The Story of Blackletter- Animation

"I cannot read this old script!" Well, truly this script is old but be honest -- have you ever tried to read a text set in blackletter? This project explains the story of blackletter -- it's origin, development and why we certainly stopped using blackletter as an everyday typeface. You will see, blackletter is a beautiful part of typography and history. An artwork in itself with high practicality.

The story of blackletter is one of my final major project in graphic arts at Bucks New University 2012. PLEASE NOTE: This is a student project and I used commercial music.

What an excellent overview. As a calligrapher in the monastic traditions as a child i was taught that the battle over the letters was based on protestant vs. Catholic…..the catholics saying, of course, that the blackletter was dark and of the devil, and therefore moved away into the ‘light’ and hence lighter Italic hands developed. I am happy now to use all of the hands, each lovely in their own way.

I myself like to write blackletter much more than modern manuscript; breaking things up into short straight lines makes writing much easier than all those articulated circles.

Romania has it's own version of this but its based on the old church slavanic stylized fonts of the middle ages

Great video, but runes are not an older cousin of the Latin Alphabet. They descend from the Old Italic Script which is the earliest version of the Latin Alphabet we know. The Old Italic Script was created initially by the Etruscans who copied Western Variants of the Greek Alphabet used at the time. The Italic speaking groups of the Italian peninsula like the Oscan, Umbrans and Romans then borrowing their writing and it eventually evolved further into Square Capitals, but still the appearance of Northern European runes is hundreds of years after Latin was being written in this script. Also, Antiqua is pronounced "Anti-kwa" and it is the word for "old" or "ancient"(due to the humanist belief that the Carolingian minuscule/uncial script they saw was actually Roman handwriting).

Swedish used Fraktur until the 1870s, and Norwegian and Danish until the early 20th century.

I don't know that blackletter is more convenient for Romance languages like french... we don't have these ligatures and need for stuff like that. Then again... who says every language needs to use the same typography all the time....
