Sian Evans is a Welsh singer / songwriter who already started her love for music at an early age. At the end of the 90s she met up with Mark Morrison and Darren Beale and they formed the act Kosheen. In 1999 the first Kosheen track “Yes Men” got released via Breakbeat Culture Records.
But the big breakthrough for Kosheen came 1 year later in the year 2000, when they released the track “Hide U”. It became a Top 10 hit in lots of different countries and besides a club hit, it was a popular track on radio as well. In the UK “Hide U” became the best Best Single at the Drum & Bass Awards in the year 2001.
After the release of “Hide U”, Kosheen had several other hits with tracks such as “Catch”, “Slip & Slide (Suicide)”, “Hungry” and “All In My Head” for example.
Besides her work with Kosheen, Sian did lots of collaborations with people such as Roger Shah, Paul Hazendonk, Jody Wisternoff, Chicane and perhaps her most known track is “Louder”, for which she worked together with DJ Fresh. In July 2011 “Louder” came out via Ministry Of Sound and it debuted at the number 1 position of the UK Singles Chart, the UK Dance Chart, the UK Indie Chart and also in the Scottish Charts.
Kosheen officially disbanded in 2016, but Sian remains the frontwoman, singer and songwriter of Kosheen and they're still active with touring. Right before their last show from their Dutch tour, I sat down with Sian to ask her about the story behind “Hide U” and more.

Remember the white labels of creamers mix of hide u dropping everyone scrambling around record stores hunting copies, I found a store in the middle of Cheshire that had one left. Boss's tune, boss times

@@muzikxpress back then it was harder to find tracks, but the thrill of the hunt was ace. Bet every record store had people coming in on Mondays humming some track that had been getting played. This was in all the taste makers record boxes for weeks before the whites dropped. We've gained so much with the accessibility of music, but there are little romances that are lost

@@alansouthall8221 spot on! We used to go to a weekly sunday night event here in edinburgh then when the club closed at 3am we’d party until 9am when the record shop opened and go out of our heads to it searching for the tunes we’d heard!! Good times

Gotta love Bristol. A musical paradise consisting of Massive Attack, Idles, Roni Size, Portishead etc. Kosheen are another solid band from there.

A great memory... I knew Sian before she made it with kosheen. And we was walking home through a tunnel near a pub we drank in with her then boyfriend jake and she sang song for the siren. It echoed beautifully down the tunnel. And I sung with her. Great lil mem. Also there were drum n bass nights down the trinity where Sian started to sing with many others. Amazing nights.

I met her once at Glastonbury 2004 when she almost confiscated a Djembe I'd bought because it was raining and it was outside for no longer than 2 minutes. After a brief argument she left me alone. She was in the campsite next to us. In the evening we went across and joined them and it emerged she was this famous vocalist for Kosheen. Very down to earth lady. She gave my girlfriend a set of bangles. Luv and Peace.

I used to hate “Hide U” when i was very young in the 2000 and i never understood back then why it became #1 hit in my country but when i grew up i started to understand why this track is so special. What an amazing voice and artist! Thank you Twan for the interview.

Every dnb dj dropped that track to death before it even came out. I still don’t like that track because of how fast it was played out.kosheen has better tracks imo

Was 11 years old when I heard Hide U (twas the John Creamer & Stephane K remix cos that was the one in the charts) & honestly something about that track stuck in my memory all throughout these years...to this day I still play it in the car every so often The song (both the original & remix) introduced me to the world of electronic tunes (drum & bass, house, techno etc.) admittedly at a young age I guess 😅 Sian comes across as a truly decent person in fairness and am glad to hear she's still touring (Sian - if you're reading this, pls pls come to Ireland if you have any future gigs lined up, it would honestly make our day! 🙏) Great interview thank you! 👌

Oh yes. Hide U. I remember I heard it first time very well. It was the spring of 2001. At that time we had cool radio-show here called MTV Dancefloor chart. It was mainly commercial dance music. But most of it was pretty cool. Becuase it was a times when even commercial dance music was cool ha ha. And there was premiere of this track. I remember I thought that the vocalist has great voice and also I thought that this is DnB but it sounds really commercial. I never heard something like this before. i think this tune was the beginning of the era of the commercial DnB. All in all great classic tune & golden times. Loved this. I was well underway as dnb dj when kosheen came out. She is right dnb needed a voice of emotion during that period of time. Kosheen was a big hit on dnb dance floors. I still have their ep, hide u and slip and slide on vinyl. Teaming up with substance and decoder was a good choice. Solid and legendary production team.

The power of the remix. Surprised not more was mentioned about the John Creamer and Stephane K remix, seeing as that really propelled “Hide U” success. Speaking of which, I would love to hear an interview with Timo Maas and Azzido Da Bass, about “Dooms Night”. It would be verrrry interesting to hear both sides of that story!

Thanks for your comment! And we spoke a little bit about that remix, however, not sure what else I should have asked her about that remix, since Sian isn't the one who did remix the track right? ;-) FYI, I only do interviews about originals, not about remixes. Most artists rather talk about their own work instead of a remix they did for someone else. Plus the stories behind originals are for me more interesting compared to stories about remixes. I'm not sure how much I can ask about a remix and the story behind it, since it is usually a remix request that comes in from the record company and that's about it ;-) Doesn't mean I don't like those remixes, but for my channel I'm afraid it is just not interesting enough. And when I see how much time I'm spending on these vlogs, I rather keep the focus on originals like I'm doing now ;-) And.... last but not least..... I do not have a travel budget for these vlogs. As far as I know both Azzido Da Bass and Timo Maas live in / near Hamburg, which is almost a 5 hour drive from where I live. I simply don't have a budget for trips like that, sorry! I have Remixes on Cd there are 6 versions on it, one of them by Sister Bliss from Faithless, but best version is by John Creamer & Stephane K

Thanks for your comment! However, I'm not really looking for suggestions at the moment. When you check the pinned post on my Muzikxpress Facebook page you can see what I do and can't do regarding interviews. I have a loooong wish list with more than 50 people still, so plenty of ideas, but unfortunately a very small travel budget and also time is a bit of an issue, since this is "just" a hobby for me. Not really, their tracks "Catch", "Hungry" and "All In My Head" did pretty well in the charts too. Okay, not as huge as "Hide U", but definitely not a one hit wonder.
