I’ll just be honest. This movie really had the scariest ending ever made. When the strangers took off their masks and we don’t see their faces, followed up by the line “because you were home”; it’s so chilling because sometimes having no motive is even scarier.

Yeah, "because you were home" is up there with the scariest lines ever delivered. The whole movie is decently scary, but that really took it up a notch. There's no reason, you were just available when we were looking to murder somebody.

When he answers the door and she asks "Is Tamera here?" And then he replies "No, I'm sorry. You got the wrong house" then she asks again "Are you sure?" My theory is that Tamera is the black hair pin-up mask girl and she is asking "Are you sure?" As in "Are you sure Tamera isn't in your house? Because she is" Just like the break-in scene from SMILE "Are you sure?"

The “Inspired by” for this movie is from the Tate/LaBianca murders created out by the Manson family and the unsolved Keddie Cabin Murders of 1981.

That scene where the stranger is just standing there and does nothing while she smokes and gets a drink...COMPLETELY TERRIFYING! Scariest scene of the whole movie knowing that he's just...THERE. He COULD have killed her right there but didn't. And she had NO idea he was there. SHIVER!!!

Bertino said that the real life inspirations for this were 1) the home invasion Sharon tate, manson murders. 2) 1981 Keddie Cabin Murders. Four people were killed in a small California resort town, including Sue Sharp, her son John, daughter Tina, and John's friend Dana. Disturbingly, the motive for those murders is still unknown, as the Keddie police department never caught the real-life killer(s), and the case remains unsolved. 3) Bertino's life experience. As a child, Bertino recalls a night his parents weren't home, and someone knocked on their door asking for someone who didn't live there. In a reverse of The Strangers, Bertino states he later learned that the people knocking were robbing houses in the neighborhood where no one was home instead of attacking people inside their houses.

Love these realistic horror movies. Technically a lot of them can happen like Halloween. Crazy dude can pop up stalking killing. That can be home invasion in a couple spots lol.

Totally agree. That’s why movies like Jaws, The Strangers, & Halloween ‘78 scare me more than like Evil Dead Rise because I’d sooner believe a shark or spree killer/home invasion would get me before being possessed by a demon 😈

Yeah, this was a fun one to watch in the theaters. Everyone was super quiet and anxious and screamed when the man shows up in the shadows behind her.

They are credited as Mormon Boy 1 and 2. But as someone who was Mormon this was written by someone who doesn’t know anything about missionaries. At the time this movie came out you had to be 19 to go on a mission. They look far younger than that. You have to wear a tie as a missionary. And you have name tags Elder then last name. Also most missionaries have a car.

This movie was more disturbing to me than any other. I watched it in the theater w/a friend and I was bothered after it ended. I’ve never watched it again and haven’t watched the sequel. Way too real for me!

I remember seeing this in cinemas too and as soon as the guy just steps out from behind her without her knowing, all of us went wild like "awww nahhh f*ck that!" 😂😂

I’m so happy that this particular situation can’t happen with my home security system bc whenever someone rings the bell or knocks, we check the cameras in silence and if we don’t recognize the person (or they look sketch) we pretend we aren’t home. Mute the tv & stay quiet until we see them leave. Works every time!!

Liv Tyler to me will always be Faye from THAT THING YOU DO! to me. Jonathon Schaech in that movie was my gay awakening. Along with Drew Fuller in CHARMED.

I love the use of Joanna Newsom in the trailer and the film. The line "Should we go outside? Should we go outside?" has such a creepy tone as the banging at the door happens. It scared my brother and I in theaters. He kept saying "No, don't go outside!"

Gotta admit, this movie would end real quick if the house has an alarm system and either of the characters carries a gun. Hell I would be calling the police the moment that woman showed up at the front door.
