I only got to meet Dwayne McDuffie a couple times when I did some freelance for Milestone in the 90's. Ironically I was at Warner Bros Animation at the same time as him, but sadly I never got to work on the same project with him again. It's too bad because even in the brief exchanges I had with him, I liked him a lot. Needless to say, the Monday morning when we found out he passed was a bad one. It could be felt throughout the DC wing of the studio.

KittyKing98 I appreciate Milestone Comics for what they set out to do, but it’s time for more all black comic book universes, and ones that aren’t tying all the heroes into some social undertone. And heroes that don’t remind Black people that they’re depressed. People say Superman is corny and unrelatable, but they’re missing the point. I forgot who it was that said it, but “Superman doesn’t need to be ‘relatable’, he just has to be inspiring.” He symbolizes hope, Bats symbolizes justice, lantern symbolizes courage, etc. The heroes have to represent ideas. Milestone had DL superheroes, former slave superheroes, transgender superheroes... like the whole point should be to make the reader aspire to IDEALS through the heroes, and with those IDEALS they tackle the issues-issues which are symbolically illustrated by the particular story that the hero is in at the time. Icon is useless to a black boy if it doesn’t cause him to aspire to greater ideals. Wise Son’s weakness was alcohol and being a single parent. Let fantasy help black readers ESCAPE through inspiration.

Milestone had an full episode on Rob Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics that also dives deep into its history. I love that we are celebrating Milestone and since I’m older now I have a greater appreciation for these characters. I remember when I first saw Icon pop up in Young Justice, I freaked out. I'm glad this was done. I loved the original run it was done during my sophomore year of high school. It was a dream come true. The only nightmare which the series didn't touch on was how hard it was to find these comics. I saw in another doc how DC had to package these titles their bigger known titles to keep certain shops ordering them.

Honestly, I wish they had the funding to go indie, like Valiant. There is alot more space for that these days, like Valiant's reintroduction, or smaller successes like Lion Forge and things like Boom and Black Mask. I honestly feel like DC is going to continue getting in the way for these characters like they did back then. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

Should've mentioned Rocket Racer, Cardiac, Robbie Robertson and The Prowler from The Spider-Man line, Should've mentioned Gateway and Joanna Cargill from the X-Men line, should've mentioned the X-Men and Avengers both being led by black women in the 80s, Amanda Waller and Bronze Tiger in Suicide Squad, there's a lot here that seems to overlook existing representation. Seeing as Jackson King/ Battalion from StormWatch was going during the same time, would've been good to mention him, as well as the Tangent comics line. Naomi and Silencer were both recent characters that fit that demo that were solid, would've been a cool mention. As much as I like Milestone getting this documentary, I would love for others to do a more comprehensive take.

So true. One can also argue that Superman was inspired by the two pulp heroes - Doc Savage (1933) (theconversation.com/meet-doc-savage-the-most-famous-superhero-youve-never-heard-of-47745) and Gladiator.(1930) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladiator_(novel)) . Doc Savage who used science as one of his crimefighting tools, was also described as the "world's greatest detective"...hmm... now who else was given that moniker??? The Shadow who appeared in 1930 and was known to use darkness as a "weapon" and had the ability to "cloud men's minds" also had some influence on Batman. (www.cinelinx.com/movie-news/movie-stuff/the-shadow-the-super-hero-who-inspired-batman/)

Icon always had greater ideals. Milestone wanted to create action and adventure while showing the black experience. We black People live a different life and culture compare to other races. We tell stories and also tell what we have experienced. Now I agree with some milestone characters being a little too negative. But that’s just the black experience and issues.
