Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Jake "The Snake" Roberts in WCW
Jake "The Snake" Roberts was one of the WWE's most recognizable superstars during the late 80s and early 90s. While he didn't capture any gold during his WWF tenure, Jake was still a big star in the World Wrestling Federation while the company beneifited from a wrestling boom period. Jake's feuds with Rick Rude, Andre The Giant, Ted Dibiase and Macho Man Randy Savage were the stuff of legend.
Jake Roberts has been credited as having one of the greatest minds in wrestling. He was creative, he could tell stories, and his mic work was phenomenal. Jake wanted to become a writer within the WWF, and when a spot on the creative team became available, he approached WWF owner Vince McMahon to see if he could get the job. When Vince refused, Jake decided to hold up the company for his release, and he worked his final WWF match (of this era) at WrestleMania 8. Jake would find his way to WCW where he immediately began feuding with Sting. Everyone remembers "Spin The Wheel, Make The Deal" at Halloween Havoc 1992, but what else happened during this time period? Why did Jake suddenly get up and leave WCW also?
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at Jake Roberts in WCW. Topics covered include:
01:56 - Jake Roberts holds up Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 8
07:16 - The WCW debut of Jake "The Snake" Roberts
08:37 - Jake Roberts in the Clash of the Champions 20 main event
09:54 - The "Spin The Wheel, Make The Deal" mini movie
11:37 - Sting vs Jake Roberts at Halloween Havoc 1992
- Much More!

I'm not a wrestler, I'm nobody and I've never even met the man but DDP saved me... well, helped me save myself is how I think he'd see it. Long story short his videos and speeches and talks helped me claw my way back from rock-bottom. I hope I never actually meet DDP in person because I'd just be a blubbering mess thanking him unintelligibly.

I once did it accidentally to my friend. We were kinda roughhousing in his family's basement, somehow wrestling came up, and I was "demonstrating" how they did certain moves. Had him in the headlock, then I said: then they fall like THIS and I sort of halfheartedly initiated falling downwards, expecting my friend to stay up right. That dumbass didn't, let me drag him down headfirst into these gym mats. I cannot overemphasize how easily he could have avoided falling like that. He was fine, but for a second there, it was scary

Jake's worked well, because he was taller than 90% of his opponents and he delivered it with speed. In the Kayfabe era, it literally looked like he was using all of his body weight to drive an opponent's head right through the ring. And if that were real, you definitely wouldn't be getting up from it. None of the DDTs delivered today look at all believable.

What Jake Robert's said about Sting "getting lazy" and "those are the kind of people that hurt wrestling the most" is extremely hypocritical looking back on the stuff he pulled in his career. DDT is pretty dangerous. I almost knocked out a couple of buddies but they got me back with an Macho elbow from from the backyard deck and a pile driver that almost broke my neck. We then realized that whoever was using a finishing move had to protect the guy getting finished. 10 yr olds realizing that match outcomes we predetermined but the athletics and the moves were real if you wanted to hurt someone.

The thing about Vince McMahon not giving Jake Roberts the writer's position, is that he had planned to re-hire Pat Patterson -- once the ring boy scandal blew over. 1992 presented a 3-pronged "sh*t storm" for Vince. The feds were after him for distributing steroids, Patterson was accused of raping ring boys, and the company was in a ratings slump. 1992 was definitely the "wrong year" for Jake to leave the WWE. The company needed solid in-ring talent like Jake, to remain steady. Jake impulsively left the company, only to get "screwed over" in other promotions. This only worsened his substance abuse problems.

I definitely believe WCW was gonna pay him that much. Ya gotta remember, Jake was only upper midcard because the wouldn't let him go any higher. When they teased an angle with him and Hulk, the crowd responded to Jake, not Hogan. There's no doubt Jake could've carried the main event as World Champion. People believed everything he did in the ring and his promos were beyond great. Jake was 3 steps ahead of everybody when it came to psychology. He's one of the 10 goats as far as I'm concerned.

So what? Jake held the championship of ring psychology and dark charisma and up to this day he hasn’t been dethroned

I think it's pretty telling that on the Sting Unmasked! vhs from WCW/nWo Superstars Series when they talk about Sting's feud with Jake the Snake Roberts they don't even mention the wheel or the coal miner glove. They just cut right to the "Snake bitten jake the snake!" bit lol

I always wondered why Roberts’ time in WCW was so short. Thanks for shedding light on this subject. I’m surprised he blamed the lousy Halloween Havoc match on Sting. The easy, diplomatic thing would be to blame it on a match type that had fallen out of favor decades ago. I find it a little hard to believe all match types were possible. Did they really bring all that equipment to Philadelphia? Did they sit down and plot out a game plan and a finish for every one?

I loved Jake's time in WCW! Mini-Movie and Coal Miner's Glove Match aside, I loved him teaming with Cactus Jack and he did some great stuff with Dustin Rhodes, Barry Windham, Ron Simmons and Nikita Koloff. Such a shame it was all too brief!
