Sumia's role is to be Chrom's personal taxi so he can fly around and annihilate an entire army

You know, for a ship the devs were clearly pushing to be canon, you'd think they would have given them a less atrocious support conversation. If she ends up with anyone in my playthroughs, it's usually either Gaius or Robin because of how much more adorable her chemistry with those two is compared to Mr. Lord no.14 over here.

The part about the queen/Sumia getting written out is why I love chrobin so much. We don't see chrom's wife reaction because robin is his wife and she killed him. The queen is at all the war meetings because you play as Robin. I can't remember all the details but Lucina purposely not getting close to her mom makes sense if she knows her mom will kill her dad. Narratively, chrobin make more sense (even if it was accidental and not what the dev intended).

Adding to the idea that Sumia is the intended wife for Chrom and mother to Lucina, Sumia is the woman who Chrom requires the least support points with to rank up, needing 2 for C, then 4 for B, A and S, whereas Sully/Maribelle need 3 for C, 4 for B and A, and 5 for S, and then F!Robin and Olivia need 4 for C and B, then 5 for A and S. In terms of his automatic marriage, he also has levels of priority for if support levels are shared, where Sumia is second only behind Olivia, which I imagine is mainly to make getting her marriage easier when there’s only one map to build support with her before Chrom marries. Having both narrative and gameplay indicators to Chrom and Sumia’s relationship definitely implies some intent to have her marry Chrom imo.

Idk It’s kinda clear Ike doesn’t reciprocate any feeling towards any of the female characters in FE9 and 10

It's like IS was banking on both Sumia and her pairing with Chrom to be popular and when the reception ended up being lukewarm, they just quietly swept her under the rug since her fellow pegasus knight, Cordelia, ended up being one of the breakout characters of awakening.

Ike doesn’t end up with Elincia because Ike is not romantically interested in women

I strongly believe that the fact that we can even imagine and desire further chararacter developlent is proof that awakening did a fantastic job at character development in the first place. This was not a dialogue heavy game with only 10minutes-ish of support dialogues for each character, yet someone like you can take from that and expand out so much (kudos to your creative brain as well) of these characters means they gave us enough to be invested into them. I know your point isn't that awakening has bad character development but I just find it impressive how sometimes, the less a game gives us, the more room we have in our minds to expand on these characters on our own and there's a certain charm about that.

I hated Sumia as a kid because I thought she overshadowed Sully who still is my favorite option for chrom. Funnily enough it was finding out that she had the same birthday as me that made me look at who she was outside of chrom and now she holds a special place in my heart

Sumia's been one of my favorite Gen 1 Awakening characters alongside Henry, so it sucks knowing that because the devs wanted her to be the most canon option and that didn't pan out, they basically gutted her relevancy in favor of Cordelia ever since. Seriously, she didn't get to be in Warriors and she has no alts in Heroes as of now.

I never heard of anybody being confused about why Ike doesn't end up with Ellincia. Ike shows extreme discomfort with Aimee being interested in him, and in Radiant Dawn, his paired endings are with Ranulf and Soren. In Japanese, Ike (a swordsman) and Ranulf (who is nicknamed "Kitty-Cat Man" by a certain character) are even a sort of stealth pun.

Sumia is basically the vanilla ice cream Chrom option for awakening. A bit basic but nothing out right wrong with it and ideally you can do more with it.

The issue with Sumia is the fact that she was pushed with Chrom in a story, where she is completely irrelevant, and adds nothing. But it's exasperated by the devs temporarily pretending that she's the story's heroine, only to drop her as soon as Chrom gets married.
