I have the schematics for the 3dfx version - a friend worked for Sega Europe and when 3rd parry cleared out, the boss opened the cabinets, let them take pretty much whatever they wanted -cue my friend grabbing random bits, envelopes etc. When we got the 8 bin bags of stuff home, we opened one of the envelopes and it was the schematics for the 3dfx version. SEGA back in those days was like Schizophrenia. I certainly don't mean to put anyone under any kind of notion of stereotyping in anyway, but Sega Japan's and Sega America's "Split"(Schizo) sense on how Sega(the "mind"(phrenia)) as a whole should move forward really did damage amongst their brand(mental stability). Which created a split minded effect on the stability of their company(the body of Sega). And now, they're a shadow of their former self(catatonia). Sorry if what I'm saying may be a bit on the complicated side of explaining things. I admittedly have a tendency to use different ways of explaining certain subjects using different diminutives, logic, and other stuff to try make things well.......interesting.

Western companies had a big standing investment in 3Dfx hardware, both for PCs and arcade applications. A major portion of the Dreamcast's launch and first year arcade ports from Midway were created on 3Dfx based systems. Not being able to carry over low level code was a huge setback. The use of Windows CE to ease porting of PC games that used the DirectX APIs helped a bit but was little comfort to companies invested in 3Dfx's own GLide API.

Too busy measuring dicks with the Japanese!! Lol. Clear who wins that battle. Typical though Sega are absolutely clueless when it comes to business, and did the same thing to the Dreamcast - which is a shame because the hardware was pretty cool. But how did they encourage sales of this amazing new console? By rushing it out the door £100 overpriced with barely any games, and even less good ones. What wasted potential. To be fair though, Sega never made great consoles they always played the "other guy" in gaming. No ambition., the opposite of ALL the other players even Nintendo. And Nintendo are the WORST.

I know, many thinks that I am blind and love too much the 32 bits but for sure numbers don’t lies and we get some of the best rpg, shmup and fighting games on the Saturn, the Dreamcast wasn’t the same success in Japan and we get only a few ( but amazing) rpg. The Saturn's tenure as the bestselling console in Japan was very short lived and driven almost entirely by Virtua Fighter. Sony was very smart about understanding the inventory problems of the Mom & Pop stores that then dominated the Japanese game market and offered them the ability to place orders weekly for fulfillment the following week. This was a huge improvement to their stock management and being able to react quickly to hits and turkeys among new releases. Although Sega had been using optical media for a while, they hadn't really overcome the mentality formed during over a decade of mask ROM products that required orders to be made months in advance. That could put shops in a precarious position if they over or under ordered a title, as their next order would be fulfilled until after the game had faded from hit status or was universally known to be bad. Optical media cost no more for small orders than large orders and a production line could quickly change the files and image being placed on the discs. Mask ROM manufacturing is extremely lethargic by comparison. Thus Sony big win for the Playstation wasn't just in the content but in offering the retailers a better way to do businesses and thus lead them to recommend Playstation to their customers. A few years later everybody understood the full implications of optical media but in the mid-90s it required a new way of thinking about game manufacturing and distribution to fully exploit.

IDK sometimes prototypes dont make it for a reason. The Dreamcast was a fine console with a decent lineup and got pretty much killed by Segas constant mismanagement. 3DFX was a big number in the late 90s but pretty much died shortly after, so who knows how big the gap really was. I kind of doubt they didn't even bother to compare their consoles. The infuriating part IMHO is that they wasted all those resources on a separate console just to kill it off.

You can get VSA-100 chips for only $25 these days, and there are large quantities available because everybody wants the Revision 3 chips you can run at 200+ MHz. There are a couple guys who've printed their own custom boards and built their own Voodoo5 cards. I'd love to build my own for a Win98 gaming rig someday. And maybe someday we'll have a Voodoo on an FPGA too. @@MrDbrennen Sega alienated western developers many times over the course of the 1990s. First with the Sega CD they dumped on SOA with no documentation, pulling the plug on it by 1993 and leaving it to 3rd party developers and SOA to support, then with the 32X they poorly documented and pulled the plug on it within six months, then with the early Saturn launch, withholding dev kits, no dev tools until '96, not producing enough consoles to meet demand, launching at $399, and other Saturn shenanigans. The team that programmed SimCity for the Saturn worked on the game for six months before Sega sent them a dev kit. That's six months spent on the game with no hardware to test it on. Bernie Stolar totally humiliated Working Designs, which caused Victor Ireland to give up on Sega after the Saturn. They alienated EA and a handful of other publishers, too. The bait and switch on the 3dfx console was the last straw for EA and for many employees at SOA who walked out. You have no idea how annoying it is to be given one console to work on, make so much progress on your game, and then have the rug pulled out from under you and be told you had to reprogram it for another machine. Sega in the 1990s was one rug pull after another after another.

So, here on YT there is a video where the Power VR2 is directly compared to Voodoo 2. As it's been a long time since I watched I can't direct people to it, but I remember the results perfectly, the Power VR2 comes closer to Voodoo 3 in terms of raw performance. The bottom line is that yes, the Dreamcast was the right choice in terms of hardware, but perhaps the wrong choice in terms of consequences.
@epobirs

Black Belt would almost certainly have been based on Voodoo 3. It was a shipping product for PCs in early 1999, before the Dreamcast would have gone to manufacturing. Voodoo 2 would have been suitable for early dev kits but it's unlikely Sega would have used the dual chip arrangement required in the shipping console after the debacle of the Saturn's design.

