What really draw me to the Statue of Liberty the most were the broken chains right beside the statue's feet, which was rarely shown. Since then I truly understood and loved this historical statue.

Fun fact: the Statue of Liberty structure was inspired by the Colossus of Arona, a big hollow statue in northern Italy that was built between 1614 and 1698.

So Emma Lazarus wrote the sonnet to raise money for the base... IN 18... wait for it... 33 1833 The base of statue was completed in 1886. The same year the statue was unveiled. Where was this bronze plaque and when was it forged the 53 years between the sonnet and the unveiling. I wish we could ask Ms. Lazarus.

The color is green because that is the color of oxidized (rusted) copper. Though the oxidation is caused by the weather and atmosphere it's kind of silly and misleading not to say it's color comes from copper rusting.
