Later in life I can't believe what my Dad did as a boomer. He built the house we lived in, raised 4 kids on one income, bribed me to start reading as a kid with rewards like video games [which probably got me into College], only owned one new car in his life as he fixes everything himself, and refused to remarry now that my mother is gone because he wants to preserve his memory of her until he dies.

Difficult to do that now, the skills our dads and grandads had are being lost to time since we just bin and replace things when they break or technology is replacing it.

He used to homemake tie dye shirts and wear one everyday with his “identical twin brother’ he told everyone he had, even tho they were 6 years apart. They said they made all their stuff in shop class. Like literally every gift I’ve ever received was “made by my dad in shop class” (it was from a store) Our dads are awesome

As a GenX Dad, I'm lovin' this! However, do not forget about us 'Alternative' GenX'ers. Think Mods, and general Geeks and less middle America types of folks. Our Dad uniforms tend to revolve around black screen printed t-shirts more than the New Balance shoes. Instead of a waist pack we have tactical bags from Maxpedition and 5.11 because awesome. And instead of Dad Hats we still try to hold onto our 80's era hair styles like a skater wedge with long bangs and general coolness. Our dance styles are vastly different than the classic 'white boy' or 'sprinkler' as well. We were shoe gazers and can still go that route anytime The Cure comes on at the local grocery store. Or maybe this is just me!?
@AholeAtheist
@AholeAtheist 6 ай бұрын
Exactly. As I said in my comment(Millennial speaking here), blue jeans(or any jeans, but typically blue) and trainers or runners = the Boomer uniform. This is how you can tell the difference between a Boomer and Gen Xer, Gen Xers know you need casual or skateboarding shoes(often Chuck Taylor's) to go with your jeans, usually black. If you're wearing runners or trainers, you wear shorts or trackpants. These are the rules. Boomers typically have the plaid button up shirts(usually tucked in), or rugby or football shirts, whereas Gen Xers usually have a t-shirt with a band print or something else printed on them, sometimes maybe a footy jersey, but almost always with black jeans and casual shoes. Sometimes an older Gen Xer might wear the Boomer uniform, but not often.

Late GenX/Xennial dad here. I think a big part of the casual dress, dad jokes, etc. is that, as involved parents, we put our hobbies and social circles on hold to a degree. There's a good 10ish year span where I was working full time, taking care of my house, and parenting two small kids. There wasn't time for much else. My community became other dads. We just stagnate for a bit. I'm not complaining about this - just noting what happens. Now, when our kids get older we're able to re-engage in what we used to love. Your comment about listening to podcasts and self-help may indicate a bit more self-awareness about this and may take steps to intentionally re-engage. For me, it was mountain biking and music. Now that my kids are teenagers, their desire for freedom and independence also results in freeing up time for us parents as well.

I don't have many positives to share about my dad or stepdad, but anytime my stepdad was a good dad in my eyes, he embodied the good nature and jovial characteristics you presented in this video. I salute the good dads out there, and beseech the ones that merely show up or give the bare minimum can find it in themselves to try harder and do better- and if not, at the least let your kid know it's not their fault. I strive to be the best dad to my child if and when that day comes, and hope other people share my vision of a world where kids can get not just a dad that they want, but a dad they deserve.

My boomer dad just died in June, amd this really brought back some memories. I'm a 32yo husband and dad of 2 now, and some of my dad's quirks are making sense now. Some of them. My dad matched the style perfectly, except he had cheap clip-on tinted filters for his chunky 80s glasses. I still don't get the idea of tucking in the tshirt or wearing tall socks with shorts. I wear black, non-branded sneakers, jeans, and a tshirt everyday (untucked). My simple style is future-proof

Only Jesus Christ blood can cleanse us of are sins come to Jesus Christ today Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Come to Jesus Christ today Jesus Christ is only way to heaven Repent and follow him today seek his heart Jesus Christ can fill the emptiness he can fill the void. The Holy Spirit can lead you guide and confort you through it all Heaven and hell is real cone to the loving savior today Today is the day of salvation tomorrow might be to late come to the loving savior today John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus

You're so good in telling these stories. I have so much respect for that and especially all the research!!! Keep it going and if there is space I would be really exited about a new parkour featuring video, like finding spots with google maps...or did I missed something because you haven't uploaded one in ages? And what about the stream with Dom, will there be a video on KZfaq somewhere?

