My sister went to Thailand and all the kids had English "names" that were really just words or letters. Like there was a family of six kids named "A" through "G". Other kids she met were named "Arm", "Leg", "Cook" and "Beer". When she was leaving she met some college students in the airport and one was named "Ilovesky" pronounced I Love Sky.

My Taiwanese friends (from the Chou family from Kaoshiung) introduced themselves to me when I was 13 years old and I was a classmate of one of them in High School in Buenos Aires, Argentina with their Chinese names. As the years went by they began to use names in Spanish, but I never wanted to call them like that. I still call them with their Chinese names because for me that is what their parents called them when they were born and that is how they should continue to be called. It seemed to me that they were ashamed of having Chinese names and I didn't like that. One of my friends explained to me that Argentinians sometimes mispronounced their names and then those names began to have another meaning and they sounded coarse and sharp in their ears. I still always call them by their Chinese names and they usually say that I am the only real friend they have in my country. Most of the family returned to Taiwan and only my schoolmate stayed here.

Hi, great video! If I may make an observation, I think Taiwan need to update their English names pretty soon. The names are also getting older. It is strange when you meet foreigners and your name to them is from their grandparents' generation.

How interesting. When I was a kid, all of my asian classmates had English names as well as their Asian names. They used their English names for school so they could fit in better with other classmates and teachers to pronounce their name as easy as possible and to avoid being bullied because of their "funny sounding Asian name". And the Asian students would use their Asian names at home only with their parents. Most of the Asian students wanted to be as American as possible so they preferred using their English names.

That's actually sad. I moved to a European country but use English as a daily communication language. However, I never have an English name even if my Chinese name is kinda hard for the local people to pronounce. I think people should not be ashamed of their original name, and even if they changed their names but sill they can't change their skin color. People would still know that they are from Asian countries and their English names are not the original names. So what's the point of using an English name? Maybe for the convince of pronunciation, but still pronunciation of names can be taught.

Why can’t Chinese people teach us to pronounce their Chinese names correctly? It’s a little ridiculous for them to adopt English names from an Indian point of view. A little suggestion, please make a video on how to pronounce some common Chinese personal names. I will be really grateful and happy to call my Chinese friends their real names rather than their adopted English names.

As a Chinese-American, I think your comment comes off as quite rude. The problem is not that Chinese people “can’t” teach others to pronounce their Chinese names correctly, and I don’t see why it’s “a little ridiculous” for them to adopt English names. Although you may be happy to call your Chinese friends by their real names, the truth is that the vast majority of people don’t speak Chinese. Chinese is difficult to pronounce, so most people would probably butcher Chinese names and find them hard to remember. For many Chinese people, using an easy-to-pronounce English name would be easier not only for others, but also for themselves. Furthermore, Chinese people may not want you to use their real names. Many of them consider their Chinese names to be more “private”, as the woman at 4:08 says, so they may feel uncomfortable if they’re not close to you, yet you insist on using their Chinese names. I recently read this post that gives more insight on this issue: parksanddeserts.tumblr.com/post/629045930315956224/in-my-linguistics-class-we-had-a-chinese-girl-who Basically, no one is obligated to teach others to pronounce their name in their native language. When people know that it takes too much effort to do that, please respect their wishes to use another name or a nickname.

@@elanaho3460 I am sorry if my comment came across as rude. It’s just that I like to call my Chinese friends by their real names even if I don’t get the pronunciation right. At least I get to practice it until I get it right. Now that you have explained it clearly that due to cultural or personal reasons Chinese people may not like to share their real names unless it’s their close friends or family. Thank you for your explanation. 🙏🏾
