Well it's a German program and they are even more lazier than the English if it comes to languages. I've seen this on German Television a few years ago. With out the English bits. Guessing you're British, why do you call him by his french name and not Charles the main. In Dutch he's called Karel de grote in German it would be Karl dem große.

French people are mostly Celts that were conquered by the Romans, and subsequently took up large parts of Roman culture, including the Latin language (which gradually evolved into French). Franks were a Germanic tribe, their modern descendents are the Dutch, Flemish and Western Germans.

It was Holy, Roman and an Empire at one point and I'm sad you even mention this quote by Voltaire from the late stages of it's existing. It existed nearly 1000 years, only few empires could beat this. That's one of the dumbest quotes. The HRE held Rome at the beginning (that's why the name Roman) and they saw themselves as the successor of the Romans, the king/ emporer got crowned by the pope and was the defender of christianity (that's why Holy, but also only really in the beginning stages) and it was definitly and empire (even up till it's end, but you could say the kings and dukes just did their own stuff. Yes sometimes they followed the orders of the emporer, but sometimes they didn't, especially after the reformation and the thirty years war, the power of the emporer was minimal (atleast as an emporer, the emporer had full authority about the place he ruled as king or duke)). But all emporers had power struggle, just look at Great Britain or the Mongols.

I think these videos are made mostly for education oriented entertainment of which most entertainment is irreverent and full of reenactments Most videos on KZfaq are 15 minutes long, why? because people hav such short attention spans & get bored easily. You could watch 4 padded videos for entertainment's sake in the same time you watch this one hoping to glean some form of relevent information or education. KZfaq standards are pretty lowbrow, but its free to watch.
