Ferry Corsten is a Dutch DJ, producer and labelowner. This year exactly 30 years ago the very first release Ferry was involved with came out. Back in 1991 Ferry and 3 other friends, were responsible for the “Spirit Of Adventure” EP, which got released on Hithouse Records.
During the years Ferry did releases under names such as System F, Gouryella, Veracocha, Moonman, Pulp Victim, EON, Starparty, Vimana, New World Punx, Sons Of Aliens, Embrace and many, many others.
The very first time he released a track under his own name Ferry Corsten, was in the year 2002. I’m talking about the track “Punk”, which Ferry produced back in 2001 already. And since that’s exactly 20 years ago, I thought it would be a good reason to catch up with Ferry to ask him about the story behind this classic.
Furthermore you will hear a bit about “Rock Your Body Rock” as well (and the new remix by Mat Zo), plus of course I did ask Ferry about the new Gouryella single, Resonation Radio and more!

When I discovered Punk, it must have been '06 or '07, and it was very hard to find by then. Thankfully, it was released on an ASOT classics volume. And shortly after on his Flashback label. Thank you, Ferry, for a timeless and original track. 🙏

You had to be in a club with a banging sound system and heavy bass to fully appreciate a track like this. Just glad my clubbing days were during the peak of electronic music back in the early 2000s

I own the Kid Viscious remix on vinyl and it's my favorite mix of the track. I like how the melody had some extra notes added to it for better flow.

First time I heard Punk was in Perth West Aus watching Mario Piu DJ. It blew my mind when I heard it- hadnt heard anything like it before. Instant classic.

The very first time I saw Ferry live was back in 2005 at a small nightclub. I was in the front row and right in front of his DJ deck. As I have a loud, deep voice and screaming my excitement out my lungs, he definitely noticed me and when he dropped Punk, he was pointing and shouting at me “DIGITAL PUNK”😎😁 that fucking made my night. I’ll never forget that

Chris Moyles used to play this on his Radio 1 show in UK (2002) singing it as "who killed the duck, who killed the duck" as far as I can remember. Think it also got labeled as Funk Einsatz originally on white label. Jules on Radio 1 also played it early on before Positiva signed it. Wicked track, remember it was quite unique and the fuss it made at the time.

@@lewisblank9475 Indeed he did. That was 20 years ago and trance/electronic music was still evolving before it started to become stale after 2008, in my opinion at least. I was a daily listener of Moyles and the gang whilst still in school particularly around 2001 to 2003 when trance was in the top 40. The PPK remix a random listener sent in of Wills music was gripping lol I still would love to own it if that was possible it was amazing. Such a great show, miss them days!

One of my favorite parts in Punk is the rhythmic bassline when the lead plays together. Really compliments well and found it to be just as catchy as the lead.

Your show very unique with greatest artist and always wonder history background and the artist self but never could you find those things only hearing there songs ...it was like mystery ...you unsolved ...Doing most important wonderfull things info about the background ! is not just a interview ....You telling us most important history !

I remember well the first production by Ferry Corsten! I heard the track (Keep it rockin) on a pirate radio station in England in 1991. It took my almost two decades to discover the track was produced by the man himself. Top producer!

This is when he changed from his trademark euphoric sound to a more laid back electro trance. I've got to admit that I really hated it then, but now that I've reached the 4 in the calendar it's grown on me and I understand that change in his sound. He was bored and needed some new motivations.

"Rock you Body Rock" Was a class track. I think it also features in EA Sports FIFA Football game. Could've swore Ferry met Thierry Henry back then for the FIFA game's rights to "Gouryella" 😉🔥

Grappig dat mensen deze breakbeat electro track van Ferry vreemd vond omdat hij bekend stond om de trance. maar ik had ooit een cd die was uitgebracht door een label waar hij bij zat onder de naam Ferr en daar stonden juist allemaal electro/techno en breakbeat tracks op die hij voordat hij bekend werd had gemaakt, dus deze sound zat altijd al in hem! Nice interview as usual. Ferry is a creative genius and a versatile producer. Punk and Rock Your Body Rock are two of his unique tunes. Although, Punk is not one of my favorites from Ferry, he did a good job with it. I like Rock Your Body Rock better between the two.

