I have an older brother with Asperger’s and two twin sisters with classical autism, the youngest of which is incredibly severe, mostly nonverbal and dual-diagnosed with debilitating mood disorders. My family has also faced a lot of misconceptions, judgements and stereotypes about autism, and we’ve had very similar experiences to the one this mama detailed over the years, especially in public settings like the grocery store and as my sister has gotten older (18 in a month) to the point that I have debilitating anxiety whenever we enter a store together. No, I am not ashamed of my sister; I am scared of the world around her and how they treat her. I’ve found that there are a lot of these people who can’t distinguish autism meltdowns from tantrums, and who think even the latter in children with and without autism are the result of inadequate punishment. A lot of people think that autism can be punished out of a child, or that the child only has autism because of bad parenting, or that they just need to be thrown away and we can’t keep her - and we’ve taken this even from family members. I’ve heard people say all manner of things towards my sister and our family over the years. It’s also uncomfortable constantly being stared at, or in some cases, glared at, and having 911 and CPS called on us for my sister displaying traits of autism they’re uncomfortable with. Grown woman who’ve whined “my eeaaarsss,” and complained about the throat noises my sister makes when she’s happy, people who’ve call her “a rat,” as we left a pet shelter when we were younger to adopt a pet, an older man who told my sister to get away from him when she stood a foot or two away from him, etc, etc. Autism is still incredibly stigmatized and misunderstood. EDIT: Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this; I really appreciate it and it gives me hope :)

Autism Speaks: Please continue to advocate for your sisters by speaking up about their world of joy & struggles. Your advocacy makes a huge difference & impact. Hope you can someday share your sister's journey in writing a book or magazine article. You write with great knowledge & experience. Your caring nature shines through all these challenged faced. Negative comments from strangers are usually derived from sheer ignorance about how to treat children/adults on the Autism spectrum. Autism Speaks awareness programs will hopefully break all these ignorance bridges. I'm so greatful/ thankfulfor the "Autism Speaks" awareness talks/programs/movies that try to spread world wide awareness on how to handle Autism with love, grace & understanding. Well they should. I have yet to see a kid with “autism” or any other sensitive little shit diseases who had a good strong dad wooping that ass when their acted like this. My sister is supposedly autistic and I 10000% know that it is literally just because she wasn’t punished. These damn moms want to make it seem like a child’s mind is something that should be allowed to be making decisions. Well they’re not. They need to be guided and corrected. Not spoiled and asked how they feel. If this kid knew he would get his ass beat when he screamed like this, he wouldn’t freak out.
@gladysolvera6566
@gladysolvera6566 2 жыл бұрын
@@sorry2527 yes, parents should not spoiled their kids, even their kids with Autism ( is real is not a made "sensitive" thing). I am on board that you should correct naughtiness, however not ask and or care how your child feels is a very toxic trait. A kid will have Autism regardless of discipline, autism is genetic. As much as you'd like, discipline will NOT make your child less autistic, it just help when they are misbehaving. Some not all parents thinks their kids are incapable of understanding when they just need specific instructions. I have to say they are different levels of support when it comes to autism with level 3 meaning that they need a lot of support with understanding regular things so... please try to be more understanding.

Parents of autistic children don’t need to be more strong. Having autism doesn’t make you more difficult. Some kids with autism have difficulties but it’s not the autism that’s the problem. It’s the kids that are strong for working their hardest when everyone including you treat it like it’s really bad and they’re poor disabled kids who can’t do anything.

@Lisa Oney Autism is not something you just grow out of or cure. Either he didn't actually have it, or you abused him into pretending like he isn't struggling. Actual science, studies, research, etc etc etc, shows that you can't just cure it. You can't just cure most mental disorders or disabilities. You can ease them and make them easier to manage, but they don't just vanish. I hope for your sons sake, that he doesn't actually have it- because having you as a parent, who isn't supportive and willing to help them cope and manage, is going to severely mess him up and traumatize him. You don't get 'free' from Autism, and it isn't some horrific thing that you should be trying to cure. Love your son for who he is. Listen to doctors and professionals. Don't hurt your child. -Sincerely someone with Autism, a dual psychology/teaching major, and a trained teaching assistant that helps with special needs children, along with years of personal experience with friends and classmates

My son is on the spectrum as well and haircuts have always been an issue. He's very particular about how it's cut and will only wear a high and tight, but it has to look a certain way. My mom finally took him to her hair dresser with a picture of exactly what he wanted. She was amazing with him and talked with him about his favorite movies the whole time to distract him from the buzzing noise of the clippers which makes him anxious. They have the same conversations every time he goes but she always makes sure that he is happy and content while he's in her chair.

As someone that happens to be autistic, my hopes are restored when I see people treating us like human beings. Cause that's the point, we are not even seen as human beings by most people, so something so basic has to be celebrated. I'm happy he found someone that cares enough to make him comfortable and happy while she does her job, avoiding a possible meltdown (which can be very stressful and exhaustive for us).

As someone on the spectrum I hate news stories like this. It stigmatises that autistic people are incapable of doing everyday things and everyone with autism always needs help with stuff. Everyone with autism has their own individual problems they have to deal with but the way the talk about it in the media by putting ‘autism’ first makes people thing this is what autism is like for everyone. They don’t need to say the boy has autism they can just say he struggles with it.

That is so amazing and thoughtful! I have a kid with autism and I can't begin to tell you how many times we got dirty looks when he was acting out due to his inability to handle his surroundings. Kids with autism need support, care, kindness, and help! They need those around them to understand their condition, and work with them instead of against them. I applaud this person for taking the time and effort to help this little boy! I had a hair stylist one-time cut my autistic child's hair and he wasn't wanting to sit still and he was crying, and the hairdresser had this look on her face the entire time that she was being burdened and was annoyed by him instead of working with him and caring. She also said something inappropriate. So a BIG thank you to this hair dresser in the video!!!♥️♥️♥️♥️

@Rachelcookie321 I am also Autistic, but I can assure you that not everyone has it in some capacity- that's not how it works. I am a dual psychology/teaching major, trained as a teacher assistant with special education, and have been in many special ed classes and groups. The diagnosis is important because we ARE different. You may be high enough functioning that you don't struggle and need help, but almost every other person on the spectrum struggles in some capacity.. you literally have to, to get the diagnosis. There are criteria for getting diagnosed for that reason, so people who don't actually need help don't get it, but the people that do need help, are able to get it. People with mental health disorders and mental disabilities are diagnosed with things for a reason, not just to put a label, but because they genuinely struggle with things that most people do not. That's why it's so important for others to understand that they need to be patient and help if we need it. No, we are not infants, and we aren't incapable, and we shouldn't be treated as such, but we do have it harder than the majority of people, and that needs to be acknowledged.
