Clem Smith's iconic Charger is the Sports Sedan that many wish they had of seen racing more in Australia.
The car, featuring a 358ci Dodge V8 at its' heart, is one of the most iconic Sports Sedans of the 80s and has been returned to how it raced during that era. It returned to the track at Historic Mallala and Blend Line TV was there to chat to driver Jason Maros about the car, currently owned by Simon Pfitzner.

How good is it to see this car returned to the track. An absolutely stunning tribute to the legacy of Clem Smith. Who'd love to have a drive? We know we would!

I’d definitely have a go being a Mopar guy. I can’t help but wonder if your title is wrong though? The 340 V8 is an LA engine! Not a Hemi.

Another car that has had a few evolutions. The car was built from a brand new VK shell. With originally alloy door skins, bonnet, boot stamped by Chrysler. As did McCormacks Charger as well. Develco suspension, 355 Chrysler Nascar block with iron W2s. NOT hemi! And the big DG400 Hewland in the back. VH front panel treatment as Clem liked the VH. VK tail treatment. I saw this car being built and maintained and modified over the years. It became a GT car then sat for some period before being converted back to a Sports Sedan. And it joined the scenery at Mallala a couple of times. Then was repaired and the panels replaced became kevlar. Another car I raced against in the 80s and 90s until Clem quit racing it as he got older. Last decade or so of Clems life it was the pacecar for the Clem Smith cup at Mallala so got its yearly birthday in the weeks before. In the workshop at the South Rd caryard. So was in mobile condition when Simon bought the car. An auction that I deliberatly missed or I may have spent money!! I was at the viewing day for the auction of the entire fleet and son Brenton said it was like a Saturday in the car yard!!

That's a niiice motorcar. I had a 360 Chrysler by Chrysler for a short while. That was a strong motor. This would be a beast of a thing.

That's awesome. Yeah, we're sure there is a lot more left in the car for how hard it's driven. But Historic Sports Sedans is about keeping the cars on track so we can understand not wringing it's neck in these days!

@@BlendLineTV Absolutely. Rarities like these should be treated with respect and love but also be allowed to stretch their legs a little. Nice to see it being driven on a track, no matter how gently.

I went to Mallala with my dad in the early 80s when it reopened and this ripper was racing that day. from memory nothing much touched it for brute speed down the back straight.

@@BlendLineTV Sweet!!! I really enjoyed the 20b turbo FD Super Sedan video. That's some serious grassroots racing right there. I have a rotary powered EXOCET kit car & NA gen MX-5 I run at local time attacks & track days here on the east coast of the US. Would love to put something like that together. Would also love to see what those guys could/would do with my 85' Corolla GT-S coupe (AE86 or AE88 if fanboys wanna get technical lol). Keep up the good work 👍
