Hey, Phil Salvador here! 100% the guy I emailed with was one of the RTmark people. Some folks looked into the version of the game I found and it is definitely a bug caused by slipshod programming, and then the RTmark guys took credit because that was exactly the kind of thing they wanted to do intentionally. TY for sharing the story!

@@princessCashel I'm probably getting details wrong, but my understanding is: it loads your text into memory, and when you click Read a second time, it starts the process of checking your text for bad words by loading the swear filter into memory *in the same place*. Since it's taking a while to load everything, it just keeps reading from memory and goes right into the swear words.

Just reminded me of that stop motion/live action film Small Soldiers where Major Chip Hazard reverse-engineered a fallen soldiers computer chip to add Barbie dolls to his army, but they still spoke like Barbie while trying to kill people

I don't understand "un-ironically" in this situation. The way I read it, to un-ironically want a Barbie with a gi joe voicebox means that you want the Barbie so that you can play with it like any other doll. Did you make sure you used the correct wording in your statement? Or do you actually want to play with Barbie dolls like a little girl? Either one is fine with me, as long as you understand what you're saying. Because there is no reason to un-ironically want a Barbie doll except to have tea parties and go to the plastic mall and dry hump a Ken doll at the drive in sandbox \ movie theater. Or please explain what you meant to say instead of "un-ironically". Unless you really do want to have tea parties for fun like a little girl. More power to you, if that's the case. I won't shame you, since I'm a 42 year old printing out stickers of my cat on a $9 thermal printer that looks like a bears head.

Ah this takes me back. As a kid I had a ZX Spectrum+ 128k , picked up a Currah Speech Interface from a car boot sale. That thing verbally abused my sister for months until my mother heard it and confiscated it.

the edutainment thing I feel like I *have* heard from around the internet but I forget from where its the 'word dictionary' that was my favorite part, haha... of course the sim copter thing I had heard of before but didn't realize there was some connection there. and the voice box thing I'm pretty sure showed up as a bit on the simpsons, I didn't know that was based on a real event!

'Math'?! Now that is offensive to any real Brit :-) As far as the game is concerned, I suspect that it would have instigated quite a giggle and fun conversations between parents at the school gates, before being largely forgotten because it would not have caused worldwide panic, just a storm in a teacup. Oh how society has devolved in some ways. Kids only have to go onto KZfaq to look for information on their favourite video games or tech and they can hear uncontrolled swearing on many a channel, with zero restriction.

I remember the BLO flap, the media behaved like it was this massive thing when I think only seven or so dolls were swapped. It was specifically over Teen Talk Barbie stating "Math Class was tough today." That's why you see her with the other "rejected" Barbies in the film later on at Weird Barbie's house because the voicebox swap stories opened up conversations about real concerns whether the dolls reinforced dissuading girls from going into STEM subjects.

The first time I found swearing in a computer game (apart from something like Larry, which I don't think had actual swearing) was in Wing Commander 2 (on MS-Dos). It came with "Special Operation 1" and "Special Operation 2". I think it was in the second, if you started attacking on of the other human one of them would say (with all the glory of Sound Blaster 16), "Holy Shit!!! You're the traitor".
