Good swale. I'm impressed that they were able to get the level work. I tried a level similar to yours (as well as a bunyip level) and failed miserably. It took too long to set my points. I was working at a large scale (ultimately dug 6,000 feet of swale and berm) so I had to resort to a laser level. But kudos to you for making it work!
@lulusperch1742
@lulusperch1742 6 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine using an A-frame or bunyip level over 6000ft. You definitely made the right decision to use a laser level! Did you film the process by any chance?
@GoldShawFarm
@GoldShawFarm 6 жыл бұрын
I did. I made a video that shows what the orchard and swales/berms look like today. I'm working on another video now (that should be done next week) that shows the process from measuring to digging to planting.

What is the plumb line device you are using to find the contour?
@lulusperch1742
@lulusperch1742 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kyle! Great question. It's an A-Frame with a string and plumb bob. When the A-Frame is level I mark it on the timber so when I head out into the landscape I can use it to find the contour. I go into more detail in my swale watching episode!

We can actually harvest too much?
@lulusperch1742
@lulusperch1742 6 жыл бұрын
relevent Hurt` correct! Too many swales too close together can actually water log your property. Meaning that the soil is so saturated over a significant period of time that it can't receive oxygen, locks up nutrients and becomes anaerobic like a stinky slushy swamp. This can be avoided by planting trees on the berm and below the swale. It's important to check your annual rainfall before digging! In some extremely wet areas in Europe they install swivel pipes in their swales to release water in heavy rain months and close them for lighter rain events in dry periods :)

How would you create a swale on a 1:2/26.6 slope? Could one use a tractor or bulldozer? I have 15 hectare sloped hill I wish to swale.
@lulusperch1742
@lulusperch1742 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! My suggestion is don't dig down but build upwards. By that I mean placing rock gabions, fallen logs and sticks along the contour. Reinforce this with deep rooted clumping grasses like vetiver too
@thecontonemethod1582

@@lulusperch1742 Cool man, thanks. Since I messaged you an idea came to mind: using a walking two-wheeled tractor plough; one could deflate the hillside tyre to help to dig into the slope and the mouldboard of the plough would fold the sod over downhill to create the berm. 2-3 runs, to create a square foot swale. What you reckon?!
@lulusperch1742
@lulusperch1742 2 жыл бұрын
@@thecontonemethod1582 If you've got a machine with a low center of gravity on a steep slope I say give it a try. Although a swale and berm may be redundant on a 1:2 slope, you may only need to rip on contour with a Yeomans plough. Have a look into PA Yeoman, he would rip ploughlines from valleys slightly off contour down to the ridges.
@lulusperch1742
@lulusperch1742 Жыл бұрын
@@thecontonemethod1582 Sounds like a clever idea! getting the sod cut, folded upside down and placed on the downhill berm with a gentle batter leading up to it would be a tricky yet achievable invention!
