IIRC Zeus wasn't angry that Lycaon sacrificed his son. He was angry that Lycaon didn't believe he was Zeus despite all the signs, and instead had the gall to test a god. The fact that the test was a human sacrifice was just the cherry on top of it.

I was taught a different rendition of the werewolf legend. It involves King Tantalus, and a young goddess named Lyca. It goes like this: King Tantalus was one of the few mortals who enjoyed the privilege of dining with the gods. He abused this privilege one night, by killing his own son and offering him up for dinner. Zeus punished Tantalus by condemning him to enteral hunger in a grove of exquisite fruits he could never pick, and eternal thirst in a pure spring he could never drink. Meanwhile, he forbade the other gods not to eat the human meal. But a young goddess named Lyca was unable to resist her curiosity, and she ate. Zeus punished her by turning her into a wolf-like creature, and banished her from Olympus. Because she was a goddess, she retained her powers and strength, and over time found she could pass her curse onto those she bit or scratched. Those unfortunate souls became known as lycans, where we get the term lycanthrope.

The Neuri, a tribe living in Eastern Europe, were said to be werewolves. Interestingly, amongst the Serbs, a people with a high % of native pre-Slavic invasion Balkan blood, the name Vuk (wolf) is pretty common.

Nicely done. I wonder though if this is truly a Werewolf story, rather than just one of the many transformation stories in Greek mythos, since I've never seen any hint that Lycaon changed back and forth from human to wolf, etc.. That seems to be the defining characteristic of 'Werewolf' lore. Obviously, the argument could be made that this laid the groundwork...

Man, I never thought of there being an actual telling of the first werewolf, buy after hearing this, I'm stunned. Zeus punished the king for a good reason because this king was in fact as you said that in most stories of king lycaon was a monster and if acted like one he would become one. And that's why no king or queen should ever test the gods and what the kings or queens claim that would please the gods that would in the end reward the kings or queens for these actions and/or offerings. Anyway, well said here.

This myth is about the transition from worships requiring or permitting human sacrifice to a more "civilised" worship where human sacrifice was abhorrent. Mount Lykaion had one of the oldest cults of Zeus, if not the oldest, and it has been documented there was genuine effort to eradicate the worship of Lykaiou Dios (Wolf Zeus). It is not by chance that in the story Zeus appears as a traveller; in later centuries Ksenios Zeus (Zeus protector of hospitality) became one of the most dominant worships of Zeus. Basically it is a precautionary tale: abandon Lykaion Zeus in favor of Ksenios Zeus if you do't want to turn into wolves.

The god Apollo also had the epithet Lyceus attached to his name and this could be because he was invoked for protection against wolves or it could be that this god originated in Lycia in what is now Turkey. The Lyceum academy in ancient Athens took its name from this and the word entered into some European languages like LYCEE in French which is a type of school.Liceo in Italian.

You're thinking of Tantalus and Pelops. Pelops' father was Tantalus, king at Mount Sipylus in Anatolia. Wanting to make an offering to the Olympians, Tantalus cut Pelops into pieces and made his flesh into a stew, then served it to the gods. Demeter, deep in grief after the abduction of her daughter Persephone by Hades, absentmindedly accepted the offering and ate the left shoulder. The other gods sensed the plot, however, and held off from eating of the boy's body. While Tantalus was banished to Tartarus, Pelops was ritually reassembled and brought back to life, his shoulder replaced with one of ivory made for him by Hephaestus.

Before anyone started saying that Lycaon deserve what was coming to him, you should look at what Zeus did to Metis. So its obvious that Zeus is just as guilty as Lycaon as well. I am not defending Lycaon by the way.

Zeus is punishing Lycaon for the slaughter of his son, and yet Zeus is allowed to turn one of his own first wives, Metis, into a drop of water and consume her for her wisdom, and no one says a word? LOL Sure, what Lycaon did was horrible, but, uh...yeah, still. :/

Lycos (λύκος) is the wolf even in modern greek. Lycaon represerves the conflict between the differences and the conflict between the first Greeks and the previous inhabitants of the peninsula, the Pelasgians. The custum of human sacrifise was allien to the Greeks. So Zeus putted an end to his reign.
