The fact that our society is obsessed with looking for ways to extend our earthly life or artificially keep our youth also explains why the imagery turns people away. "As you are now I once was. As I am now, soon you will be."

I really like the Bulgarian word for relics from bodily remains, which literally translates to "mights" as in "powers". So we are usually talking about the mights of the saints. P.S. I know this is may not be etymologically related to the actual Bulgarian word for "might", but it is still interesting.
@caseydubois3645
@caseydubois3645 24 күн бұрын
That's very fitting, the ancient definition of a body was not so much just the physical corpus, but the sum total of all the abilities and possibilities that one possessed. This word for relics would fit right into that scheme.

Never understood why the image of a skull was made bad or evil. When I got older I never really looked at it like that. Under our flesh is still the amazing creation of God that gives us a sturdy frame known as our bones. The skull itself is such a magnificent design. Through out the life of humanity we have been intrigued by it and fascinated by the skull 💀, it’s shape , appearance, it’s design..🧐😃

Hello! It feels like in every single way have been made espouse Eastern Orthodox doctrine, yet I find them a tad exclusivist. In the same way the Council of Trent cried anathema at anyone who denounced priesthood confessionals, the second council of Nicaea claims that those who do not bow down and venerate icons are anathema, later defining anathema as separation from God. Now, I have had no problems with icons for a while; I think them good. But, while I would kiss them and cross myself, I could never bow, as that feels a bit too close to idolatry to me. Do as is alright between you and the Lord , of course, I won’t fight you on that: but is it not in 1 Corinthians where someone who does what they disagree with where they are considered sinners? Those who are a stumbling block to others more ignorant are guilty, but those who go against their beliefs are folding their integrity and thus not holding to their convictions-this is a textbook case of the church overstepping their bounds. I love the EO church, although I could never agree with every bit of any church sect and thus I could never be a full-fledged member of any in name, but what do modern EO say about this declaration by the second council of Nicaea?
@Patristix
@Patristix 24 күн бұрын
You've touched on some important topics. Discussing them is a little outside the realms of this channel and the comments section, and I'd most strongly recommend an in-person discussion at an Orthodox Church. There are also other more complex videos and articles on icons and Nicaea II available online. What would be good for investigation in regards to anathemas etc. is how do the EO define 'the Church', because that is where the anathemas are applied, within the EO definitions not the Protestant ones. Also to discuss is how much of 'veneration' is cultural understanding we've lost. Some people struggle with the kissing because in the West we've really changed our perception of kissing. Go East, and we kiss EVERYONE. Same with bowing. Bowing might be worship, but in the East it is also a sign of respect. Today an Indian or Japanese convert to Orthodoxy has no problem with a bow because that's just respect and worship doesn't come into it God bless

Every Christian, especially Orthodox, has issues with a few teachings here and there. But I am not the wisest man alive or even the smartest. If the Church is holy, and it's teachings guided by God, then I submit to those teaching even though I might have personal problems with them. Why? Because I'm a fallible human being, and if God tells me one thing and I think another, then I go with what He tells me. Now, I am at the point where I have accepted that the Orthodox Church is the one true Church (though I never really doubted that, to be honest, just grown more certain of it), you have to ask yourself four things: 1. Can two opposing statements be true at the same time?, 2. Then, can two opposing theological doctrines be true?, 3. If the answer is that only one of two opposing doctrines can be true, can two denominations with opposing doctrines both be according to the will of God, if God seeks truth above all else? And 4. If no, then is the Orthodox Church the one true Church? Since it claims to be, it can only be correct or incorrect? I wish you luck in figuring out whether you think EO Church is the one true Church. If it is, hope to hear of your baptism. If not, I wish you luck in your church. Just please don't sit on the fence for too long, either commit to it or don't. You will never be satisfied if you flip-flop from one church to another.
