Davis Marble Works was a short-lived glass toy marbles company from Pennsboro, West Virginia from 1947-1948. They purchased their machine from Corning Glass in 1946, the machine was originally owned by Alley Agate .
In this video we film with Ron Shepherd, David Tamulevich, Sammy Hogue and Michael Johnson to discuss the history of the factory, the May 2002 dig of the property grounds, and detailed identifications of their marbles.
There are examples from six different Davis collections In this upload . The Davis Marble Works marbles are widely considered among the rarest of the West Virginia swirl marbles today. Many of there marbles are Indistinguishable from neighboring companies of that era : Cairo Novelty, Jackson Marbles, Play-Rite Marbles and Heaton Agates.
Since the company was only in operation for approximately one year, their marbles are extremely rare and difficult to find. Most of their marbles were shipped to Puerto Rico, which would be the most likely place to find them today. Davis marble specimens have been known to occasionally show up in random lots at estate sales, flea markets and marble shows In the United States.
For detailed information and a terrific marbles reading resource, refer to the Book : “American Machine-Made Marbles” (2006 Six / Metzler / Johnson). This video Is dedicated to the company’s co-owner Wilson Davis (1927-2017)

Great documentation of these little known very rare Davis marbles by Stephen and WV marble guru Ron. The story of Davis marbles and the ultimate dig at the factory site as told by Ron on the collectors site All About Marbles.com actually brought tears to my eyes. I am the most fortunate recipient of 5 different Davis marbles gifted to me by Ron from the dig. While not the flashiest marbles in my collection they are top A-List examples for obvious reasons. Hens teeth! Thank you Stephen for enlightening marble collectors with another stupendous marble video.

Absolutely Real Time ! He explained in much more detail off-camera. I’m so glad Wilson finally agreed , for all our sakes. Otherwise we wouldn’t know what a Davis looks like. It was a small miracle!

I just viewed that box of Davis in person last weekend while digging some Davis up at Cairo. Found around 15 identifiable Davis so far out of the Cairo dig. Lots of the yellow lightnings that I dug are fractured. Only dug two yellow lightnings and that aren’t fractured. All but one fluoresced orange, so perhaps Cairo also made some clear based yellow marbles but there appears to be no Cairo cullet with that color…
@stephenbahrmarbles
@stephenbahrmarbles Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the update insert! I grabbed about two buckets of cullet from Cairo grounds, I’ll start looking though them. As far as how much Davis and Cairo bought and sold with each other, I’m not 100% sure, no one knows exactly. I would think the more you dig a certain type from the grounds = the more likely it was produced there. The mystery continues…

I don't know if you knew an Ed Heinbaugh or not but he was my uncle. I grew up mowing grass and doing chores for marbles. I remember my very first florescent marble he gave me. I have great memories of a first class marble collection and remember his office with cases and cases of high end marbles. I've just started watching your videos but have to say they bring back alot of memories. I'm surprised I still remember names and patterns. Thanks for the videos.
