Thank you so much for a fantastic review, Alan! For the record, If some of you are interested in ordering a pair of Dumblers, we would recommend checking the diameter of the hole in your plates beforehand and make sure they are 2''. If you are buying new plates, you should be good, because most Olympic standard plates out there are 2'' in diameter. These are really impressive, both qualitywise and clearly for the engineering that goes behind them; i am currently considering getting a pair of olympic dumbbells - i'd be using them mostly for rows, overhead presses, split squats, goblet squats, possibly some snatches, etc - and so far i've narrowed it down to these two: the Dumbler or the Rogue DB-15. If, say, i were to go with the DB-15, i'd get a pair of OSO collars with them which i could then use for all my barbell work, whereas with these from Gungnir i'd have to buy the barbell separately. Also, i've noticed that the Dumbler is a ever so slightly shorter that the DB-15, meaning less room for plates to be loaded and, intuitively, fewer weight capacity (not so sure, though). The quality seems to be excellent for both, though the Dumbler may be a bit higher, or at least they look that way to me. Lastly, there's the convenience: through the Rogue website i'd be able to get not only the dumbbells but also the plates - the Dumbler i'd have to order it directly from Gungnir and then buy the plates elsewhere (i'd still buy the Rogue change plates). So, when it comes down to it: what shall i do?

I have a pair and use Rogue rubber change plates with them. There’s a a very small amount of slop, but they’re very silent because of the rubber. The knurling isn’t aggressive, but it’s “sticky” so to speak. That being said, these dumbbells are awesome, and Gungnir’s customer service is top notch. I would definitely recommend them.

Great review. I was lucky enough to get a lotto drawing for the Ironmasters, and I have a VERY small area to work out so they will fit my needs. I wouldn't even mind the rattle when the plate is secure with these you just reviewed. The only thing that would inconvenience me with these is that I would have to move a lot of plates with a 2'' diameter holes, and it takes a lot of time (no plate tree. so they are kind of scattered). ATM I'm using some regular big box store dumbbells with standard 1 inch holes on them. the spin locks are okay, and I don't mind when those get loose because it would take quite a bit to unscrew all the way off. I do like to use your method when I get on, and off the bench with using my knees and, the natural weight of the dumbbell to bring myself back upright. two biggest gripes would be I don't want to get stabbed by the end of the bells, and or have them roll away from me, and smash into my garage door. I had no idea brands like Baadass, or Peppin existed at the time or I could have saved myself A LOT of money. The square shape would eliminate smashing my garage door, but of course they are VERY expensive.. I have wanted the IM's before covid hit. However, it's way overkill for my home gym. I can only take solace in the fact that I'm getting exactly what I'm wanting, and they are very high end pieces of kit.

I'd like to see how they hold up after a year of bro's dumping them fully loaded after a set of DB bench. Plus those groves will need to be periodically scrubbed of chalk, curd etc since the collar relies on a precise fit to lock. They're a beautifully made, but you muscles cant tell the difference.

@@ExternusArmy Yes, I agree. This should have been a feature from the get-go. What I'm suggesting is there to be a universal adapter that makes it possible for oversized weights to be locked in. As in, when Alan is able to lift the weight from the bar after the collar has been locked in there can be affixed a thin round plate to prevent the weight from falling off. 1 for the inside where the hand grips and the other for the outside of the bar. Hope I'm making some sense.

It looks like the built it collars are their main selling point and biggest driver of the steep price. The collars are a brilliant idea and do work (although imperfectly), but come across as an unnecessary and expensive alternative to just using normal collars, and consequently feels like a gimmick. (Yes it's spelled like that) I have one of their sets that can be loaded with up to 200lb per handle and DROPPED. They actually have a lifetime guarantee against all breakage. Also, they use an internally threaded handle with flat end posts, so you can put them on end on your legs etc when getting into bench position like you would a fixed dumbbell. Standard oly dB handles that I've had for like 20 years and dusted off during the pandemic....are still like $60. But attaching strong enough collars means ur taking away space for thick 25lb plates. I saw someone on the internet rec .99c hose clamps and boys....that worked like a charm. Was it a slight pain in the ass to screw/unscrew those to change weights? A little...if these db's were $200 or less I'd consider them, that locking mechanism is slick I will give them that. But I have some concern about the durability of that locking slide. So for $400 no way. It seems like this company company should have come up with a better locking mechanism that could go over standard made db's. The way they designed this is certainly cool but u can see where it added considerable machining expense. Maybe if they update this design with a more sturdy looking lock mechanism....or as I suggested a thinner lock mechanism that can be married to a standard machined db to get their costs down. But these are more than my duffalo bar.....I couldn't justify this purchase. But kudos for a slick AF design. Just seems like it needs some tweaking. I'm no strongman but I load up my dbs with well over 100lbs and they do get dropped after a set....under control ofc but one end lands before the other and I just wouldn't trust that magnet to hold up over time.

Great product and review but, $450 is a pretty hard pill to swallow. Seems more cost effective to start out with a fixed set of 25-45 lbs dumbbells then add more as you get stronger. The 5-20 lbs; you can always lift weight plates. I did interchangeable back in the day. It sucks regardless of how fast you can take the weight off and put the new weight back on (twice!). Gets old really fast. I also never enjoyed a 45, 55, 60 lbs bar digging into my thigh right before a dumbbell bench press. Just my 2¢.

This is an interesting product because on the one hand it is targeted to homegym owners on the other hand it doenst make a lot of sense to a himegym owner to invest 500$ for loadable dumbells. Like you cannot do dropsets or supersets with different weights and most homegyms dont have 4 of a kind in each plate. Also another thing is that if they indeed have magnetic collars they will eventually get demagnetized especially if they get hit so i wonder how much they will last.
