Hello! I was actually a part of the Charlie Rosen sightreading panel and was the first alto sax soloist for Bob-omb Battlefield! This was my first MAGfest and while I had such a blast and have gained a ton of inspiration, I also felt the same way as you described at the end with the imposter syndrome. I thought I was a decently good sax player, but wow do I feel out of my league. But I now have a new dream and goal to someday play mainstage with a cool new project I'm starting up! I've been greatly inspired to get better, and your vlog helped me reassure my feelings as well as give me insight on the kind of things I eventually want to be able to be doing! Keep up the awesome work and content Frankie!

Fantastic! Killing it on the guest spot. You broke down that chart like a seasoned pro. Doing work ahead of time so you can be in the moment during the gig. The kind of musician everyone wants to play with. And a really great job of documenting your processes. Thanks for making the video!

Man, everything you said at the end of the video was exactly how I felt after MAGFest. The fact that I had the likes of Dave Pollack for example complimenting my playing is something I could have never in a million years imagined happening, and it truly did mean a lot to me, but I still had that same feeling of impostor syndrome. It definitely sucks having those lingering thoughts overshadow the whole event for me, but regardless, I'm still more than grateful to have had the opportunity to play alongside you and the others, and hopefully I can come back even stronger for VGMCon!

I feel you man, imposter syndrome can be rough. I find it kinda liberating that many great players seem really humble and still search for weak points in their playing to get even better. It feels like one big road towards perfection (spoiler: noone ever gets there) and we're all just at different points of our journey. You probably heard it all before lol anyways, I always appreciate your genuine approach!

I guess the most difficult part of the whole video I just watched here is the video editing! I mean, you're a great musician and a great person. The life of a musician like yours flows as you were so great in telling the story. Aside that, again, the most challenging part is to make a great video like this one, capable to tell the story as it is. You (or whoever helped you in video editing) did a great job, because highlighted the true part of the big effort you do every day to make these events even more special. You did so great and I can see the passion and dedication in all you do. Keep it up, I have so much esteem and respect for you. Thanks to make this happen! 🙂🎹🎼💙 AL

It's that bit of not feeling good enough that means you are good enough! In my experience as a musician, it's the musicians who keep reminding themselves that they have to work at things and who are constantly moving towards their next musical adventure who are the best to work with. It's all to easy to fall into the 'yeah I'm great' mindset then find the world overtakes you. Feeling we need to improve and work at things is what keeps good musicians good...

Thanks for sharing about the “emotional hangover” that can happen after a superlative experience playing music with other people. It’s something I regularly experience, and, as a result, it’s inspired me to continue to add tools to my emotional toolkit - trying different stuff to see what works - so that the impostor syndrome doesn’t get its talons in quite so deep in between the opportunities for playing music which are so very fun and rewarding. I appreciated your transparency about it, even though it felt vulnerable to share in that way. I love watching your videos because it makes me happy to see another creative person living large in the ways you do. I’m not glad that you experience the energetic/emotional dips as well (I do tooooo), but it is comforting to recognize that it’s probably pretty common for creatives to feel that way. As one of my friends says about creative comparison: “there’s always a bigger fish”. There’ll always be room for any creative person to grow, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t also already great. My best to you in all of your continued creativity - *both* as a musician and as a content creator. It’s so engaging to be able to watch you do both of those things with such dedication, skill and playfulness.

Hey Frankie, I'm not a musician but I think I've experienced the same things you were talking about at the end of the video. Totally with you on the melancholy that can sometimes come from being surrounded by inspiring people that we feel like we don't measure up to. It is really a lot of pressure that we end up putting on ourselves. But I don't think we should be placing a responsibility on ourselves to achieve what other people do as a "price of entry". When we do that, I think we fundamentally confuse the order that things arrive to create such vibrant communities where excellence is on display. Excellence didn't create the community, the community created the excellence. Without the open-handed encouragement and support that artists give to each other, many of those amazing performers would have quit years ago. I think a lot of us need to learn how to receive that encouragement. Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing what you have coming this year.

