One thing I love about this series is how accessible it is to new readers while not just regurgitating established lore. And despite the Suicide Squad and Hal Jordan/Green Lantern corps series showing up its a good series to get someone new into the DC universe. (Hell sometimes when I read it I forgot it was canon). But I definitely agree with what you said in the video. Ram V and Perkins really took what Alan Moore did his iconic run and did their own spin on it. It had a lot of similar beats but in no way does it just do the Moore run again, it evolves. Great video Doug

It's absolutely spectacular. Everybody on this team's firing on all cylinders and you can really see it. It's maybe the closes I've seen DC come to the vibe of the old Vertigo books, which Ram actually cited as a huge inspiration.

Thanks, glad you liked it! I'd definitely say there's a lot of commentary on the Moore run in here, but even beyond that Ram does a great job of drawing from every iteration of the character to tell something entirely new. It's so packed full of history it's got me really wanting to dive deeper and learn more about the character.

While I really wish Ram gets more Swamp Thing stories in the future, I actually really like this the way it is. It's got a very balanced focus, and acts as a great primer for The Swamp Thing while hinting at the grander history for the character. I definitely wanted to know more after I finished this.

***SPOILERS for Ram V and Charles Soule's run*** I think it's hard to argue that Swamp Thing in the new 52 "Lost its way" after Zack Snyder's Run when the one that immediately followed it written by Charles Soule, was pretty much copy and pasted verbatim with the latter half of Ram V's Swamp Thing run. Especially weird how people compare this run to Alan Moore's, when Soule's is the run it is most similar to. From issue 8 onwards there was the whole "contention and then upheaval" of the mantle of avatar, but instead of it going to Woodrue like it did in Soule's run, it went to Jacob. Even the Parliamant made the decision just like it did in Soule's run, minus the official battle. And also, instead of the "big bad new parliament" being the Rithm and Lady Weeds, it's instead The Metal and The Pale Wanderer (and even the fact it's X-avatars in a new parliament!!). Levi Kamei is a more interesting character than New52 Alec Holland, I'll give it that, but the latter half of the run is too derivative for me to feel it's worth of praise on its own when the run it was mostly inspired from happened less than 10 years ago. Even the ending was similar with both The Metal and The Rithm ending in a neutered state rather than total annihilation But great video! It's a neat summary of the run and I'm always happy to see Swamp Thing content

A little off topic, but I didn't know Grant Morrison worked on Swamp Thing at one point until you listed their name among the many creators that followed in Moore's wake. At the same time though, I'm not surprised to hear their name either. Is there any series Alan Moore wrote for DC that Morrison didn't also write for afterward? It feels like every time Moore wrote something, Morrison felt the need to write a response to it. Even Moore's own original story in Watchmen, Morrison wrote Pax Americana in response.
@zemox2534

Well Alan didn't write the X men
@ForEveryKindofGeek
@ForEveryKindofGeek Жыл бұрын
I really liked that dynamic they had, it's interesting because both of them clearly had the same general outlook but went about it in totally different ways. Morrison believes we can transcend our problems through aspirational thinking, Moore believes we need to confront the ugly truths we live with, but they both believe that stories have a magical, world-shaping power. It's cool to see them continue this "conversation" through their works.
@cicolasnage5684
@cicolasnage5684 Жыл бұрын
That’s a wonky theory, being that Morrison only wrote a 4 issue arc with mark miller in 94. It wasn’t like it was some profound work, it was just filler stuff before the next big thing. And I wouldn’t call Pax Americana a response it was more like what if Alan Moore had been able to use the charlton characters as he intended to. What other of Morrisons work are you referring to as follow up to Moore’s?

OK. I think having different parliaments is just as dumb as having different lantern core. Doesn't help that the other parliament are rarely explores unlike the green. Was is the point? The Swamp Thing franchise didn't need anymore existential forces other than the Green. No offense dude. This was a fun video and the art looked great
@ForEveryKindofGeek
@ForEveryKindofGeek Жыл бұрын
I'd have to disagree. I think the parliaments are an interesting way of interpreting the forces that drive life, especially modern life. Ram's parliament of gears is a great way of looking at how we've grown so dependent on technology that it's out-evolved us. That said, I don't think every writer hits that same balance.
