Computer Chess Engines have gotten stronger each year with current engines like Alphazero, Stockfish, Komodo, and Leela Chess Zero reaching new levels of perfection monthly! Check out how computer engines have developed in the last 30+ years, from weak machines, easily dominated by humans, to monsters!

Hi everyone! Here are some notes on our data sources. In general, it's very hard to properly benchmark computer engines, especially Deep Blue, AlphaZero, Leela Chess Zero, etc. We used the best available data and plan to publish updates in future as rating estimates for 2020 and further are made available. The primary data source is the SSDF (ssdf.bosjo.net/list.htm) list as collected from online sources and publications in the International Computer Chess Association Journals (later named International Computer Games Association). Deep Blue's Elo Performance is estimated by perf. against Kasparov. AlphaZero's Elo Performance is estimated by perf. against Stockfish. Leela Chess Zero's Elo Performance is provided by the Leela community: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XSJiCcQpCLv0fNwrUn7jXjdkZFU63YFEWpdXv6dSSg0/edit#gid=312836954

Well, there are a lot of wrong stuff there. For example shredder 13 was signifficantly weaker than stockfish at release, it's even weaker than stockfish 7. Komodo was never within 50 elo range in past 3-4 years. Etc. You should use fastgm list for latest data - it's the best and the most reliable one for sure.

Deep Blue was just IBM throwing massive hardware at the problem. Turns out that a big supercomputer with specialized chips beats the hell out of one weak CPU. Deepblue is overrated IMO. It wouldn't have defeated a fresh Kasparov with the right game plan and certainly wouldn't have defeated prime Karpov. i think this is doubtful. it didn't take them that long. the playing strength of Deep Blue is overestimated here. it's only based on the result against Kasparov - very small sample size. this rating should have a question mark next to it at best, as provisional. DB never played against other engines (not to mention other engines weren't running on supercomputers). and Kasparov clearly played below his strength in the match where he lost, it was a psychological issue and a strategy error on his part (he tried to trick DB, assuming it was more limited than it actually was; hence his cheating accusations later on).

@@Will_of_Iron Not only insane, but also too good to be true. Stockfish's 4000 elo is for Fisher random chess, not for "normal" chess. Most of the top engines don't bother developing their engine on other variants, so it is not surprising that Stockfish is in a league of its own. As of January 2023, Stockfish 15 still leads the ranking for normal chess with an elo of 3531, followed by Komodo (3530) and Fritz (3512).

@@DrewPicklesTheDark During the 2000s and 2010s, chess at the top level became a lot more tactical, as players began using engines like Stockfish for training, and to evaluate lines. As a result, the number of decisive games decreased. Remember the +0=12-0 from Carlsen against Caruana? When AlphaZero destroyed Stockfish with its much more aggressive, human-like play, some expected that to affect how humans approach chess as well. I don't think we have seen much of that yet. Maybe it is too early, or maybe that aggressive style requires super-human precision to be successful.

It would be interesting to pair the performances of the engines against the breakthroughs made in their analysis and reasoning. For example - the reason Deep Blue (and Deeper Blue) were so good wasn't just horsepower - the software developers made a breakthrough in getting the engine to make best bets on the move tree, investing effort in promising branches, and disregarding others (there are a couple of really good books about the development of the engine).

Besides a 100 game sample being trash and playing everything from start position skewing results by repeating many lines over and over, which means minor changes in early preference while keeping general strength identical can have dramatic effects on the results ; Stockfish was badly misconfigured. Fixed time per move, laughably small hash for the hardware and TC.... In the final 2018 paper, the results were +50 elo against SF8 (instead of +100 elo in the preprint) from start position and +30 elo from a set of 50 TCEC positions (despite those being less drawish).
