The long wait is over. I was contracted to build this railroad before the covid shutdown, but the client and I have both suffered delays beyond our control. In the first installment, I built the benchwork for the low level staging yard. This time, I'll install roadbed, track and wiring.
If you are in the market for a custom model railroad design and/or build, please contact me at: www.superiormodelrailroads.com

Hi Peter, I’m curious as to where you get your foam road bed. I’m starting a new layout and would possibly be interested in using foam instead of cork.

We'll just simply keep calling you the GOAT! Amazing some people build their own layouts and will never even have that much track laid in their lifetime. And that's only one staging! Loved seeing your mom being there with you! I'm sure she's proud of what you've accomplished. The warehouse and the business is doing so well. Her son's an artist. Last but not least glad to see the puppy out there and around. Somebody needs to watch over you!!

First off, ❤ hugs ❤ Hello, ma'am! Second, as I'm watching you build just this tiny portion of the layout, I am struck by the realization that this layout could be one of those "if I had a million" layout designs. The man-hours (and dog-hours) going into this are going to add up fairly swiftly, and that's before the materials and shipping costs. Impressive! Very impressive! ❤

I suppose it is quite an expensive project, although I don't bill anything for the dog-hours - or the mom-hour.

Dear Peter, awesome project, will be interesting to see this layout develop. Already one staging yard with dimensions beyond comprehension, as you said followed by an even larger one on the next level, wow! Cool to see your method of single side wiring, absolutely makes sense especially on such a large footprint. Great so see your mum, although the winter is almost at its end, hope you two had a good time together! Cheerio

At 3:00 I realized that you have magic Dew cans with that one can holding down that incredibly long run of foam. After all of that wiring and the calisthenics that went with it to lay that staging yard I would have been reconsidering the huge shop build, lol. The lower staging yard has more track than a lot of peoples entire layouts. With the shipping and exposure that this layout will endure are you nailing any of the rail down or still just relying on the glue? If just glue, please share the type that is holding the track to the foam. This is going to be incredible. Please tell Mom I said hello and that she is a KZfaq sensation.

You can never have too much staging on a railroad designed for intensive operation. A layout where the staging capacity is the limiting factor tends to get clogged up too easily. Also, most modelers tend to accumulate far more cars and locomotives than they initially expect.

Nice straight benchwork, Looks like this client plans on running some very long trains.....
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 ай бұрын
For an operating layout, it's important that the staging track length is not the limiting factor. On my personal layout in Michigan, the staging track length needed to be considered for every train in the schedule and it would only take one operator putting a train in the wrong track to bring the whole layout to a standstill.

No, two years in a hotel half-way around the world isn't an option. It's all built in 7' sections that can be stood on end in a shipping container and then reassembled on site.

Nice. Yankee here in Virginia USA near Washington DC. I'm using Peco code 83 north American style track, #6 in my yard and #8 on mainline sidings or crossovers. #8 in the yard is nicer but where space is limited, you can squeeze in longer yard tracks with #6. My basement isn't huge. You have nice long yard track! I used Homasote, a pressed paper product that comes in 4x8' sheets 1/2 inch thick. It holds spikes or track pins well. With 2 1/4 inch track center you probably could squeeze in another yard track!
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 ай бұрын
Yes, I could have got one more track in with 2 1/4" track centers - or 2 mote with 2" track centers, but that extra bit of finger room between tracks is extremely valuable in the unlikely event that there is ever a derailment deep in the yard. Sacrificing that last track was a conscious decision, not an accident.

I’m curious to see how/where this super long section is to be sectioned for shipping. Obviously, there are a lot of wires to be cut and re-connected. Will the upper staging yard be physically connected to the lower one, and, if so, then how does that affect the sectioning for shipping. Awesome work!
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 ай бұрын
The two staging yards are built separately. Keeping them together would waste a lot of space in the shipping container. I've shown my wiring methods on previous builds.

I love watching your progress on your builds; however, I wish you would get a stand for your camera and show us more of the actual work as you’re doing it - without you holding the camera. For example, I would have liked to have seen how you attached the feeder wires to your bus wires, or how you soldered the wires to the rail, or hooking up the switch machines underneath. If I am not mistaken, 100% of this video was you holding the camera. I would like to see 70% of the video with camera on a tripod as you are working, and 30% of you holding the camera showing us your progress.
@mpeterll

Filming my work in real-time would make for a long boring video, even if my camera didn't automatically switch off after a few minutes. Furthermore, It would many hours to edit each one - time I cannot afford to commit. The nearest I could reasonably do would be a time-lapse. Some time ago, I posted time-lapse videos every week for almost a year and they were my least popular videos.
