Hi friends, another video about the venerable Fender Stratocaster and the Jerry Garcia Sound. In this video we discuss pick up and tone settings, and my thoughts on what makes a good Strat sound better.

Man, i really need to finish fixing up my Strat. Got it set up for master volume and master tone, with a set of hand-wound Eastgrove pickups. From the store it came as a cheap 2013 Squier "surf strat", and it's been nothing but wonderful since i started upgrading its equipment.

I prefer the middle Strat pickup without a tone control on it. I'm in the process of rewiring a Strat style guitar (Carvin Bolt) and will wire the tone controls on the Neck and Bridge pickups. Should be fun!

I feel the same way about Jerry's tone. I have a 93 American strat and middle pickup is where I live mostly. I had a fender blues J.r that got stolen, and then I got a deal on a Marshall 2000 DSL 401 and I could NEVER get the tone I wanted out of it, and I hate it. Makes me not want to play. I blew another power tube, so I decided to fix it and sell it. I tried different speakers on the Marshall and it just sucked no mater what i did I'm the mean time, I pieced together a rig with a 15" Carvin monitor and believe it or not a Pyle 750 watt PA amp. I love the tone on his thing! Duane Allman had a lot to do with Jerrys tone and style, IMHO>

I am trying to learn guitar and the Jerry sound. I bought an American Strat and a new Fender Blues Jr . It looks like I got the first step correct !

i got a squire 40th anniversary vintage style and boss katana mk2 50watts with a fender twin verb studio matched sound patch... it gets so close, i cant believe it my self :'D

The spec sheet says HW Strat Fat 60’s. Disclaimer: I haven’t taken the pick guard off the guitar to check and see for sure.

In my humble estimation, it’s the sum of a lot of little things. In its essence the high output pickups being amplified by a cleanish fender style amp and fed to JBL or equivalent speakers get a lot of it. The details and the little things add up, keep an eye on the channel, we are going to try and figure it out a little.

Every Garcia rig clone has vertical speakers....Why?

I think there’s a bunch of reasons. It’s partially aesthetic, but it’s also partially the way the speaker cabinets are arranged in the original wall of sound in ‘74. Also stage real estate is/was scare, even in the real GD. The Dead where really into the science of sound waves. I have to believe it had something to do with that. Additionally, in a Dead band setting, it’s nice having a speaker squawking at you from about belt height front rather than from way down on the floor.
