Kumbh Mela, inscribed on the UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to take a bath at the holy confluence. Bathing in the confluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and the Yamuna and the mystical Sarasvati at Allahabad is believed to free a person of all their sins.
There is a story attached to this holy festival. According to Hindu mythology, Jayanta, son of Lord Indra, accidentally spilled a few drops of nectar (Amrit- the drink of immortality) at four places, while transporting it in a Kumbh (pot). These four places are identified as the present-day sites of the Kumbh Mela.
The festival is considered as the "world's largest congregation of religious pilgrims". We welcome you to experience ‘Divya Kumbh, Bhavya Kumbh’ at Prayag (Allahabad) scheduled from January 15th to March 4th, 2019.
