@@lorddarlo6194 Murrays new T50 has more power 654bhp out of a smaller capacity, lighter V12 engine (the T50 is 4ltr vs F1s 6.1ltr) It's a Cosworth designed and built engine like the Valkyrie.

@@XmarkedSpot Agreed, also in my experience the German tendency to over-engineer sometimes trumps quality and common sense, resulting in lower reliability rather than the target of greater reliability. Not that I hate the product, I have 2 BMW bikes in the stable currently, a modern 650 single and a 1969 R60. The R60 is just a comfortable and competent today as it was back in the 60s.

My personal grief on the job stems from over-engineering by committee: never ending and flip-flopping amendments to building codes. Once in in a blue moon there's a sensible one, sure, but most of them are seemingly bred by clueless political busybodies driving by sight in the best of cases... Okay okay, rant is over! @@XmarkedSpot Russian manufacturing is such an odd beast. I'm most familiar with Ural since I'm sort of a motorcycle freak. Their product is rough and up until about 10 years ago I wasn't at all impressed with their reliability, but upgrades to the factory over the past decade have increased reliability (but they're still ugly bikes IMO!). Strangely enough their lack of finesse in Earth-bound vehicles doesn't seem to be a problem when they strap a rocket to it and shoot it into space. Of course, current events could essentially regress their engineering capabilities back to the stone age. And building codes and those who write them...ugh. We built our own house 15 years ago and I still have nightmare flashbacks to the idiotic hoops we were required to jump through which had nothing to do with structural safety or longevity and everything to do with someone, somewhere, creating political drama so they could justify their employment. I can't imagine dealing with that mess on a daily basis at work. My sympathies!

As for the ongoing conflict, it's - it's a catastrophe eclipsing mere warfare, it's the destruction of the foundational European geopolitical structure and security architecture... i honestly can't even. Let's try contemplating the anticipated stagnation/ regress of Russian tech, if only in spite of it all. I'd argue that it won't compare to the total collapse that had happened after '91. Development essentially halted on all frontiers to a standstill and way into the mid '00s at that. (I happen to have second hand knowledge about certain kinds of military research that went on in the USSR at that time, suffice to say that they were confident in being on par with of even having an edge on the US tech-wise. It's a long and more importantly an already outdated story, so maybe another time ;) The arguably biggest concern they must face in the near future is a total lack of domestic state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication. China can't really help with that either - TSMC is in Taiwan, after all and ASML certainly won't provide newer tech even if they managed to capture the facilities intact... so, yay? As far as I remember, the problem was that most tests were done with the comfort, while the pre-production Sports had the short gearing aimed at racing, while the actual production models got longer gearing on fourth and fifth to increase top speed. The F40's did reach 201 mph once...in the hands of ferrari engineers on their own test track (let's agree that they fiddled like how SSC fiddled with stuff too for their own record attempt).

the only dodge daytona's that actually managed to go over 200 mph where the race-prepped cars, NOT the production vehicles. Those were actually much slower, still quite fast for their age and especially their weight, but not the 200 mph scorchers that were on the racetrack.

Actually Bruce's right-hand man, an American named Teddy Mayer, took over running the company until its merger with/takeover by Dennis' Project Four outfit in 1981. Dennis DID subsequently found the separate subsidiary McLaren Cars (which was renamed McLaren Automotive in 2010) in 1985 that ultimately developed and produced the F1.

They're paper values. People buy and sell stocks and bonds because they are liquid assets, with classic cars and other illiquid assets (e.g. fine art) you don't know when is the right time to sell, and what's the true value for what is essentially an emotional purchase. And if you sell the cars, what do you buy next? A Model S Plaid?

Anyways, if you look at the market it is quite contrived nowadays with limited editions. But in the 1980s it wasn't quite like it is now, although fancy cars, e.g. Rolls Royce, had been around for a while, sports 'hypercars' were a new thing. It didn't really work out for Lamboghini, their cars had no racing pedigree. The Bugatti effort didn't work out and neither did that Jaguar thing. Ferrari existed but were very rare, you didn't have youtubers with Ferraris, you might see one if you were lucky once in a blue moon and know little about the brand. A contemporary could be the original Tesla Roadster. They are far from impressive in the flesh and more trouble than they are worth. The guys with garages full of Ferraris don't have one. But there is one in space, millions of miles away, plus the company that built them is now the most valuable in the industry. It is the only Tesla that has real investment value and has historical significance that the special edition Ferraris, Lambos, Porsches and even things like Koenigseg do not. I don't think liquidity is that big a deal. Or emotion. It is all about the irrational market and speculation. Right now we have a lot of people who see cars as a valid speculative asset, this is like how antiques used to be. But then the rug got pulled from antiques and nobody wanted them any more, except for the people that appreciated the underlying appeal of old stuff. Cars are like that but there isn't going to be a rug pull moment that finishes the speculative investment aspect off for good.

yes and no. The Diablo was iconic in its own right, but wasn't counted among the so-called "super cars" as it wasn't considered a halo car for its brand. It wasn't like Lamborghini had suddenly built a model above their usual powerhouse (like what ferrari and porsche did). However, to be fair, the diablo did match the mentioned supercars blow for blow and was an honest and much cheaper 200 mph+ supercar available in the same timeframe.

But the Veyron used 16 turbochargers and over half a mile/Quarter Mile the McLaren F1 a true pinnacle of engineering could beat it. The Veyron is still an impressive feat of engineering but 11 years later with 16 turbos it goes 13MPH Faster

The V6 replacing the V12 for emmission/engineering reasons did not help but the killer was the early 1990's recession with the X220 being launch in the eye of that storm. The Mclaren F1 suffered similarly, selling only 70 out of a projected 300, the Jag sold about 200 out of a projected 350. To see this car in a museum or showroom is quite something, but to see it out on the road, on the move, it is undeniably fantastic to view.

tbf, ferrari I could understand, but lamborghini didn't even attempt to try going into this dumb craze of the late eighties early ninetees, they didn't have the money to do so and by the time they did, their regular halo car already eclipsed those supercars from the supercar wars (IE the diablo). Ferrari mainly attacked Bugati (still dirty stuff by ferrari as usual). Jaguar simply was hit by a combination of not being the most profitable company at that point, a recession which hit it right in the wallet due to loss of customers and the fact that the V12 didn't get through US emissions regulations. (its why there also weren't any daimler double six of the last X300 in the US either)

but nowhere near the figures though...except maybe the viper in terms of sheer OOMPH, because the viper did have the power (not the speed) and though the corvette was finally becoming more of a sportscar and less of a brawny dragster...it is and will always be labeled as a sportscar rather than a supercar due to the fact that its a bit like the Porsche 911: the base model is never playing in the same league as the actual supercars, even though it's top trims are)

I always wonder why people say the VW part about the 911...I mean I can understand the 356, but the 911 nah, didn't even retain much of the 356 except the engine in the form of the 912 (which was actually better to drive according to contemporary magazines...especially in the part where the tail tries to kick out as you mentioned xD )

I believe a Tuning company did put a V12 Into an XJ220 and then fitted more body modifications. Jag really should have fitted the V12 to the XJ220 to really make it a joint legend with the F1.