About the "Dad joke"... You nailed it when you mentioned the need for "humor" suitable for THE WIFE and kids.... It's really about the WIFE and not the kids. They NEVER appreciate the really funny (thus inappropriate) jokes... The KIDS laugh regardless, but if want to avoid having your wife SHIELD the kids from you, then turning down the dial on raunchy humor becomes a way of life... eventually, as you age, those dopey old jokes from those old joke books become useful again. Those crusty puns and one-liners are NOT even from our generation (Boomer), we inherited them from OUR parents.

I feel like my dad was a goddamn pioneer, he is over 65yo now but not only did he form the first (cover) metal band in our buttfuck nowhere redneck region in Finland, but he is also a fucking GAMER with his railroad tycoons and Age of Mythology or Civ. and by no means is he a nerd or a frail old man, he could probably still kick my ass if he really wanted to. I am a millennial in my mid-30s who is married, but has chosen not to have any kids with my wife. However, the older I get, the more I see myself falling into some of those dad stereotypes, even though I am not a dad, nor will ever be one. I find lots of joy in DIY projects, mowing the lawn, and find myself buying the majority of my clothes at Costco, because they produce good quality clothes for cheap prices. I care much more about practicality rather than my image. I have now had the same basic haircut for about five years now (yet to show signs of baldness/greying) and just haven’t really changed much in recent years and I’m quite content with my life and who I am in my personal life and career. While I do think my behaviors and style choices would be a bit different if I was still single and not having been married for six years, I think some of these dad stereotypes are less about being a dad and more about just getting older, more mature, and just realizing that you are who you are, and are probably not going to change too much Going forward. But then, again, I have also probably picked up some traits from some of my friends and family who are now dads when I hang out with them and their families, especially when I see my two young nephews, and attempt to dote on them as a caring uncle lol. It’s an interesting topic lol.

I can just picture your ancestors shaking their heads from the afterlife, wondering where they went wrong in the grand scheme of fighting for survival. But hey, who needs the pitter-patter of tiny feet when you can have the silence of uninterrupted sleep, right? Forget about passing down family traditions and stories; you've got Netflix binges to complete. Just remember, when your future self is stuck in a nursing home, surrounded by strangers instead of generations of descendants, you can console yourself with the fact that your bloodline extinction was a well-thought-out life choice.
@lukesherwin4137
@lukesherwin4137 6 ай бұрын
@@aesop1451 I believe that there is no such thing as an afterlife. My ancestors are dead and know nothing. I didn’t share this in my last statement, but one of the main reasons we aren’t having kids is because we are trying to take some pretty bad genetic disorders out of the gene pool. Also, there’s a high likelihood my wife would not survive pregnancy/childbirth due to a couple of these genetic conditions. Besides, there’s almost 8 billion people, the world won’t miss our genes. Also, I think it’s selfish to have kids just so you can have someone to take care of you when you’re older. I help my parents with some things currently and plan on helping them as they get older, but that’s because I choose to do so. They don’t expect anything out of me other than they want me to be happy. They offer support, but don’t dictate how I live my life. My wife and I live great productive lives with good-paying careers in the medical field with wonderful friends and family in our lives, and are saving for our futures. We don’t have a problem with other people having kids, they just aren’t for us. Everybody has a role to play in society, and a great many people choose to be in the role of parents (among other roles). We opted out of that role, and are happy with lives we created and the contribution we make to our friends’/family’s lives and society at large every day.

I had planned to parent differently and in many ways I have but by being more willing to discuss things with my kids, all I’ve managed to do is raise kids who expect to have everything explained to them and who aren’t satisfied with following directions just because an adult “told them so”. Granted I’m not a dad but the generational change in parenting still applies. I’m also just as, if not more, impatient as my dad was and lose my temper frequently. While I value different things and don’t see video games as an evil waste of time, I still have some of the negative traits my parents had. As a teacher, the biggest thing I notice is parents who are unwilling to believe their child could have any faults whatsoever. Not all parents are like this but those who are make teaching miserable.

Enjoyed the positive outlook at the end of this. The thought of being a dad in today’s world terrifies me and I am in my 30s. One comment I would make and not sure of the answer but could the higher successful marriage rates of younger people today simply be because fewer folks are getting married? I imagine that could play a role particularly how high rates became in previous generations.
