In this week's video, I dive into the story of HUM, an alternative rock/metal band formed in 1989. Largely influential, HUM released iconic records including 1995's "You'd Prefer An Astronaut" and 1998's "Downward is Heavenward". The band is perhaps best known for their 1995 hit, "Stars." Now back in 2020 with Inlet, HUM is going stronger than ever. Watch to gain some insight on the band behind singles such as "Stars," "The Pod," and "Comin' Home."

My buddy was dating Matt's cousin and she found out I was a huge fan. She went to a family reunion and I told her to tell Matt hi and his music is great. When she came back she gave me an autographed LP of YPAA that Matt was gracious enough to give a complete stranger. Love Hum.

Inlet is fucking brilliantly heavy and melodic. Always loved the heavy punch of stars but never really listened to anything else from Hum. Then I saw inlet while searching for some new music and can’t put it down. A lot of people comment the the songs are too long, but they’re so good I never really notice. It is SO incredibly rare for a band to write something so amazing so long into they’re career. One of my favorite albums period.

I totally agree with your whole statement. I accidentally found it 2 days after it was released here on YT(for once, thank you YT algo!). Almost 2 years since it was released, it's still my favorite Hum record and has become one of my all time favorite records. I first heard "Stars" on my car stereo in '95, and I swear to God, I pulled into a record shop parking lot while the song was still playing, went inside and got the ONLY copy of "YPAA", pulled out into traffic 5 mins later and blasted that album for months, while turning my friends on to it who are also still big fans. I just recently finished a binge on "Inlet" that lasted 3 weeks. Those long songs are incredible compositions with surprising and unbelievable transitions and just massive riffs, and then there are the lyrics..... just a beautifully heavy, spacey, THICK record. Great album, all the way through. As a drummer since childhood, Bryan St. Pere's playing heavily influenced my style and I am still sad that I'll never see him rock these songs in person. R.I.P. BSP, your heavy-handed style and grooves are missed, brother.

So many different aspects to it that are wonderful... dynamics... arpeggios... heavy guitars... and lighter guitars (they weren't really clean, but not overloaded with distortion... not sure what to call it).. and the drum parts were amazing... I grew up with HUM. "You'd prefer an astronaut" and "Downwards is heavenwards" are both some of the most important albums of my life but I have to disagree about "Inlet". "Inlet" is Hum's Magnum Opus. It's the bands best release to date and also one of the best albums of the decade. Especially the long songs are masterpieces. I listened to it so many times and it never gets boring. I am obsessed with this album.

I started getting in to alternative rock around the mid-'90s and Stars was one of my favorite tracks early on. Dating myself completely, I had a hard time remembering band names, so I walked in to a record store and asked the clerk for the album with "that Stars song". He directed me to a giant book like a huge phone book and we manually looked up who did songs named "Stars" and HUM was the first thing that popped in to my brain as we went over the list. We went over to the "H" section and looked through the rack and he said "Oh, sorry I don't have the one with Stars, but I have their new release they just put out" - Downward is Heavenward. Looking through the tracklist I recognized a couple songs (Comin' Home and Green to Me were getting a decent amount of airplay at the time) so I went ahead and bought it. And of course I fell in love immediately. It wasn't long before I tracked down YPAA and even E2K (I bought it off of Amazon back when they only sold books and music). I connected with the social scene and even found other similar bands I fell in love with over the years. My only regret is not being able to see them live while Bryan was playing with them. My friend (who I also got in to HUM) and I intended to go to the 01-01-01 'final' show but being young and having no money made that impossible. We finally got to see them when they were touring with Mineral while Jason Gerken was drumming. It was amazing to see them but it wasn't the same. They're still my favorite band. I'm glad with what we got since we're probably not getting any more now that Bryan is gone (RIP). It would be nice to get a few of the deep cuts like Inklings and Invisible Sun (a Police cover which from my understanding was recorded and finished for the X-Files Movie soundtrack before being bumped at the last minute by Sting's crappy reggae version). Matt's side project Centaur is also incredible and has a lot of common threads with Inlet. There may be more Centaur on the horizon now that HUM is completely finished. On the other side, Tim Lash has a side project called Glifted which is an acquired taste but again, carries a lot of DNA into Inlet as well. And of course, Jeff Dimpsey is probably better well known as bassist for National Skyline which also had moderate commercial success.

@Chet Senior Fuck that you ever seen Big Black live? That shit was the most abrasive shit to ever hear my ears and im.telling you it's crazy loud. Almost made my ears bleed. In fact it was so loud I had a patch of balled up earwax in my ear and it penetrated it, and turned that ball into liquid ear wax just flowing right out of my ear folks. BIG BLACK CHANGED MY LIFE!. MY right ear was almost legally deaf. That performance changed it all. The part that did it was the part in kerosene where it built up and did that crashing of guitars? My doctor explained the frequency pushed my ear drum out a little and the wax gushed out.

They took the layered sonic sound to the furthest expanse. I had a buddy named Tristan Crane who played Stars on his guitar and I hadn't heard the song before. It sounded so freaking awesome and spacey. Specifically the break in Stars. Good dude, good band.

after picking up Inlet on vinyl, i fell in love with Hum. I managed to pick up a pressing of Downward is Heavenward as well.
