I love how comic the part where the Sun is almost in touch with the Earth, and the instant that happens the Sun changes from dying star to superheated blue giant in a few seconds. It's like the eldritch God has been ewakened and wanted to mortals to see them ascending before they eyes.

Oh! I finally get to use some of my obscure space knowledge! So, the things that start happening from 12:30 ish are kinda similar to an actual thing that happens in space: Brown Dwarfs! Brown dwarfs are, basically, failed stars. They're large celestial bodies made of gas, usually starting at several times the size of Jupiter. At these sizes and masses, the gas begins to be heavily compressed and squeezed, creating heat. However, brown dwarfs don't have *quite* enough mass for that pressure to start causing nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium. Because of that, they give off significantly less energy, and no light. The tidal forces and high pressures can still give heat to orbiting bodies however (the same thing happens on a smaller scale between planets and moons), meaning that, even lacking the light of true stars, they do have the potential to support (some probably very strange) forms of life. Absolutely NO clue what happened that suddenly switched the sun back on near the end though

The extreme differences in the temperatures around the 9 minute mark is probably because you've effectively cooked the ozone layer off the planet, so daytime is super hot at the equator and night time is super cold. Ice is building up at the poles because it stays colder than it originally was much more of the time.

I think the sun started going up in temperature because there was way too little mass for such a big volume. The usual density of the sun is 1408 kg/m^3, the density of air is 1 kg/m^3. The density of the sun at an .745 au radius would have been at 0.0003 kg/m^3. Which would be so gasseus that the molecules would hardly ever collide, and what ever light coming from the fusion at the core would just go straight through.

this somehow reminded me of a crazy game called "spaceplan prototype". it's a nutty clicker/idle game where you are stuck on a damaged spaceship, and are trying to fix it. you start by clicking, then make some potato batteries, then other potato-themed stuff like "Spudnik" satellites... then you finally make the sun turn into a black hole, and try to use it to travel back in time! i don't want to spoil the crazy ending...

The most likely reason why the sun suddenly became really hot again at around 15 minutes is because the sun is, despite the low density, big enough to temporarily restart nuclear fusion, in fact big enough to fuse heavier elements like helium, carbon, oxygen and neon into heavier ones, which releases alot of heat and energy. Once it runs out of fuel (accumulated very heavy elements that the sun can't fuse even at that size) it no longer produces energy and cooled back down, and with the low density, very rapidly. Needless to say, such a star would have a very high concentration of heavy elements, with likely a very large metallic core, maybe much more than stars now.

Watching Gray unknowingly simulate the actual death of the sun was enlightening. Even though he was in the dark as to what he was doing, it shed light on the death of our solar system. Thanks Gray for brightening my day.

*Day 137 of asking... Challenge for Gray: Try and complete a challenge with no checkpoints that take 9 hours to complete. The twist is that the board disappears after you touch it, and in order to reset it, you need to restart the board (before anyone complains... Yes, there will be parts of the board where Gray can have a break, and yes, there will be a teleporter at the end, where Gray has 2 chances to get the correct road path correct (Which won't despawn) if he fails at getting the correct path correct then he just need to restart the map. AND... yes, it is possible, and what I mean by two hours is that no matter what difficult board he plays, would probably take 2 hours, but Zach just edits out most of it, so it's suitable for a short yet entertaining clip) Yes, there will be a 10 second timer before the board slowly disappears and there will be parts of the board that won't disappear and there will be a script at the end where it teleports Gray to the beginning and resets the board, and there'll be 3 teleporters, he'll have to guess correctly, one crashes his game, one forces his game to force restart, and the final teleporter gets him the win. (Just kidding, all teleporters are guaranteed to get him the win, there will be a text saying there's one teleporter that works)*

Some of the video reminded me of it, but 17:50 REALLY reminds me of Sephiroth's "Super Nova" attack from Final Fantasy 7.... In fact, you can even play "One Winged Angel" in the background while watching that part.

I think, IRL, the size of the mass of the sun wouldn't be able to support it's size and it would collapse into a white dwarf. Which....is technically what seems to happen in this video, only without the collapse, to it's just a white giant, but still doesn't produce a lot of heat, thus, the Earth was fine so close, which...would be about the correct "habital zone" of a white dwarf. The problem with white dwarfs, is they give off a massive amount of radiation.

fun fact, due to the astronomically bizarre way our universe works (pun intended) the planets would still continue to orbited the spot the sun was at due to gravity (gravity waves specifically) only moving at the speed of light, meaning they would effectively be orbiting a phantom star of sorts. now i am in no means a credited source on this so take what i say with a grain of salt and check it out for yourselves, but science is so much weirder and cooler the fiction

The reason for the switch to getting cooler has to do with the ratio between luminosity and the surface area of the star to the energy content and volume of energy density. Since energy density is perportional to the radius cubed and luminosity is perportional to the radius squared, when the ratio between the two in natural units is perportional to 1 they are equal. Above 1, the perportion of something cubed becomes larger than something squared. But, below 1, the perportion squared is larger. So luminosity can only increase so far before it starts to lose its influence til eventually becoming negligible.

To explain the sudden increase in tempature its because all the fusion power ran put, so the core began to colapse, in doing so it created more fusion, this time with heavier elements releasing more energy. Eventually the sun will just kinda disipate. This is actually how the sun will die irl.
