This song blew me away, and each member was so vital. Burnel's filthy bass was incredible, Cornwell's thick, rough voice was perfect, Greenfield was tingling those keys, and Black's timing was impeccable! And of course the lyrics are interesting to say the least.
Thanks for watching!

I don't think I've seen Nick look so amused for the entirety of a song before 😄

They did a great cover of Dionne Warwick's Walk On By with an epic keyboard solo, well worth a reaction.

When I was growing up there was a cookery programme presented by this bloke called Keith Floyd - he wasn't a chef as such but he used to travel around cooking various dishes in a somewhat druken state. Anyway, Peaches was the theme tune to Keith's cookery programme. I miss those days.

I think it was Waltzinblack. Good old Floyd.

Hugh used to play guitar (pre-Stranglers) in Keith's restaurant in Bristol, I read somewhere. That's how Keith became connected to the band, if I recall correctly.

@@runningsuperska and Peaches also. I think both were used. Peaches I think was Floyd on France.

Keith was very much a chef. He was also a big Stranglers fan.

Floyds programmes used both Waltzinblack and Peaches and he started his chef career in the Army

Walking on the beaches... I saw The Stranglers live about 20 or so times over the years. Heartbreaking seeing Jet Black having to step away from the band, the last time I saw him play with them, he couldn't do a whole show and was taken off stage in an oxygen mask... To thunderous applause and cheers of course. JJB's bass is always class and absolutely rattles the entire venue, live.

That baseline - it was utterly beguiling when I heard this as a teenager in the mid 70s when it came out on the early days of punk, and it is utterly beguiling still. Boy, were we spoilt for pop back in the day. I suggest Nice n Sleazy by them next - a very odd, sardonic take on the conquistadors reaching the Americas.

This is definitely a very catchy, funny song, they do a great version of the Burt Bacharach song “Walk on By” “Nice ‘n’ Sleazy” is another great song

Untill this day, I find their third album "Black and White" avant-garde and special. Could have been recorded yesterday.

Once again I am so jealous of you- I would give a lot to be hearing the Stranglers for the first time. I only saw them play a couple of times later on but they were incredible. Maybe try "Nice 'n' Sleazy" next? Or I might again suggest "Down In The Sewer", the masterpiece that ends the album. Oh, and you were right, I was a wee laddie when this came out and didn't really understand the lyrics. That didn't matter though as that bass was something I'd have listened to on its own.

In the summer of 1991 me and my friends took a videocamera to the beach and filmed all the peaches that we saw - here in Denmark! 😎 Later me and a friend mixed a video of the footage to Peaches by the Stranglers. Every single man who saw the video - saw it from start to finish. And every single man who ever saw it, said it was good! Never the odd - nahh, I don't like it. It wouldn't survive 5 minutes on Facebook or KZfaq in modern time. But just imagine the perfect variation of peaches on a hot summer's day to this classic song :-)

Other comments below recommend "Nice and sleazy", which features incredible bass playing, and "Walk on by", which is an epic cover of the song made famous by Dionne Warwick. Both would be good choices. Of their later more commercial material, I would recommend "European female" and "Always the sun".

Glad you were amused and entertained. While "Nice and Sleazy" and "Walk On By" are great Stranglers tracks, the one I'd recommend is "Princess of the Strrets".

The Strangelers were always stiffled from mass success due to their intelligence and skill....To me they are like The Fall in that way, too clever and unique for their own good.. A captain on a ship I once sailed with had Burnels Triumph Bonnyville :)

Unfortunately you are in no position to comment on this song. You weren’t even born when it was written. You are inferring (wholly unconvincingly) that you are hearing it for the first time. You are American and cannot possibly understand the 1970s British psyche. Most of all you look like you have never seen or been near a ‘peach’ in your life. Don’t give up the day job!
