1:16:37 For the 2018 Eurovision hosted in Portugal, the whole theme was the sea and the "All aboard" slogan is meant to be for a boat or ship (and not a train). I'm pretty sure the logo depicts a sea shell

Mandatory funfacts about Belgrade's design that will make you appreciate it more: The logo is two colors splashing into each other and converging. The year's slogan was "Confluence of sound". Belgrade, the host city, is located on the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, two big European rivers. So the logo represents both different musical genres colliding (as they do in Eurovision) AND the literal place where it's happening - Belgrade. Also, 2008's stage is vaguely, but clearly, a geographical map of Belgrade when seen from above. The middle of the stage (where they put the ice rink for Dima) is shaped like Great War Island, which is where the Sava's confluence into the Danube is located. The stage is literally the confluence of sound in every way

The thing about 2024 is that it wasn't really a single logo, it was more just a design theme for the entire contest. Unlike previous years, the actual logo was basically never used for branding with the designers instead using the theme of the "Eurovision lights" to create tons of different logos.

Exactly this. I thought it was pretty cool and dynamic, (just like the background music). Only problem was that they couldn't really pull a static logo out of it.

Rotterdam 2020's concept was every line represented a year and the colors equated to the countries' flags in their first year of appearance; Rotterdam 2021's concept was every line being one of the participating countries and the size/placement was their distance relative to Rotterdam

That’s right! In addition, the 2020 concept was deeply inspired by the 1976 and 1980 logos, to reflect that they are part of a shared story of the Netherlands hosting the Eurovision Song Contest.

Malmo 2013's butterfly is ICONIC. 2013 was the first Eurovision I saw in full and I've been hooked ever since, thanks to that I will forever associate Eurovison with the butterfly. Edit: Stockholm 2016's orb was meant to look like a dandelion, those puffy flowers where the wind blows it's seeds across the place. I remember them using dandelions a lot in the imagery of the intro to the semis and final. Funnily enough they did a similar thing with the 2013 butterfly, making it a little character and showing its journey across Europe as a caterpillar for the start of the grand final. Lisbon 2018's logo looks to me like a shell with petals? in the background Always saw the all aboard slogan as a reference to getting on boats but i guess trains make sense too. Obviusly my most favourite is 2013's butterfly, however a few other favourites of mine were the 63' logo which i'd never pick as a logo from the 60s, Dublin 95' is really cool with the bold lines and blue-yellow colour scheme. I love the style of Belgrade 2008 with the contrasting paint splashes of red and blue, and Stockholm 2000, even though I know it's not very good and kinda weird It's a guilty pleasure logo for me I guess.

My guess, is that the 1958 shapes are absolutely meant to represent people singing. It is something that is not the easiest thing to recognize at the first glance, but I think it’s a pretty fun and creative approach for portraying the theme of the show, and it also pushes you to make an effort while examining the thing.

There’s a point where the “base” logo becomes the logo itself, and the “logo” is more a whole visual concept for the year. I think seeing these designs “in action” as intended would provide really interesting context.

I remember reading at the time that the 2020/21 logos wanted to be similar bc they were very similar years in terms of production, but the different shapes are because the meanings are different. 2020 was the 65th anniversary so they wanted to showcase all the participants in the order of their debut in the contest. The gaps are for years no one debuted, so you get huge chunks like the early years and then the 2000s when Eastern Europe joined. 2021 was meant to represent where each participating country is geographically from Rotterdam, to show how even in the virtual Covid era we’re all connected. So like the gigantic blue bar in the upper left is Iceland, you can easily see Ireland and Eastern Europe on the right, etc. Knowing that made me like the 2021 logo a lot more. I think aesthetically I still prefer 2020 but the meaning is really lovely 😁

Dearest Adam. The "Eurovision" is a inter-PSB television network that connected points around Europe to allow for the live (and recorded) transmission of TV shows between "state" broadcasters. The UK end was based in the BT Tower's TV control room for many years (and had fun slips with "Eurovision" written on them to do the bookings). The song contest was an annual attempt to use this network for a live show. It had to be able to convert the various analogue TV standards (PAL-M, SECAM etc) to allow this to happen. Also I think you'll find that Grand Prix in French can refer to a race such as those with motor-cars and horses.

