In the early 1970s I attended a lecture given by Jean Kennedy, then the Norwich archivist. She said that she had had a letter from a family in Australia who were enquiring about a relation of theirs who was thought to have been hung in Norwich for sheep-stealing in the 1860s, and asking whether she could confirm the story. Jean told us that she had easily traced details of the case but that it had involved a gruesome murder with body parts deposited in different places in the city and so she wrote back saying that she could find no details of executions for sheep stealing in Norwich. I guess it is the same case. David Stoker

@@sarahadair7320 small towns especially have a lot of interesting skeletons hidden. (As well as a lot of small town nepotism). And about might be surprised if you look into some local history. My tiny town in Indiana just across from Louisville KY was often a passageway for underground railroad. We have an all black cemetery (being neglected) which closed in 1853. Also being across the river from Louisville we had ties to Capone. A sleak easy across the Ohio River with a back exit and false walls!

If they were bankrupt, how did he have 400 pounds! And why wouldn't he need to live on that and instead give it to a pawn broker?! And why wouldn't Mr. Christie give them own money back?! That's crazy! And why wouldn't he give it to the guy's wife? Ok, there's something I'm not getting from this story.
@alittlebitofhistory
@alittlebitofhistory 3 жыл бұрын
I will be 100% honest I'm not sure where it came from, It might be a case of he decaled himself bankrupt while still having money that he then hid to keep it safe by giving it to his boss for safe keeping, back then if the money wasn't in a known bank account or in your own home it would be next to impossible to find. Why Mr Christie wouldn't give it back there is 2 reasons that come to mind, it might be he realised that William was bad with money and the more he gave him the quicker he would go though it or possibly as pawn brokers were not exactly the most trust worthy people in the Victorian era he had pretty much spent it all himself or used it in his business.

A very interesting if somewhat disturbing and macabre story of a heinous act of barbaric murder, a murder that if he had been of a stronger disposition he would have gotten away with, especially as the police were inept, lazy, or both, and the surgeons were just as bad, although they might be excused somewhat as forensic science wasn’t exactly at the pinnacle of expertise that it is today, but I am glad his conscience got the better of him. Why does the narrator keep pronouncing gaol as gowl ? Is it because they only know the american spelling jail ? Up to the 1970's it was still acceptable to spell jail as gaol, but as the yank spelling became the norm the Brit spelling lost it's use totally . Oh well next it'll be colour spelled color .
