Correction: I believe it was clarified that the shot they ended up using of Cruise hitting the building in the movie is not the one where he breaks his ankle. The one where he pulls himself up and walks off is though.
@tomstonemale
@tomstonemale 5 жыл бұрын
Wait, so he shot the scene a second time before or after he broke his ankle? Like one shot was good but the second time went bad or he broke his ankle the first time and then he tried again months later? Because even Jackie Chan learned the hard way not to do a stunt twice if he did it right the first time. Or even Buster Keaton years before him.
@ryannorthrup4725
@ryannorthrup4725 5 жыл бұрын
tomstonemale I think, and this is just my best guess, that they probably filmed the jump several times with the last time being the ankle breaking one (Cruise, after all, is all about perfection). They couldn’t use that take in the actual movie (because you can see his ankle breaking) so they used an earlier take for when he hits the building but then the broken ankle take for when he pulls himself up. Wish I could remember where I originally read this info...
@tomstonemale
@tomstonemale 5 жыл бұрын
@@ryannorthrup4725 Wow. It reminds me of that scene in Project A where Jackie falls from a building but these sunshades, I think, brake his fall. The "funny" part is, they showed in the movie two different shots with no continuity of Jackie hitting the ground, (in one of them, he hit the ground with his neck) and the guy still had to get up and say a couple lines before the cut.

I will admit it wasn't until MI 3 that I really got onboard with this franchise. Then after watching 4 and 5 and going back and rewatching the first one again that I realized how good it actually was. Clearly going with a new director each film was the way to go.

@Luiz Alexandre But that’s the point. I just watched MI: RN again today (my personal favourite) and it wears its influences on its sleeve, 70’s chase movies, Alfred Hitchcock, CASABLANCA and Jackie Chan movies. It takes all these ingredients, whacks them in a blender and says MI is movies, drink and enjoy.

I am a first-time documentary producer/writer/subject and I adore this video. I learned something. Actually, I learned a lot of somethings. Thank you for making the connections between the MI movies and Hitchcock. It occurred to me while watching MI-2, which is one of my favorites (I'm sure there's a neurological disease named for that), that it was almost scene-by-scene a remake of Notorious. The Mission Impossible series manages to pay homage to classic cinema while being its own creation and offer something new and fresh to audiences each time, just like you and Movies with Mikey. Thank you so much for this video. I look forward to discovering your channel.

Okay but the REAL best part of MI2 is that it was almost entirely filmed in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia. This was right after The Matrix has put Sydney on the map as a shooting destination, and the 2000 Sydney Olympics were right around the corner. So where does MI2 shoot? At the amazing skyscrapers of the central business district? At world famous Bondi beach? In any of the locations featured as Olympic venues? No. They shoot in the quaint beachside suburb of La Perouse. With its weird bushy-beach setting, decommissioned military bases, and random silos. What a location!

i love references to other movies/series bc it means that the makers truely love watching movies and respect others work and in mission impossible you notice how much passion went into the making.it tells the viewer the personality of the makers. they too are just people who want to become like their fav artist. (of course that does not mean every reference will make a movie better and that you cant overdo it sometimes)
@tatehildyard5332
@tatehildyard5332 5 жыл бұрын
Yes but I think it is kind of a double edged sword sometimes. A trap I see a lot of student films fall into is that they just knockoff the style of the filmmakers they admire (it’s usually either a Tarantino knockoff or a Wes Anderson knockoff).

Great video essay, both! I love this franchise, and I love the creativity every filmmaker brings to the series. Fallout was my most favourite of them all, and I can’t wait to see the next two films from McQ, but you know what, I would love to see Christopher Nolan tackle a MI film. Think about it. Both Cruise and Nolan are pro-film format (almost every Cruise movie is shot on film), both of them believe in practical effects than CGI. Both of them love action that is all about spectacle and innovation. So yeah, a Nolan directed Mission: Impossible film would be one of the most joyous things ever.
