This is an interesting representation of what could’ve happened, but I prefer to go with the theory that the nether fortress belonged to ancient builders and that the wither was created in an experiment, trying to find a path to infinite life (basically Mat pat’s game theory)…

Manifest itself as a spirit form. But, with 4 soul sands and 3 wither skeleton skulls, it can physically manifest itself.