You are doing great. Find the things you do best naturally. Make them stronger. Write your own "licks" down and learn them until you are on automatic pilot with your own voice built on the things that are natural to you. I think you're worthy because you are playing with them and being invited to these gigs. You're hangin up there with them, playin and networking etc. Sure you are a content creator (a great one at that), but you are also a musician (also a great one). Your journey in music in the grand scheme of things is still young, so even if you feel these insecurities now, you have plenty of time to work things out. This is gonna sound like a broken record but you are your biggest critic so meeting expectations will always be challenging. At least it is for me. Also, after hearing you play I was thinking to myself, "Damn how can I get my horn to sound like that?!". In any case, you're doing great man! Keep it up. GL HF! :)

I can relate to the impostor syndrome. I have been going to Mag for 11 years, and a bunch of my friends and band mates have played on various stages. I was fortunate enough to be able to play one of the stages in 2021. But when I see the caliber of musician performing there, I don't see how I possibly could measure up, even though I know that people respect me as a musician. I just need to remember that every time I play with musicians who are more skilled than me, it is an opportunity to learn and improve.

A good friend is a pro music teacher and, even now after many years, is certain somebody will 'unmask' her, even though she has 80% Merit pass and above, and taken some pupils all the way from Beginner to Diploma. There are only a few people who are totally confident in their skill set, us mere mortals will alway have doubts, even when told how good we are. If you couldn't cut it, they wouldn't have asked you....

l can relate to that because im a freshmen replacing our old tenor player that just graduated & i played with him for pep band literately an hour ago, & its weird because you want to compare yourself but all you can do is say you will. because it is possible. & as musicians we tend to beat ourselves up about it a lot & don't take the time to see our growth. if you look back compared to high school your practically a god. i mean you can pull songs just by ear & play them perfectly. im not saying to be like "its good enough" because we can always get better but dont hate on yourself. thats the worst thing you can do. my choir teacher says that "you are your worst critic" nobody can tear you down as much as you. & being a content creator is good because it shows people a path that they don't get to see every day. before i shared your channel with my friends nobody even knew that you giging was a real option that you could continue after high school. i love you man take it easy.

It's weird how our brains can make us feel like we've got everything figured out and we're the top of the world, but the next moment go all imposter syndrome on us and result in a sense of being utterly lost in the ocean.. I can say, though, I feel like your chosen direction is a great one! It really feels like there's no right or wrong in this age, KZfaq might not pay the bills (thank you broken copyright system) but Patreon perhaps could, and the people you meet on here and interact with, might (and I believe will) make the experience much more enjoyable. I sometimes wish I hadn't chosen the career path I did (decided not to pursue a music career in my teens and went into the corporate hellscape) but these kind of thoughts don't really help the current me. I didn't pursue music so here I am. It turned into a mind vomit but yea I hope I could explain my perspective a little.

It’s a normal human trait for musicians to question themselves after an important gig and also feel a bit down just cause you were so up for the gig, its a kind of a balancing of the ups and downs that athletes, actors, musicians go thru🎵 I find though if I’m gigging 4 to 5 nights or even 6 like I did in Branson, the previous feelings are replaced by another human trait: bitching about working too much. We’re never satisfied🤣

I can tell you this even if you're not one of the greats. You're still a great player. End even though I don't really know what I'm talking about with saxophone players. Because I am only playing trumpet. So some people on here who actually have knowledge about saxophone. They might see it and see that. You have a lot more mistakes that you make than I do. But I don't see them because I don't know everything. There is to know about saxophone. I know just about nothing about it so. But from what I can hear in your videos. You have a lot of talent and a lot of skill so I think in my opinion, you are one of the greats even if you're not known as one of the greats to everybody else

Cause you're able to take saxophone flute. And trumpet and play them meanwhile, I may have any knowledge of truly playing trumpet. But the fact you can at least play them all now, of course, some of them you're probably going to be Better on. That's just how it's going to be. With musicians, we all have some main that we play Better than anything else. You can still play all three, which is mind blowing to me

Dye your hair, get the tattoo, get your freak on, go full on Zappa or John Zorn. Just don't wear pajamas on stage like Adam Neely. JK, I love that dude!

Is the tenor player on a purple logo Yamaha or a 480? It looks to be way too shiny to be a purple logo. Lol.

I really resonate with the ending , but I remember even the best say "you can never master the horn." It was never about the horn or the skill Frankie, what you bring to the table is YOU. When you sit in with bands all of a sudden you need to be a fundamentalist, lose your personality to focus on things like "is this short or tenuto" to fit in, but your STRENGTH is your nonconformity (you're also very very strong at conformity doe...) GO OFF Frankie and START YOUR OWN BAND someday????? Kick ass son

LOL to be fair Anton knows the song and has played it, he likely just couldn’t immediately remember it without a refresher since he hadn’t played it in a long time.