I think last years yellow/blue/pink is the best of them all. I agree this will probably age into iconic! This years Northern light coloured sound waves leaves quite a lot to be desired as a logo, they really worked well as on screen graphics though; The title cards, intros, outroes, even the framing of the postcards was done in the most delicate way. Made the whole production beautifully seamless in a way I have never before noticed in Eurovision!

The term Adam is looking for to name the retro fonts is "Art Déco", IMO. The line art in the Switzerland 1989 is the Matterhorn and the trophy was also a Matterhorn in crystal. The 2001 "circles" seem to suggest a V and are clearly inspired by the Lorenz butterfly.

The 1966 part of the logo represents TV buttons, 1974 bird is the symbol of freedom and song, duuh! I'm glad you liked Serbian logo. The motto that year (2008) was "The confluence of sound" and the splash represents two rivers Danube and Sava. Belgrade lays on their confluence. Also, I think we were the first to focus our postcards on something other than promoting our country.

2020 is meant to display the flags by year of debut in the contest, so you have the founding countries and the top and then Australia at the end as the last inclusion. 2021 however is displays each flag predominant colors in the form of stripes reaching for the center, mirroring the distance and spatial distribution from each capital city to Rotterdam

Thank you for this pretty long video! I want to clarify some details I've figured out: While 2004 rolled out the first version of the ESC logo we know today, the actual logo was not that. Turkey had a visual theme and slogan for the event, you should've check that instead. Theme of 2005 looks better with all the effects (in posters and the live show), the vector version doesn't give justice. Theme of 2006 actually have more versions, you should check these!

Hi Adam. I was heading to your channel just to ask this as an offtopic, but seeing your last video -brilliant as usual- maybe it's not that unrelated. Care to share the measurements of that fab poster behind you? I attended ESC las year and was looking to get some late memorabilia, but the official poster on sale at the official shop -in yellow- doesn't say much about measurements. I take it's larger than A3? Did you get them in person at the merch shops back there?

I like and love the idea of having a song championship between several countries, in which the best song would win. Here in Latin America we had the OTI Song Festival until 2000, when unfortunately it was canceled due to lack of interest from several broadcasters across the region, I wanted it to come back but I see that no one wants to interrupt the reality show or the soap opera to show this. I believe that the various Eastern European countries that hosted the song festival wanted to give the image of being very worthy of the competition, as they were mostly former satellite republics (and in the case of Estonia, Russia and Azerbaijan) of the Soviet Union, and who have overcome the red past with a new value.

the 1987 Logo is the first one that was computer 3d. this doesn't show on the printed one you show, but it was a "thing" back then. it is indeed very dated yet in reflection it has a windows 95 look when you see in on screen. If I recall correctly, and I'm scratching my memory here, it started as a "joining of the two broadcasters (BRT and RTBF back in the day) for organising together, but that went out the door once the location was chosen, and I think the colors were changed to be neutral to Belgium. Also I think that in the 1980's these three colors were the official Eurovision colors now, you can see them come back in the years to follow. However it is meant to introduce a "new space age" with the two balls representing planets and the beam connecting them the signal between the planets. Once we colonised the Moon and Mars it will make sense for sure. They also made straws from in in the first merchandising of a Eurovision logo beyond clothing and other paraphernalia where you drank the official Eurovision cocktail, in Eurovision colors of the logo, through a straw that went through 2 Styrofoam or hollow plastic balls that were covered in plastic or paint. it was very "health and safety out the door days" In the end it was to showcase the technological advancements of Belgium back in the day with the irony that the technology and advancements were from Flanders, which RTBF started to loath, but they kept what was useful to them at all cost, meaning that this was the most expensive song contest to date, even renting the lasers from a discotheque who received four times the price in rental than what they paid for it to buy. I worked for the florist who made the bouquets a few years later, he was the winner of the international flowers competition and he charged so much for this that he was able to rebuilt the front and interior of his shop and his logo without borrowing. The mentality of the RTBF and the Walloon community still hasn't changed much and if Belgium won today it would be very political though to avoid this the non winning region might take a step aside for the winning broadcaster to represent themselves in trying to win again. Also, have you noticed that every 10 years or so a logo just stands out, but not always in a good way? 1958, 1963, 1974, 1987, 1996, 2000, 2010, 2018, and lord knows what Switzerland will come up with next

