more true, as there is no-one alive to deny it. Eventually the Hive pantheon (Oryx, Xivu Arath, Savathun) became so powerful through this logic that not even the laws of space and matter could resist their will, and so allowed them to do the what should be impossible and create an Ascendant realm. The end goal for the Hive is to become synonymous with death and the end of everything, for if they do so they will be immortal. And regarding Savathun's treachery via telling Crota to cut a hole into the Ascendant realm I would argue that comes from 2 things. Firstly when the 3 sisters took the larvae of the Worm Gods into themselves, they were given the clause that if they ever stopped obeying their natures they would be consumed by their worm. Savathun's nature was cunning, so in addition of the need to satiate the worm via slaughter she needs to continue to be ever cunning, hence the manipulation of Crota to undermine Oryx. The second reason is that to spare anyone from the Sword Logic, even 'loved ones', is a weakness which is forbidden. Your continued existence is only allowed if you can still prove you are mighty enough TO exist, and the proof of might will never cease until there is nothing left to challenge it. Because of this the Hive pantheon will always test each other's strength, for if they fail these tests then by the Sword Logic they do not deserve to exist.

Skolas was released by The Nine because they knew Oryx was coming to Sol and the only way to halt his fleet would be if The City and The Reef were united. They predicted that Skolas' rebellion would cause Mara Sov to call upon the aid of The City and its Guardians, reopening communications between the two establishments.

the lore for destiny is amazing, honestly one of the best history/stories in a game but there is virtually no story telling in the game! it's just like "oh this bad guy did something bad, go kill him" or "oh we killed his son and now he wants to kill us, let's kill him" i wish they would actually incorporate more story telling! not expecting anything different for rise of iron but fingers crossed for destiny 2! hopefully bungie can see that the community wants more actual story telling done and they focus on that a lot more!

+william kirby also, most of the complicated in depth lore takes place in drastically different areas in the timeline. The oryx story starts out billions of years ago. The wars all take place years apart from each other. I could go on and on. All I want is an in-game library that holds our grimoire.

From reading the Books of Sorrow, I would say that Oryx did love his/her (Books say he's trams, but it's an alien so whatever the fuck you wanna imagine down there) family, but they must follow sword logic meaning they have to basically fight everything living and representing hope to survive even their selves and if one dies then to them that means they do not deserve to live anymore.

From a storytelling point of view, I feel like the way the story is told is actually very interesting. Were it a finished book (as we're only 20% of the way through at best) I don't think a lot of the complaints would pop up. It honestly feels very much like Clancy's works; they would start with some early unconnected events that spiraled outwards and intermingled to form the plot. For example, in one book where a war was started, one of the initial triggering event was... a car crash. Between some totally irrelevant characters; I don't even think one driver got a name and the other only existed for the page or two that this crash happened on. That's sort of the feel that I got from playing Destiny, and I think if we could actually play from start to finish and see the whole massive storyline unfold, it would get better. But we haven't been able to yet, of course, because it's not done yet. It also feels sort of indicative of your Guardian's rise through the ranks. In vanilla Destiny you're just a random soldier, operating pretty much independently following your own trail of breadcrumbs. There's not a lot of story, and while most or all of that might just be that the team was still figuring out how to tell its story, it sort of feels like "there is no explanation because /you don't know/". You're not privy to whatever the Vanguard knows, and you're only learning what the Guardian and his Dinklebot/Nolandroid can learn themselves. Come The Dark Below, you're still working very much outside the system, but the person you're working with does actually know what's going on, so you get as much story as Eris is willing to share. Still just a random soldier, but you have a person with a vested interest in telling you just enough to keep you happy. Same thing for Petra and the House of Wolves; if you don't know that Mara Sovv can blast small planets open, Petra doesn't really care to tell you that. Varicks seems like he just enjoys being cryptic on top of all that. When we get to TTK though, the relationships have changed. The Vanguard is calling on you, personally. You're no longer the random soldier. You're the Hivebane, you're Crota's killer, and most importantly you're the one Oryx personally wants dead. You get access to a lot more /stuff/ simply because the Vanguard suddenly needs you and Oryx isn't some vague thing that you read about and decided was a problem, he's coming to you. The story gets a lot more in-depth and personal because now the story is actually about you, and you're put in a place that's steeped in Taken/Hive history to fill in the background. Looking at the big picture I guess: "Why did we kill Atheon?" Because we found a bunch of cryptic references to this Vault of Glass place, decided it was worth investigating, and poked our nose in. "Why did we kill Crota?" Because Eris fed us a sob story and asked us to. "Why did we kill Skolas?" Because Mara Sovv asked us to, and we owed her. "Why did we kill Oryx?" Because /he/ went out of his way to pick a fight with /us/. Each time it gets a little more personal. From a storytelling perspective that's actually pretty cool, even if it can get really frustrating when actually playing sometimes.

I like how you brought this up. I believe we actually killed omnigul. However, this logic is used with ir yut. When we kill her, were in Crotas realm, not hers. So she actually doesn't have a "true death". This is why she re-appears in the mission "Last Rites". She is able to survive because we never killed her in her realm. Great observation with omnigul btw.

Well, the presentation is certainly different than the kind I usually listen to, but I like it. Obviously, this is watered down and doesn't take into account the *MYRIAD* of little details that could be connected to each other from the various sources, ranging from Grimoire Cards to even the descriptions of weapons and armor pieces.

Two things. Firstly, House of Wolves connects The Dark Below and the Taken King because after captured, Skolas mutters "Light-Eater" to the Queen, informing her and Erris that Oryx was headed for the system. Secondly, for anyone wondering about the origin of Oryx Datto alluded to in the video, here it is. Oryx was born as Aurash, a female of the species that would one day become the Hive. The proto-Hive species lived on the floating continents of the gas giant Fundament. Their father, the King of one of the continents, was murdered by the sister's tutor in order to become the new queen. Escaping and swearing revenge, the sisters found a ship designed to dive into Fundament's liquid core. Aurash and his sisters decided to search the core for a power that might help them again revenge. In the core they found the Worm Gods, who offered the sisters immortality if they agreed to act as hosts to the Worm's larvae. Each sister was given a morph according to her nature; Aurash's morph was the King morph, which transformed him into a male and renamed him Auryx, King of the Hive. Later down the line, realizing that his gift was not true power because it was given and not taken, Auryx murdered his patron Worm God to take power by force. In doing this he was able to convene directly with the Darkness, gain the power to Take the will of others, and became Oryx, the Taken King. And do think they could have put some of this in game instead of hiding it online.

I'm so glad you made this video. My main questions for Destiny for so long have been: What WAS the Black Heart, what was it's significance - what was the significance of us defeating it? How does it relate to the Vex - WHY?! Why is anything we did important?! Context. I need context!

This video is amazing!! In case you want to make a second one, you can talk about some lore of the city, like the last word vs. thorn, the battle of twilight gap, saint-14, Osiris, the iron lords (RoI lore, you saw it here first!) etc. The average player of Destiny doesn't have any idea of some of these things. It's a shame that the story is so poorly told to us, because the game has actually a great universe.

Also, so many side stories which can be whole expansions, but the main story of expansion (reclaiming planets and reaching a new golden age) feels like it is slowly and surely building up. It might happen in a HUGE event that causes the Traveler to somewhat or fully revive and spark a new age. Also, the Nine and even other galaxies are interesting since it's so mysterious. If this gets to the point where we discover the origin of the Traveler and the Hive, it might be amazing.
