Great informative video. I've had my 1955 Gold Top since 1970 and Bernie played it a few times with early Whitesnake when i was their sound engineer. Hugely enjoyable doing my job with Micky M. playing his ( can't remember what year his Gold Top was but def 50's, he had humbuckers fitted) and Bernie playing mine. Wonderful memories.👍🇬🇧

I have always wanted a '59 but when I've went to buy my first reissue Les Paul I could not resist the tone and sustain of a Murphy Labs Double gold R7 Light aged. It was head ans shoulders above any other Les Paul in the shop. At one moment I thought wait let me check the Normal CS R7 it might be the plain top and or narrow tall frets or what ever, but nope that one was just feeling dead in the hands and tone was not there. Got it for my 50th B-day as present to my self. In mean time only mod on it I have done was complicated enough. I have changed all the cables to proper vintage spec braided wire. Even wire from the pickups involving the hearth surgery on the Custombuckers Alnico III pickups. Man it was surely worth it. Guitar even became louder. Way more tone comes out of it while less is sucked by the cables capacitance. I feel so lucky that I've got this master peace. Thus is one in a thousand Les Paul. Not to mention that my second choice after the burst would be a gold top as homage to Duane, Billy G. , and many more people making history with it. Now it is my most often played guitar although I have few good guitars. I play it even more often than my PRS 594 Woodlibrary 10 Top that is on it's own crazy good guitar. Anyhow Gold tops rock and I love them.

Owned three gold tops, never understood the greening effect on them. Had an actual 56 w/P90's, checked all over and green where my right forearm draped across it. About 10 years ago bought a 56 RI it began to check and green in the first year. Now I have a '57 RI and it won't crack or craze or green. What I used to think was my body chemistry might just be paint makeup. Granted I did have almost 2 years of chemo, radiation and a bone marrow transplant which changed my body makeup, genetically and even my blood type...but, I tend to think it's the paint used. Chris you are an inspiration, Thank you.

Great video Chris. Hugely informative and with some very tasty playing. I've always been a Strat man but a few years ago felt the urge to buy a Gold Top (mainly inspired by Hubert Sumlin). Not having deep pockets I had my eye on an Epiphone Les Paul '56 Gold Top but they had temporarily stopped making them and I couldn't find a secondhand one. By chance I went into a local guitar shop to buy some strings for my Strat and there hanging on the wall was just what I was looking for. I asked the owner how much he wanted for it and he said that the list price was 500€ but that as it had been hanging on the wall for five years and no-one had shown any interest in it, he'd let me have it for 350€. He even threw in a gigbag. I took it home, cleaned it up, oiled the fretboard and restrung it and it came alive! It really sings and is a fabulous guitar for the price.

As always, such a nice combination of tasteful playing and great information. I have a '54 Goldtop with the corrected neck angle. It's completely original and plays and sounds like, well... gold. I love the wraparound tailpiece as it seems to grant more connectivity between the strings and the body, increases harmonic character, and relaxes string tension just a bit as well. Anyway, thanks for another great vid.