I believe that hardware specs aren't as important as software library, and I have a hard time picturing the demise of Sega's hardware division if PC games could have been easily be ported over to their new system, especially considering that the US president was hell-bent on shipping a console equipped for online gaming.

Nothing ruins a game company like infighting. Sega fucked things up itself via its infighting between their Japanese and American branches before with the 32X and Saturn, and they did it again in the time leading up to the Dreamcast. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

Jealousy. Sega of Japan in general got pissed off with Sega of America because the Sega Genesis became a HUGE success in North America to the point where it defeated the SNES in sales for a few years while the Mega Drive (the Genesis in Japan) ended up in a third place position behind the SNES and PC Engine (A.K.A: Turbografx-16). The SMART thing to do would have been for Sega of Japan to work more closely with Sega of America. Sega of Japan made the better Sega game exclusives while Sega of America was better at business. Combine those two together and Sega could been even more successful. Instead, jealousy reigned supreme as Sega of Japan screwed over Sega of America in SEVERAL ways. # 1 worst moment was Sega of America getting offered the hardware that would become the Nintendo 64. If Sega of America would have been allowed to get that hardware, Sega of America would have added a CD drive to it. A Sega console with Nintendo 64 hardware and a CD drive would have ruled... but Sega of Japan out of spite blocked Sega of America from getting that hardware and then the hardware people went to Nintendo (who did take it and it became the Nintendo 64). Sega of Japan screwed Sega of America in multiple other ways after that, including purposely withholding info from Sega of America about the Saturn, causing Sega of America to make the 32X since they didn't know that the Saturn was coming out, especially so soon after the 32X, so they figured they make the 32X to try to extend the Genesis lifespan since they didn't know when the next gen Sega console was going to be released (The 32X came out November 21st, 1994 in the United States. The Saturn released the next day in Japan on November 22nd, 1994. Sega of America didn't become aware of this until a very short time before the Japanese Saturn launch and it was way to late to cancel the 32X, which is something they would have done back in 1993 when the 32X was being developed if they knew the Saturn was coming out so soon in Japan. Things got even worse when Saturn made a SURPRISE launch in the U.S on May 11th, 1995 due to Sega of Japan's decisions, which caused more harm than good). The peak moments of insanity between both Sega groups was the development of Sonic X-Treme (which resulted in a guy almost dying from being over worked and sick and the game getting cancelled, which caused irreversible damage to the Saturn). If both sides had worked together, things would have worked out so much better for Sega. Unfortunately, the Sega Civil War really screwed them over. You can't have a winning team if some teammates are attacking others on their same team.

I will say this. Sega Japan made the right choice with the Dreamcast specs. Where they went wrong was getting in bed with Microsoft with their Windows CE for that was a huge mistake. Another huge mistake was Sega cutting back on PowerVRs power and memory at the last minute to cut back on cost. If they didn't, the Dreamcast would have been an Naomi 1.5 in terms of power performance. Damn... Any else they went wrong? Yes, they didn't bring scud race, Virtua Striker 2 graphics but with worldwide soccer mechanics and gameplay, and arcade perfect Daytona USA as the launch titles. If they did that, the Dreamcast would have sold buckets. Regarding marketing, Sega of America's marketing was incredible! Destroyed everything and anything Sega Europe did as Europe wasted money. Heh, enough from me. I gone through this story far too many times, perks of working in the industry back then.

True however, 3dfx has more chipset offerings than videologic. The voodoo banshee would've been on par with the power vr2 clx2. Even better the voodoo 3 and 4.
@madhatter8508
@madhatter8508 2 жыл бұрын
@@maroon9273 The Banshee was just a Voodoo 2 missing a texture unit with a 2D accelerator bundled in, and at a higher clockspeed. Voodoo 3 was a derivative of the Voodoo 2 as well; they just doubled the clockspeed and bundled in the 2D accelerator from the Banshee. And while the Voodoo 3 could render as many polygons as the PowerVR2, it was rendering polygons the player couldn't see. However, the FPU in the SH-4 couldn't calculate that many polygons anyway, so I'm not sure how different the graphics would have been if at all. IMHO, the major benefit of 3dfx over PowerVR would have been more developers in the west, and there wouldn't have been a supply shortage like there was for the PowerVR, but Sega could not have seen that coming. I have no idea how much money they saved by going with the PowerVR, if any, but 3dfx was by far the industry leader at that time and that would have been a lot of good, free press for the Dreamcast.

In my opinion, what makes the Dreamcast so amazing is that SEGA, a company known for basically trying to release as many consoles at the same time, without considering whether people were even going to make games for the thing, decided; "Hey, how about we release just one console, make it awesome and actually release a Sonic game on it day one and get some third parties to make games for it as well?" AND THEN THEY WENT AND DID IT. But then... Then Sony... *runs out the room crying, the candles on my Dreamcast cake still lit* Edit: reason I even brought up the DC was because this awesome video was just another example of SEGA not knowing when to stop making hardware. Sorry if it seemed a little off topic.
