For me personally, your name will always have a special place in my heart, nobody can pull of soul switching like Makoto Shinkai didit was so unique, including the ending. My only complain is that now i struggle watching basic, not-so-well thought out movies who have cringe moments.

will you watch the american western live action one. I heard it's being redone for the audience not able to watch animation since they think it's too childish or stuff.

@@nichescenes Im in a phase where im against American media ofcourse with certain exceptions. But i think ill now focus more on East Asian shows like anima and kdrama since i find them way more nuanced and refreshing.

@@rudeusgreyrat32 interesting. People I know switched to kdrama during the p_____ dem. I hope western shows and movies bring people back one day but I see an influx of people switching. Ehh maybe it’s fair. West can’t be on top forever. It’s also nice to try something new.

I also love his work but I just could not stop thinking that Suzume and Tenki no Ko were just Your Name in a different packaging. In tenki no Ko I thought it was good but Suzume just made that even clearer.

suzume was imo his most unique movie yet. i think the romance was forced but it's been revealed that it was never the plan anyway, the actual concept is super unique and interesting, and that scene at the end always gets me

To be fair, it's what you pay for with his films. Like watching a film by Wes Anderson and complaining that it's quirky. Or transformers bay and complaining that its over the top (well critics still complain about that.) A sappy romance is what your looking for with nice visuals. Sadly your name came first so people watch that and then his other films hoping for the same or better feelings and it gets less and less each time. Same reason why seeing superman fly in the first film isnt as impactful now that most superheroes fly and were not weirded out by it looking goofy and silly.

For me Garden of words is 2nd most visually appealing after Your Name. But I was disappointed with Suzume as a whole even though it was my first anime film watching on theatre.

Your Name wasn't just a movie, it was an EXPERIENCE. I personally feel that his "post-your-name" movies don't pack that much of a punch lately. I mean, they are good movies, but to this day, the only Shinkai movie which could make me feel things like never before, has just been "Your Name". His other movies don't hit the way Your Name did. But regardless to say, whatever his next movie is, I'll be damn there to watch it. The eye candy is just... man, I don't have any words for it.

I get what you mean: "Weathering With You" and Suzume" were enjoyable; but they felt too much like Shinkai was trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle that was "Your Name".

IMO Garden of Words is the most balanced movie of them all. Simple characters, gorgeous animation, great pacing and well written dialogue. His recent movie, Suzume, felt so lackluster and forcefully finished it.

My only problem is that the stories themselves seem to be your average seperated by X event reunited love. I genuinely wish he does a huge turn around with next feature film because I am sure if he does we are going to be graced with a f***ing masterpiece.
