The SIG 310, aka MP48, is the final evolution of SIG's submachine gun design from the 1920s. It began as the MKM/P/S/O with a folding magazine well, wooden stock, and fancy lever-delayed operating system. Over almost 30 years of development, the wood stock and the lever-delayed system fell away, as did the really high quality finishing work. The folding magazine well and the magazine itself remained intact, however.
This final version is a very simple blowback mechanism with a similarly simple collapsing wire stock. It uses a 40-round double-feed magazine of 9x19mm ammunition, and fires at a zippy 1000 rpm. I was surprised by just how easily controllable it was despite the high rate of fire and short receiver - and also by the harmonic ringing of the wire stock when firing. While this may be an embarrassingly crude gun for the Swiss, it is a gun that most other countries would be quite proud of.

Yeah I guess, thinking about it it makes sense because the bolt throw is so short. With a bolt throw so short having a resonable rate of fire becomes a real problem, same reason full auto pistols like Glock 18 have a ridiculous rpm, since the bolt has such a short travel the rpm will be high. Making it a full auto only SMG with a 500:ish rpm would require serious redesign instead of just cutting away luxuries.

Dentistguba The point of a submachine gun on full auto is to make 1 or 2 people very dead, very quickly. This is especially the case with ones with higher fire rates. For everything else, you use semi auto or really short bursts

Or the MAT-49. Be interesting to see a direct comparison between this and the MAT, similar guns designed for a similar period. The French gun got to see 30 plus years of hard combat whereas the Swiss weapon thankfully never had to prove itself but I wonder if it would not have gained a similar reputation as a gun to bet your life on.

It does, sadly there was a shitload of accidents with those things as they had the habit of blasting off on full auto when dropped or banged on something which led to the army abandoning them. For a neutral country the Swiss sure do love their military arms.
@liquidminds
@liquidminds 6 жыл бұрын
The Swiss have some of the highest rates of private gun-owners in europe, since they have mandatory military service and get to keep their gun after that, for defensive purposes. They just recently changed it so that they don't get ammo with it anymore, because suicide-rates were just too high. Switzerland is also the only country that can be entirely locked down. Every entrance into the country can be blocked with steel-barriers and the mountains are full of hidden bunkers, even for jet-hangars sometimes. "neutral" only means they won't take sides in other countries fighting each other. It does not mean that they are not willing do defend. If you attack Switzerland, you got to expect every single swiss citizen to fight you.

more accurately... part of the reason they were able to remain neutral at all were said arms in the first place (among others), having guns and well trained men able to use them tend to be more effective at convincing others to leave you alone than most things.

What makes the gun recoil so mildly? It looks relatively light, it has high fire rate, short bolt travel and the barrel aligns above the stock so you could think that the recoil would be quite harsh. But instead it seems to be very controllable in full auto, almost like the way the KP-31 is, which has the advantage of heavy weight to absorb the recoil.

Ian, I love the way that the sound of the gun is attenuated in that firing range, it makes it sound awesome. This gets me thinking... many people have designed and manufactured devices to suppress the sound of a weapon firing but has anyone actually made an attenuator to make something like a sub-machine gun sound more like a medium or heavy machine gun.

If you're looking around for a BB pistol I would recommend this one kzfaq.infoUgkxnX9wE_Q8zvF75Y5iWzTU3Q4FlrtyGApQ . I ordered two BB pistols from Dan Wesson and this one is so much nicer than the other one. It's a well built gun. Can't say that about the other one. I thought the Mag was pretty easy to load. I also just lock the spring back and fill up the hole with 16 BB's with no sweat. Easily remove the rear part of the handle from the bottom with the Mag removed to access the CO2 chamber. Sweet. Very nice painted sights on both ends. Doesn't have blowback but the gun is rated at 410 fps the blowback edition is 365 fps.Didn't really know much about BB guns before but now I see that Umarex makes some fine BB guns. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer CO2 air pistol than this one I think. Just seems flawless. It even states on the packaging Glock perfection. I think my next Airgun may very well be an Umerex. Oh and if you really want a blowback (don't think amazon sells the Glock w/blowback) you might consider the Beretta APX by Umarex. But that gun is only rated at 310 fps. All things being equal, if it were me I'd buy the Glock again in a heartbeat :)

I like how the ejected cartridges form what you could only call a stream! At least on camera.

Amazing what the Swiss could and can come up with. 1026 9mm rounds per minute, cheap, simple and easy to use.

Is there anywhere I can read more about this series of guns? A desultory search came up with nothing.

This seems excellent for such a old gun, even thought the r.o.f. is so high the recoil seems reasonable. Honestly, for a 9mm, as long as it doesn't jam often and have fire selector, over 1000 rpm full auto is the way i would like to go.

Even with that rate of fire (and I'd hate to question the Swiss when it comes to counting things, but that seemed suspect to me) it's not surprising that it's controllable. Stock axis and bore are very close, everything is aligned parallel to line of fire. Compare that to something like the Thompson which Ian has shown really likes to climb when fired. Great series.
