Today I turned 80. My children gave me a party. In my remarks, I said that I sing this song every night before I go to sleep. At this age, the stanza "Hold Thou Thy cross Before my closing eyes" gives me both hope and c This heavenly song should give hope and comfort to persons of all ages.

Hope and pray you are doing well. Thanks for sharing your comment here . This song was chosen by my beloved husband in 2001 in June, before his passing to be sung at his funeral. He was 57. I never knew this song before it was sung because I had never heard of it due to a different language and heritage. Today, I wanted to know the story behind this song. I'm glad I have found it . Blessing to you. December 22, 2023. Merry Christmas.

The Lord picked fishermen along the sea of Galilee, and a poet in the fishing town of Brixham.

My heart soars hearing this and contemplating the lyrics. What a testimony to our transcendent, sovereign Lord! Oh how I long for the Great Hymns of the Faith to ring out from all corners of the world, in every tongue and nation! Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

What a lovely tribute to a wonderful hymn! Thank you for posting. The blessings of the Lord are many if only we open our hearts to seeking the power of His word through the Gospels. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God. He was with God in the beginning. (John 1:1)

So touching. I always cry when listening to this song. I was taught to sing this song when I was four and the lyric has built my love to our lord Jesus Christ.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile, And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile, Thou hast not left me oft as I left Thee. On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

There was an episode of "Arena" about Abide With Me - called something like "the storry of an English hymn". I've been looking for it, off and on, for a very long time; it's not in the collected lists of editions of Arena that enthusiasts have compiled. If anyone has it, please post it ...

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMiiepeEltyweX0.html chimes play melody with a wrong note - 4th at end of 2nd line should be raised. Many bagpipe performances have the same fault, or another wrong note, 6th, played instead.
