In this week's vlog you will see the interview that I did with DJ Jurgen about "Better Off Alone".
When Jurgen was only 12 years old, he started as a radio DJ for various pirate radio stations in The Netherlands. Later he became a DJ in the Dutch club scene as well. And he also started to release his own music not long after that. In 1998/1999 he had a worldwide hit with "Better Off Alone", a trance track that contains vocals by Judith Pronk a.k.a. Alice Deejay.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Personally DJ Jurgen should of gotten way more recognition for his brilliant creations Better Off Alone, It seems at the time it was a good idea to change it to Alice Deejay making it more popular and commercialized but it got so big who knows what cut DJ Jurgen got out of it. I hope it was worth it cause I hear horror stories with music industry contracts ripping off artists.

It's debatable whether or not she provided vocals for any of the singles. Back then producers were incessantly churning out new singles hoping for the next big dance hit. They worked with a pool of studio singers that sounded good and knew the process (we've seen this with VARIOUS projects, Corona and Whigfield are two of the best known examples). Given what the original video to Better Off Alone consisted of, I think that this record was another case of throwing spaghetti at the wall and then the back story being created AFTER it stuck, not before. Even now that they're back to doing 90s shows with the original Alice Deejay lineup, the vocals have been rerecorded (and used over and over) to provide the illusion of live singing, but was she actually ever the singer in the studio? I have doubts, but until the actual singer pipes up (though is probably sworn to secrecy by an NDA), we will never know for sure.
@UMBR.
@UMBR. 9 ай бұрын
@@DirtyZ Apparently the reason there are 2 music videos for Better Off Alone is that Judy missed her flight to where they were filming, so they had to have a model stand-in. However, Judy is now performing with a hand-held microphone, as opposed to a head-set microphone. This has me confused... is she singing live now? Another example of faces/models lip-syncing to a different person's vocals is Ian van Dahl's "Castles in the Sky". Cindy Mertens lip-synced in videos/performances to vocals by Marsha (Martine Theeuwen). Both Cindy and Marsha then got dropped and Annemie Coenen was brought in to lip-sync to Marsha's vocals, before they then recorded Annemie's vocals for a revised version of CitS.

Better Off Alone is one of the rare examples of modern melodies that will stick for years and years. Heck, even after 20 years we still got remixes.

I really need help, guys. Hello, it was 2002 or 2003 when I heard this Electronic/Dance song playing, once at a show called The Roof at channel MUN2. I also had it as an MP3 song as a remix played along with the Ecuador song I downloaded from a P2P program back in the day. Since then, I haven't heard it again but is stuck in my head. I have searched everywhere, and it's like it never existed. I know it was kind of famous song as I hearded playing in several occasions. Most likely it was Trance, Dance or Electronic song, same genre as Better off Alone or Sandstorm.. After researching the show The Roof, I was able to find out that DJ Tiesto seemed to be the only DJ that visited the show around 2002 and 2003. I believe he is the one that plays this song but I could be wrong. I even was able to find out a 15 minute video on youtube of when he played at The Roof, but it was only a small fraction of the 30 minute video. I don't know nothing about music and this might be stupid but I dont have another choice. The song sounds something like this. Da Da Da Daraaa Daraaa, Da Da Da Daraaa Raaaran. Or something like this TaTa Ta Taraaa Taraaa, Ta Ta Ta Taraaa Raran. I would be able to replicated a bit better with my voice if I make a little recording. But this is all I have. If someone knows the song I am please let me know. As I have been searching for it for over 20 years. I have listen to hours upon hours of music from that era. Its making me crazy is like it never existed. Has never come out at a movie, show, radio, no where, and it's been over 20 years. The song sounded really good. Like I mentioned earlier, it was as good as better off alone or sandstorm. Please, someone help me! Here is the video of the show I am talking about. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJiVZali07y3haM.htmlsi=SZSS1epcF1_feEyL

DJ Jurgen says he worked at Stads radio Den Haag. I remember that every year, this radio station from The Hague broadcasted ‘De flitsende 50’, a countdown of the best club hits of the year. In 1999, ‘Better off alone’ was in it so they interviewed DJ Jurgen. It was a really cool show, they asked to a lot of Dutch producers to say something, because they personally knew all these guys. I still have fragments of this show, somewhere on a casette.

I remember Jurgen for 3 songs that I really like and still love now. "Better off alone", "Higher and higher", and "AIDA 2000". When I started getting into the dance music scene these 3 songs changed my path. Huge fan of "Better off alone", Jurgen, and Alice Deejay and their impact on Dance Music. I really believe Alice Deejay's album "Who needs guitars anyway" became a huge success and really made a mark for dance music during that time frame. I still listen to the album, and dance music and I honestly believe that nothing compares to it.

@@muzikxpress So sad, it seems that something not so good happened there. Nice video by the way, glad to hear something about those ages when media wasn't a thing and acts were pretty far from the audience. Judith Pronk in an interview, I think the only interview she ever made after the split, when she was asked about it, she said "Those days are pretty much gone". However it seems that Judith and Alice DJ made some talks because the Instagram profile (the one that was trying to pretend since it's first days of made that the new girl was the singer since always) is now showing many pics of Judith Pronk and viceversa un Judith Pronk Instagram account. So fingers crossed for them.

The entire set was like a medley, for 40-50 minutes or whatever, non-stop. She was unworldly BEAUTIFUL, and really sweet. She laughed and squeezed my arm, when I was stunned, at a loss for words when I went over to her to say "hello," and thank her for Alice Deejay. I can still hear her laugh.

@muzikxpress Which instrumental version are you playing in the background of the video and what's the exact length of it ? I am only aware of 2 good instrumental versions, here's the length of the ones I know, 6 :39 and 5 :38, and is there any other official sounding instrumental versions ?, thanks.

Did I hear him say he didn't actually created this song by himself? He heard it from two guys in their studio above the club where he was playing, right? And he joined them because he could get this song to Wessel van Diepen, who could publish it. So, who were these 2 guys and shouldn't they get some credit for it?

If you check the credits on the CD Maxi and the vinyl of "Better Off Alone" you see that everybody who wrote / produced on the track got credited.

How I interpreted it, is that those 2 guys made "something else". And later they made several tracks "together", including Better Off Alone.
