"My achievement was greater than the disappointment of not having the gold. To tell you the truth, I'm not even concerned with what the guy did anymore. I will never complain about life. I just have to thank God ” Vandelei words

It is an honor and privilege to see him light the Olympic flame into the cauldron, when the whole world is watching him. it is much better to be given that honor than not winning Olympic Gold Medal.

I remember in a interview just after the incident Vanderlei de Lima asked to the olympics committe that the flowers he received after the marathon to be delivered to his attacker (who was sent to a hospital). I guess that this says a lot about the man.

The fisrt one was an Italian and the second one an American. The Italian winner during an interview said that even if Vanderlei de Lima wasnt tackled, the Italian would win the marathon. What an arrogant man! He wasnt even able to see Vanderlei ahead when the stupid Irish tackled the Vanderlei.

Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima was the right person to lit the Olympic cauldron. I'm glad IOC/COI agreed and let him have this special moment in his life. He should have won the gold medal in Athens. He should be a Olympic champion! Unfortunately, things didn't work out as it should be. Maybe the gods and goddesses of the Mount Olympus knew by that time what would happen to him. So well-deserved!

Shame on the aggressor, but probably in Athens De Liva would be 2nd or 3d anyway. At km 30 He had 50 seconds on Baldini. At km 35, just before the aggression, 28 secs left. Really difficult to think De Liva could resist to Baldini's final rithm.

We will NEVER know if Vanderlei would win or if Baldini would pass anyway. Both possibilities could happen. We just can't say any of them 100% sure. Of couse all Brazilians (including me) would like to see him winning the marathon, but we cannot deny Baldini was closing the gap and was a very strong finisher. In history, there is no "if".

Yes, I agree with you. He was the best choice to lit the cauldron. I have heard that Pele was supposed to lid it but due to his health issues was replaced by Vanderlei de Lima. True on not, I liked de Lima having that honor to be last career of the Olympic torch and lighting the cauldron.

The guy that tackle him ended up giving him more attention and applause, the jerks that always try to ruin the fun and do those kind of things always end up being forgotten while the people they tried to take down end up achieving great moments and relevance, happy for Vanderlei de Lima

Yes, I have a feeling that it was him that was given the honor when the runners carried the torch were running across the stadium, before TV captures him appears on the spot before he runs up the stairs to light the Olympic flame into the cauldron.

Since marathoners rely on rhythm and constant pace, the attacker not only cost him the time, but interrupted his rythm, which could have been his gold. I saw it live in 2004 when channel surfing. Forgot his name, but some how youtube algorithim thought its relevant to me and bought back a piece of past like a time capsule.

This was not the first time that Irish, now ex-Priest, did something crazy during a sport event: During the British GP of Formula 1 in 2003, Neil Horan, his name, ran across the track of Silverstone Circuit, wearing an orange skirt and waving a religious banner. His protest took place on the 200 mph (320 km/h) Hangar Straight. Several drivers had to swerve to avoid him and the safety car had to be deployed to protect him and the competitors. Horan was tackled by track marshal Stephen Green, who removed him from the track before he was arrested.