I remember hearing this for the first time in Club Glow, Washington DC in like late 2001... I remember instantly loving it, in fact it made me love the whole prog house sounding stuff, the darker stuff, more. I had suspected it was Ferry but just for the main synths but because of his Ransom - My Dance Remix, it reminded me of that also. It took everyone a really long time to 'ID' this instant classic. It was an 'ID' track for a good few months lol.

Hey Twan, to answer your question, I love the original version of “Punk.” And if I had to mention my favorite part of this interview, it’d be when you and Ferry talked about “Rock your body rock.” I love everything about that track, especially the vocals, since they were done by him. I also loved the funny story he shared about the lyrics, I couldn’t help but laugh and smile when I heard it. ☺️ 🤣 I think it’d be cool to hear more about that track, such as how he came up with the lyrics and what gave him the idea to get it out there for everyone.

As a big fan of Ferry’s since before I knew his real name, (just his aliases at the time) I really enjoyed this interview Twan! I loved hearing how his track Punk came together. Makes me want to pull out my old keyboard with sequencer I bought in 1993. And I loved how you tied it in with the Rock your body rock and what new things are on the horizon for Ferry!! Keep up the great work!

This track is fckn banging and is a timeless track, these are the real gems of trance music imo. That over the top opera choir stuff hasn’t aged well, this on the other hand you can stick on at a party nowadays and there is no option than to go fckn nuts.

We still do. We have a video from January 2020 when I went to a show for my birthday and the opener played Punk, and me, my dad, and another guy we didn't know were all in one side of the room loudly singing that part

Great interview,i have that silver Tsunami 12" and i remember when the Funk Einstanz promos were out - it was a big change in direction of style but it was so well done by Ferry,and what other producers have ever been capable of going to different styles like him over the years - not many at all!

I'm more of a classic trance guy when it comes to electronic music and I'm more into tracks that are driven by emotions, so this electro-heavy hands-up style track of Ferry didn't do much for me, but I always like to learn about the creative process behind his music, so I'll definitely watch this one as well. I cried inside when I heard Punk because I knew it was the end of Trance and clubbing as I’d known it. That’s not knocking Ferry. It just marked the end of an era.

One of my all time favorite classics. I used to party at Club Glow in Washington D.C. back in the day. There is a Punk music video filmed at Club Glow. I was not there for that video but I was there when Ferry played the last night at that location before they moved to a new venue.

I always focus on big hits / classics for my interviews since these vlogs take a lot of time. When I do interviews about lesser known tracks I can really see this in the amount of views, so “Needle Juice” isn’t really one that’s on my wish list. Just being honest 🙂

I remeber hearing punk for the 1st time at Godskitchen (Birmingham England) it was dropped in the middle of a big room trance set and it just blew me away I turned to my brother and said...whoa, what the f***k man, what a dirty choon. so cool to see all the avid hardcore trance fans embrace this track. epic times

Great percussion and build up on that mix too (the original 2002 mix not the rework CG did 10 years later just to be clear), and is the best trancey version if you ask me. Arty mix and MarLo mix released with the CG rework were not too bad either but the originals are by far the most listenable.

I’m very picky when it comes to interviews since these take a lot of time etc. So I always aim for interviews about classics / big (chart) hits. If I can do another interview with Ferry in the future, I have something in mind already 😉

Problem with Ferry is even though it seems you have easy access to him thanks to your past work with him for the last two decades there are simply too many works to cover. His 'Indigo' for instance is one of his best at the time when he was churning out banger after banger. What's next, 'It's Time' maybe? The Flashover mix was another stunner, the original more breaks style like 'Punk' but still a good hit, only made it to 51 on UK chart though so might not hit your requirement for an interview :/ but you could cover a lot with that track, with the vocals and his own Flashover mix etc. Wasn't expecting this Punk interview to hit so a nice surprise for me!

No offence to Ferry but as long as it's something from his older catalogue rather than something more recent I wouldn't have as much interest in personally but would still probably watch anyway. I did rather like Radio Crash and Anahera but as with most current music, trance included I just feel nothing, the classics and the less well known tunes still do it for me. Thanks for the reply! :D
