The saint slaying the dragon is always St. George. Byzantine iconography has very specific rules, it's all symbolysms, including the choice of colour. Great videos, enjoy your time there!

This is wrong. The first (chronologically) Saint to be pictured slaying a dragon,is Saint Theodore,who was actually called The Dragon-slayer. St George comes after but,again, he is not the only one permanently being painted in Byzantinee Hagiography. You have St Demetrius (Dimitrios) too,he's slaying a dragon or a snake too.
@xristidi
@xristidi 2 жыл бұрын
'ΑΓΙΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ' as depicted on the icons & frescos themselves is the most wide spread of the dragon slaying saints (St Demetrius - Thessaloniki & St Theodosius are also common warrior saints). From all the ΑΓ. ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ icons in there, but mostly from the fresco above the altar, this little church is dedicated to him and would be locally known as "St. George's church/chapel"..

One of the most common questions people ask is “How many Greek islands are there?” Depending on how you define what an island is, Greece has around 6000 islands! Most of them are tiny and uninhabited, but even so, you will have 227 inhabited, gorgeous islands to choose from.

I've been going to Tilos since 1998 and I'm dumbfounded by your videos! Lovely work ❤️ Edit 1: There wasn't an earthquake in Tilos, it was just a common practice for people to actually rip their roof off and carry it with them on their new home back then. Edit 2: Lol I'm writing as I'm watching the video: Fun fact about Charkadio cave, it was uncovered in the mid 40s during WWII, when an Italian warship fired a warning shot from Agios Antonios bay that hit the mountain, revealing the cave.

The Greek Orthodox Church is a living community, and keeps records , has all its shrines listed, including the one you visited here. It is dedicated to St. George, the Soldier, Defender of the community against the Enemies of the Faith, symbolized by the dragon. It is an Icon, not merely a picture, if it has the name of the saint written on it. Usually at the left side it says O Agios ," The Saint," and on the right side it says the name, in this case Georgios, and under, any titles. often, for example, "Bishop of Tilos'", etc. Glad to see you taking the time to see these small islands of Greek culture, and filming them for us, and even, practicing reading signs --and Icons,--in Greek!

I heard of greek villages where people all emigrated abroad or to larger cities leaving behind these ghost villages. Mostly due to economic reasons… a sad vibe this ghost town because it’s so beautiful… in Portugal gas is 2.15 Euro right now. In Slovenia there are gas shortages at a few gas stations. The iconic paintings are Greek Eastern Orthodox often depicting Saints.

Very nice presentation of these smaller and lesser known Aegean islands. The images in the church are based on the Byzantine representation of saints and the image with the dragon represents St. George killing the dragon that was terrorizing a village. One thing common to the Greek islands is the very narrow streets that look like a maze and the closeness of the houses. These were defensive measures against pirates and the Turks. The maze of the narrow streets would confuse foreigners who did not know the way around and the closeness of the houses would allow the inhabitants to escape by jumping from rooftop to rooftop..

Hi Gabe...I've just had a week chilling and exploring on Tilos after walking on the Lycian Way. I asked some locals about the structural damage to Micro Chorio and was told it was bombed by the Nazis. I heard this happened on Kastelorizo too and maybe on other Dodecanese islands as well... The elephant cave was just a bit higher up past the museum but access wasn't allowed. Amazing island though and great for hiking, trails everywhere. Looking forward to seeing your new Himalayan adventure....🙏

I see, wow, very interesting if that's the case. I wonder why they would bother dropping bombs on old ruins on remote Greek islands? Maybe stray bombs or perhaps allied soldiers were hiding there. It would be pretty interesting to hear the full story.

Gabriel the small church you went to is the Church of Saint George. St. George is depicted slaying a dragon. It has nothing to do with the Knights of St John. Elephants seem to have roamed Greece in the past… in Crete they discovered elephants the size of a dog.

Gabriel: at 11:35 that's the incredible Micro Chorio Cafè bar, open at nighs only, for a unique experience of a drink in an abandoned village, there's a free shuttle bus service departing from Livadia every night to reach this stunning spot. A highly recommended must do when in Tilos!

These islands attract me a lot since they offer the perfect holiday atmosphere. Also since my first name is Tilo it is a must. I recommend Simi as well. I was there 1998 and it was spectacular. Only 5 km from Turkey.

Gabriel, the icons in the small church of the knight, those are all images of Saint George who is a saint in Greece and the Middle East for the Christians. There is almost not one village or town that does not have a shrine, a church or cathedral dedicated to Saint George who is known as Saint George the Martyr. He was a Roman soldier and then embraced Christianity and was killed for his faith.