I'm not saying thats what's happened as i dont know how kuch research you actually did, but several times you admit that you dont know what things are in the logos when, especially for the 2010s onwards, theres PLENTY of sources documenting the logo design process and meaning.

Yes, I thought the same thing. 2019 was not star from the European Union for example - it was the star from their flag. 2020 showed indeed the flags for the countries participating but there was a meaning behind it. The circle represented the years for the counties in which they joined. 2021 shows the countries again but now they are coming together to "open up" in Rotterdam. The waves around the circle of 2022 were the movement of the water as they played music during the creation. 2023 showed Ukraine's flag but the pink wasn't just for "contrast". It was the colors of the hat of the lead singer of Kalush and lastly - 2024 - yes. the logo was simple but literally as they presented the logo, SVT said that the color bars are referring to the northern lights.

I don't know if they've already mentioned it but Denmark 2001 those scribbles form a heart (the famous Eurovision heart). Anyway, it would be good if you saw the graphic design in general to comment on the logos... in Sweden 2016 the logo was misplaced in Taraxacum (dandelion) and in Portugal 2018 it was a conch (marine design). In 2021 in the Netherlands, the logo has a peculiarity and that is that the flags were longer than others, representing the "distance" between the Netherlands and other participating capitals/countries. Finally, Sweden 2024, the blurred color design is similar to the northern lights.

I think you have forgotten to name Lys Assia as the first winner 1956 in Lugane and the 1983 Logo in Munich has of course the "bavarian blue" as the right colour.

It's funny that you talk about referencing the EU in the logos, before the EU's existence... XD ...or did the EU take inspiration from those logos? 11:23 - I have a friend who uses this font in their thumbnails... XD

I think that the signage for the first contest is intentionally using an art nuveau font, since it is often associated with opera buildings.

1990 it respresents lips but also the letter e. 2001 it's a heart, and the lines connect the capitals of Europe. Can't remember if it's all of them or just the ones in the contest that year

i don’t want to come across as rude but why are you even analyzing these “logos” when you didn’t even look up on the matter a bit further? like you missed most of the references. why putting that little effort to such an impactful topic? btw the majority of the visual identities of the 10s and 20s are meant to be part of graphic universes, “analyzing” the logos on their own is quite lazy and confusing as the logos won’t work by themselves. i wish you dug a little bit deeper into the topic and looked at the bigger picture, not just the very surface of it.

Sorry but... you missed completely the point of most logos. From a video titled ''The Story Of Every Eurovision Logo... EVER'' I would expect some level of research behind it but nah, just a dude NOT explaining the story of the eurovision logos and NOT knowing the symbolism of the logos themselves, even of those that are striking clear. Not only that, he is ranting about the logos he fails to understand. That was irritating to watch. Thankfully, there a lot of comments explaining to you the actual backstory of the logos, something that was your job in a video titled like that.

You know, you call a bunch of the early logos "dated" but that's simply accurate - they've included the year into their design... 😜 39:29 - not only did they sneak in an 86, they made the six red... Norway on a map looks a little bit like a 6. 50:04

‘In-motion’ logos are my least favourite thing - a good logo should work in ANY form. 2022 and 2024 just feel lazy and generic to me, especially when you are reusing the slogan like in 2024. A good logo can work ‘in motion’ and ‘static’, with 2023 being the perfect example.
