I am new to the surfskate and I have watched tutorials and I thought watching was all it would take. Your comment about practice until you get it right was reassuring, for speed generation. It didn't come as easy as I imagined. I'm working on it and I hope I'm not the only one who didn't get it right away lol

It definitely takes time, so don't worry! The more time you can spend in the water the better practicing these skills is best.

Ace video! Thank you. In terms of using an actual skateboard as s basic surfskate, I'd add (as a 25 year skateboarder, recent surfing convert) that it is possible, but I'd look into an old school shaped board (wide with little nose) and use wide trucks that turn well, such as indies or ace (the best at the time of writing). I'd also say that soft wheels (such as OJ superjuice or Santa Cruz slimeballs) and riser pads are a must. Wheel bite (when you turn too far and the board makes contact with the wheel) is not a pleasant slam on concrete! If you add up the costs of all of these things from new, it's probably close to a basic surfskate set up. I was lucky to have most of them knocking around in my garage. I've used some of these techniques with a modified skateboard setup and was surprised with how different it felt to a normal skateboard set up. Managed to generate speed with wheels kept on the ground and got a good workout in the process. Keen to get on some waves now. That said, I'm still looking at investing in a dedicated surfskate at some point though!

Hi mate, I followed you from how to rip and now both a fan of you and kale. One thing I noticed this video did a lot better than before was it packed with lots of knowledge point in one. Before I was watching how to rip and after 10 minute I probably only get one thing. Whereas this one, I almost get all I needed to practise on surf skateboard with same time. Great work! subscribed and looking forward the next one!

Great video. Watching your postures and commentary helps me visualise and practice. I am 59. Done wakeboarding (50 years old), wake skating (52) quite seriously. Singapore has no waves - so no surfing. Did windsurfing (29 years old) at basic level. Keen cyclist, mediocre rollerblader (can not stop well). invested in Longboarding (Loaded) e-long-boarding, e-skateboarding, Leifetch e-summerboard (6-wheels), Onewheel. Ripstick. The surf skate nails it! Spent US$110 on a Decathlon Oxelo 540 that gives 92% of the efficiency of a Carver. Switched the trucks to CX7. (great). Switched the back to UL2272 certified E-power. Now can focus on form and beauty!

Sounds great Ignatius, you have the right idea with visualising when you are on your skate. Maybe there are some wave pools you can surf in in Singapore?

Thanks for the feedback Andy, stoked to hear you like them. This is a carve board, I've had it for a long time. They are very different, because this one doesn't allow you to lift the nose of the board up...I don't support or recommend any brand, but would suggest that you do your own research and see if you can try out as many as possible to find out what you like.

Which brand is better for someone who is struggling? Carver or Smooth Star? I hurt my back, so I am off the water for a while. I guess I have to start again from scratch when I have healed.

Slide brand then Carver brand are at the ‘milder’ end of the range of surfskate boards in terms of looseness/‘radical-ness’. (The Slide range have a relatively nice low deck too, for slightly lower centre of gravity.) As we go towards the other end of the scale, WaterBorne, SmoothStar and YOW get looser and looser. Being older, I reckon my Slide 33” surfskate nails it as a trainer for me, and fun on its own.
@pokeypickle3
@pokeypickle3 3 жыл бұрын
@@markrichards3947 Thank you. Your answer is very helpful. I normally ride a Fish (with lots of volume) but I am saving to buy a long mal as I am not a good surfer. (I am also 50, I use to be better 4 to 5 years ago until various injuries kept me out of the water.) As I am not looking to do many 'tricks' in the water, I think I do not need a radical surf skateboard. I want to enjoy doing simple speed pumps and simple turns. So I think I should look for a 'milder' board to do 'simple' stuff. I have not rode a skate board since the late 1980s.

@@pokeypickle3 Hearing more of your details, I think you’ll find a Slide surfskate perfect. At 5’10” tall (85kg) and 55 years old on a 33-inch board, I am really enjoying being able to maintain exercise (your quads will hurt!), and translate forehand and backhand body movements (CROUCH!; rotation) back into surfing skills. And surfskating has enough ‘glide’ in the experience to be fun on its own. Even if it’s not the ‘full stoke’ of ocean board riding, it’s repeatable and reliable. ✅ A further tip; I’ve found that using markers (witches hats) that you have to AIM a path around, placed to emulate bottom-turn, down-the-line pumping, top-turn, cutbacks; really makes you train your timing to synchronise your body’s compression/extension/twist/head movements. Rather than simply skating around. Personally, I tightened the surfskate proprietary front truck and the conventional rear truck initially as I thought I needed a bit more stability in a skatepark. But then I realised pumping and turning on smooth almost flat ground (netball courts with a lot of width/space) with the above markers, was really the most effective use as a training mechanism for actual surfing. All a matter of personal taste I’m sure.

Why is it that I have a phobia of falling onto concrete? Hence my reluctance to surf skate. I nearly got hit by a car when I was skate boarding as a teenager. (That was over 34 years ago.) Is my phobia unjustified?
@TheSurfersJourney
@TheSurfersJourney 3 жыл бұрын
If you can find an empty car park, then you reduce the risk significantly. Also consider a helmet, knee pads, etc...to keep yourself as safe as possible in case you do hit the concrete!

@@TheSurfersJourney netball courts are generally smoother - love it. Carparks still have debris etc thrown up by cars. I have a choice of two great netball courts. I have my multi-protector pack and a helmet. I did fall and hurt my wrist badly but without my wrist guard, it have been a broken bone. Now I need to rest my wrist before I can pop up on a surfboard. 😢 At least I can still surf skateboard while my back and wrist is healing.
