Thank you! Yes, now that the Beginners Guide is moving forward and closer to a conclusion, I would like to focus more on form there, and leave tactics in this kind of videos. ;-D

I have no formal training in fencing (HEMA if you prefer), other than reading a couple of books, watching YT of course and a wooden dummy in my backyard. I have spoken in person and online with people respected in the community but I have one question itching me that I always wanted to ask but somehow always overlooked in such conversations, maybe I just got overwhelmed about the situation. My question is this: why is there no lateral movement (or extremely little if there is) in HEMA, why is the torso so rigid so much of the time if not always? It seems to me that the only footwork is reduced to forward and backward steps, torso movement is almost non-existent and the entirety of the fight/duel consists of sword movement. And I see this both in tournament videos on youtube as well as regular videos from people sparring/training. I would say that to a casual viewer HEMA is little more than olympic fencing - tagging the opponent with a light touch, small steps back or forth and that is it. I ask this as an aficionado of unarmed martial arts (karate, kickboxing) and I know the importance of mobilizing your whole body in a fight and moving not just back and forth but also around your opponent. I know that the presence of the sword changes some variables by comparison to unarmed fighting but it just seems odd to me, coming from an unarmed fighting background. Sorry for making this post so long, but I would really appreciate your personal opinion on this. Thank you in advance. Have a nice day!

Hi, well the torso movement is there, just not you are searching about probably! If you check my sparring video you will notice that to create the space for some cuts or power up parries I rotate my torso. Moving the torso to the sides instead, like a boxing dodge for example, while cutting, brings away a lot of structure and cutting/parrying power from the sword to gain some cms of angle. Again, the movement is mainly linear while out of measure, but when landing the cut or the thrust there is room for side movements to exit from the danger zone. Every other side movement before that moment is generally compensated by the opponent which have all the time in the world to adopt the new line. While instead, while throwing the attack, a side movement is a good option. HEMA may result as sport fencing because sport fencing, with a better set of rules and better weapons (to decrease the flick possibility) would look like a sporty-18th century Smallsword duel. In terms of intensity level, I would say many cuts we throw at each other could be really incapacitating, and bruises are (sadly or not) a regular companion for a HEMA fencer. The sword changes many things if we talk about unarmored fighting, which HEMA represent, If you ever cutted yourself with a knife, think about a 1.3 meters long knife accelerating toward your wrist! Eheh! The best advice I can give you is, try it out at your local HEMA club. Judging from a video is not clear.

And BTW, I had a bone micro fracture on my medium finger caused by an Epee fencer just 6 months ago. Modern fencing looks touchy ‘till you receive your first flick, eheh.

Last fing I forgot to mention is little cuts: There is room for tiny cuts everywhere, especially to prepare the opening for the strong cut. Think them like jabs to prepare the cross or hook. That said, I hope I answered your questions. Cheers.

@@FedericoMalagutti I just remembered watching a video of a sparring session between two gentlemen with heater shields and arming swords, about a couple of weeks ago, and I remember being quite surprised at the mobility they had - a lot of side-steps, stance height variations and much more torso movement that longsword drills. I imagine that the shield does change a lot in how one carries the fight. Thanks again. Good evening.
