I build and test 3 different kinds of Swedish Torches. You'll be amazed how differently they perform. Which one is best for you?

During the COVID pandemic with travel restrictions and multiple lockdowns, we constructed a small fire pit in our attached carport for our young troops to practice firemaking and camp cooking. No worry, it has a very high ceiling and is all masonry & cement. The pit was out near the front gate so excess smoke was no issue. There was some wonderful family time "camping out" and teaching our brood. We did not try a Swedish torch mainly due to not finding any log large enough in our subdivision. Thank you for the reminder, we have to put this one back on the list as we search for a proper log. We especially appreciate your comparison test of the different construction styles. Watching you from our "secret retirement" location in Bulacan province, on Luzon island in the Republic of the Philippine islands.

Great video CamGuerilla! We really appreciate the clear and comprehensive guide on how to make a Swedish Torch. The version of the fire made with the auger seems to be the best, it seems long lasting and easy to manage. Your tips and tricks on using the auger made the process even more efficient. Your video has been featured on the Hand Auger page on Waivio and it will serve as a valuable resource for others looking to make a Swedish Torch. Keep up the good work!

The middle log with you bored out will work much better if you add two more holes. In order to get a rocket effect you need airflow. First try it with two holes on the side then make one with three holes on the side. The more air the hotter the flame.

The one with the hold 2 holes would work great for camping , long lasting lighg!!! The split log would be good for fast cooking! The wire one would be great for heat!!! All three were excellent 👌

Just cut less slices with the chain saw. I like the bore hole method for cooking. I've done the rock nail or screw method to elevate pan/pot but my favorite way is I you one of those gas stove burn grates. Cheap to buy and you can always find them at flea market etc and at garbage dump sites.

Looks like the bore hole 🕳 is the winner for cooking 🍳 if you have a way of holding the pan or pot off the surface so the heat 🔥 spreads evenly underneath and doesn't snuff the fire. Maby two pieces of strapping slotted to fit each other in a standing position like an X. Sort of like a rocket stove made of the fuel ⛽. Excellent display of Intel sweetheart!!! Thanks for the video!!!

Awesome the star one looks the coolest. I like the bored for its simplicity. Did one put out more heat than the other? Did the outside of the log radiate some heat?
@CamGuerilla
@CamGuerilla 3 жыл бұрын
The split and star ones put out a nice amount of heat. The bored one is more for decore. The outside of the log radiates negligible heat.

I’m going to attempt this this summer. I thought the two holes would work better as well. Have you tried testing the vent holes being opposite each other and at 90 degrees to see which works better?
@CamGuerilla
@CamGuerilla 2 жыл бұрын
I've only done the 90 degree version. Although logically, the 180 degree version should be better.

Is it possible, I wonder, to make a hybrid Swedish rocket torch with 2 airholes using only simple tools, i.e. an axe and saw? 1. Split log into four; 2. carve notches in the lower part of the split logs. 3. Assemble with wire. I must try this some time!

Does it work on freshly cut Trees? Does it matter wether it's conifer/Pine or deciduous Wood?
@CamGuerilla
@CamGuerilla 2 жыл бұрын
Freshly cut trees are usually not dry enough to burn. Just like when you're cutting regualr firewood, it needs to dry out first. Different woods burn better or worse than others. For instance, poplar is deciduous but burns poorly whereas apple is deciduous and burns well. But in general, I'd stick with conifers because they generally burn well. And for the drill method, many deciduous woods would be harder to drill.

great video really appreciate it what I got was a 18-in long Milwaukee drill bit made for lineman drill so I got a Makita lineman drill they only had a 1 inch bit but hey I don't know I wish I had a one and a half like yours but lineman's drills a hammer drill so you don't have to worry about twisting your wrist or nothing... it's loud but it works fast it just goes right through that log like nothing and I'm talking to oak not pine or poplar... anyway thank you look up a I'll try to come back to this and get you a link but "advoko makes" a d v o k o makes it's a Russian kid Russian guy a lawyer look at his sweetest Swedish torch... he does vertical cooking in them you know. you can use log dogs he makes his own log dogs log dogs take three logs hook them together with log dogs and then he uses that as a rack to hang cooking meat and his spirals a glpotato and wraps it around a hot dog or something like that sausage Cooks it and then all the meat drips on to the potato really works well okay I got to go it's too late to be doing this good night

The split one and chainsaw one are the hottest and burn the quickets. I like to use the drilled ones as more of an accent light for evening events. Make a bunch of them and use them like you would normally use tiki torches.

Next time, drill the holes first and then split the log
@CamGuerilla
@CamGuerilla Жыл бұрын
hmmm, interesting thought. Why would you want one that is both drilled and split? Splitting a drilled one would negate the point of drilling the holes and effectively make it the same as a plain split one.
