As South Africa came out of isolation, it was ready to show its automotive production capabilities to the world. This meant building cars like the 3, 5, 7 and even the 8 Series. That didn't stop BMW SA from producing its very own special editions though, modifying the E34 540i with local specification and a 6-speed manual gearbox of which just 72 were available.

It wasn't just about the cars though as BMW SA started to push the boundaries of advertising and marketing. Who can forget the cheeky ads of the '90s where BMW would taunt its rivals?

My dad had an e36 318is, black on black, such a great car, it influenced me to get into my first BMW, I got an e36 325i, drove that for 2 years and then got a sizable salary increase and upgraded to a white e36 M3 German Spec, absolutely LOVED that car, so so good to blast from robot to robot or just cruise around town, even better on an open road trip...drove it from Joburg to CT and back twice and Joburg to the Natal South Coast and back 8 times, it always made me grin like a lunatic when I hit sea level and it went from a fast car to a ridiculously fast car... I`d cut off a nut to have another e36 M3 German Spec!

I use to swop cars like crazy jeep volvo vw audi honda ford alfa mercedes etc. but in 2013 I bought a F30 335i and I am still driving it and I love it I will only trade it for a F80 M3 and nothing else. Its such a drivers car nothing compares to bimmer

The BMW E34 5 series is still the best-looking BMW ever. It was also the last hand-built BMW.

The only BMW from the 90's I was in love with and huge fan off was the 850Ci , now that car was futuristic absolutely sublime.

Fascinating video. Just a suggestion but could you guys put chapters on some of your videos? I sometimes like to rewatch sections and it would be easier to find that way. Certainly not a complaint just a suggestion. Cheers
