It was not an occupation, it was a civilization where all races and religions co existed and thrived in harmony. Muslims, Christians, Jews and others lived under the justice of Islamic rule. If it was an occupation like you said, then the original inhabitants would've been evected, which they weren't. Instead, they were allowed to stay and practice their religions freely.
