In this video I explain in about four minutes the Summa Theologica by St. Thomas Aquinas, including it's various parts, the reason why St. Thomas wrote it and why every person should read and study it!

@@thethomist It's my pleasure. Aquinas is excellent and should be spread far and wide. Does Aquinas ever comment on reconciling Divine Simplicity with the Freedom of Divine Acts. Maybe an idea for a future video.
@thethomist3 жыл бұрын
@@fiveadayproductions987 Hmm. That's a great question and the very fact that you can ask such a question tells me you have a good grasp of this subject matter. As you likely know simplicity is the first attribute of God that St. Thomas describes in the first part of the Summa. And of course God being Divine He would be perfectly free and have perfect free will but with always 'choosing' the good and the true. So in His Simplicity I'd say His very existence would be the same as His simplicity would would be the same as His freedom, since God simply is. Does this make sense or is this what you had in mind with the question? Thanks!

I love this brief description. Looks like Aquinas was a disciple of Jesus, wasn't he? Thx for the video

Hello Henri. Yes, St. Thomas Aquinas was certainly a disciple of Jesus. He was a master philosopher and theologian but most importantly a son of the Most High God and a lover of Jesus Christ. Thanks for the feedback- Dave

The amount of people that think this is okay is deeply concerning, not to mention with absolutely no background context other then her asking for HER phone back. Of course that woman shouldn’t have hit him, but that doesn’t give the green light for 250lb man to lay hands on her.

I suppose my question is how easy is it to read through the five volumes…….I haven’t come across it….even in Catholic bookstores?
@thethomist3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. The ease or difficulty of reading it really depends on your ability to grasp philosophical concepts, your level of patience and also your interest in the subject matter. I had a lot of interest in learning the Summa so I plowed through it pretty easily but I also realized that there would be many things I didn't understand fully so I had to be easy on myself. The full Summa can be found in many Catholic bookstores but if you can't find it there is can be purchased easily on line. There is a hardback and a soft cover version. I'd read a bit if of it on line first to see if you like it before investing in what it will cost to buy the whole thing. You can find the whole Summa pretty easily by doing a search. But nothing compares to having a real, physical copy to read! Let me know how it goes for you! God bless- Dave

Thanks for the video. I grew up Catholic, but went down the road towards atheism. However, I have been slowly retreating from that position, not as a matter of reestablishing belief, as I’m not sure I ‘can’ believe that God exists (perhaps that will change again), but rather to find some meaning, purpose and love in life, and because I saw that atheism is in some respects morally bankrupt. I only heard about the Summa recently from an interview with Arthur Brooks, so I’m excited to jump into it. Do you have any tips about how to approach it, or anything to read beforehand to better appreciate it?

Hello and thanks for the note and telling me a bit about your journey. I'm so glad you found this site and I can certainly direct you to other resources. Learning the basics of Thomistic philosophy will be a big help to you. Of course, it's based on a belief in God but you can certainly dig in and see if you're convinced by his arguments (Question 2, Article 3 of the first part of the Summa has to do with the Proofs for God's existence). Regarding just getting started I would recommend you check out G.K. Chesterton's book called The Dumb Ox which is an easy to read and brief book about St. Thomas Aquinas. Also, The Aquinas Institute is also producing nice videos based on the Summa and the teachings of St. Thomas. They can also be found on KZfaq. Please reach out if you have any questions and I will be very happy to help you. In the meantime, be assured of my prayers as you begin your journey in learning the Summa. - Dave

I'm an atheist. Could you elaborate on "morally bankrupt" atheism? Most of wars and massacres over the past millennia have been performed with a religious thematic and a premise about one divinity. Nowadays corrupt judges have the outrageous privileges that the priesthood used to have centuries ago. In regard to indoctrination, nowadays the mainstream media have replaced the pulpit. Back then, the scare and extortion about hell and eternal damnation persuaded people to give up their rights, whereas now the brainwash about infections and death from a so-called virus, climate change, and so forth, does the trick.

The hypostatic union means a single person with two natures- Divine and human. Jesus is a divine person with both divine and human natures. Ultimately, it's a mystery. thanks for the question.

I think evolution beats God on the beauty in the world. We only have one life on this beautiful planet, so respect Mother Nature.
@thethomist3 жыл бұрын
Ally, I ask this with sincerity. You seem to credit evolution and Mother Nature with creating the beauty that we experience. Does Mother Nature have intelligence? Does she order and create the beauty? Who exactly is Mother Nature?
@cynthia80693 жыл бұрын
@@thethomist Yes. Look at science, look at ecosystems. Nature is a living organism.

Who created Mother Nature in the first place? That’s your go to position.
@thethomist3 жыл бұрын
@@jimlarkin6683 I think people use the term 'Mother Nature' to really mean God, the force or intelligence behind that which we experience in the natural world, the one who creates the weather, etc. So if one believes in Mother Nature I'd like to know if it's just God under a different name and if so, then we're in agreement. We call God Father and they call God Mother and since God is pure spirit, neither is a perfect description of God's Essence and nature as God is without sex or gender.
