One thing about Gaunter O'Dimm that's important to remember, is that he's the only character in the entire Witcher series that appears to be fully aware of us. He deliberately makes eye contact with the camera several times to ensure we know he sees us. Truly amazing.

What I love most about Gaunter’s portrayal is how incredibly grounded he is. The man dresses up like a lowly merchant, his physical appearence is not that different from any other NPC in the world at first glance and talks in a pretty normal manner compared to most characters in the series, even though he’s arguably the most powerful entity there is. His cunning deception is one of his greatest strengths and it helps him to manipulate his victims. Best part is he probably doesn’t have to do any of that given his powers, he just fancies toying with lesser creatures and that is undoubtedly malicious

People talk about Gaunter stopping time, but if you pay close attention to the scene in the inn, you can actually see the flames are still burning naturally in the fireplace (the shifting and changing pattern of the shadows on the walls) meaning he didn't stop time, he merely froze the living creatures in the inn in their place.

Gaunter is probably the closest we get to a full on god in the witcher but with the signature witcher realism behind it so it isn't good nor bad just an asshole

This is 100% the most evil and misterious entity I've ever seen in a videogame since the G-man.

I love the idea of geralt realising who cursed Marlena and the idea that gaunter is just watching him and taking great enjoyment from watching him still beat his riddles

He's up there with the best character ever created in a video game CD could not have wrote his character any better. The voice actor absolutely sold it also. You really feel like it's the Devil. Also, one thing worth mentioning, in the majority of the cutscenes with Master Mirror, someone almost always says "devil" on the ship the guy next to you in the cell said it, in the bar the guy who's soup he spiked also said "what the devil?" He's Lucifer in the Witcher universe. Master Mirror (G.O.D) Mirror of God.

O'dimm deserves to be the main plot point of an entire game..

Hi Wisefish man, I wanna to add a little thing to Master Mirror's final riddle in Heart of Stone. The mysterious Cat and Dog in von Everec's Manor told geralt to "seek salvation in the mirror (or glass) that cannot be broken". I think that's how Geralt solved that riddle. Great video as always.

His GWENT expansion pack trailer's description confirms that he ultimately controls how the story of the Witcher world plays out, and every event in it was wrought by him (which will include the Conjunction of Spheres i.e. the fusion of infinite universes). He really is the G.O.D.

Mannnnnnnnn, I was listening to his theme yesterday and thought to myself that you should do a video on Gaunter O'Dimm lol. Cheers, mate! Especially excited for this one :D

Just rewatched this and even with many things i cant remember from the game, i had a thought. Many people point out, how Gaunter is very polite to Shani and mostly rude to his contracts. He truly just mirrors his counterparts in every interaction. Rude and cold to Olgierd, direct and determined to Geralt, puzzling and scheming for the professor. And just so, every contract/wish fulfillment is targeted at his potential victim, which traps them specifically: -The professor is trapped in his fear of Gaunter and the interest about his true nature. He wanted to be safe against Gaunter's schemes, who would have had no influence without this contract or his interest over him. (I suspect he could have left the circle at any time and would have been fine.) -Olgierd wanted an easy solution for all his problems. But this easy way out took every joy out of him(such a classic trope btw.). And after that, he just tried again and again to drown himself in the simplest and easiest pleasures. Oh and couldn't be honest with his brother, even after his death. No real effort for his wishes and dreams. You know what i mean. -Geralt on the other hand works hard for his goals and doesn't loose his wit in dangerous times. A strong and healthy "soul" is of no interest to Gaunter O'Dimm(this is also true for Shani and maybe even for the old woman at the wedding). But since he needs Geralt for his contract with Olgierd, he arranges for the situation where Geralt has to owe him a favour. But even with his help, Geralt has to work for his freedom, because thats just how he is. The true test for Geralt in his contract is about his morality, where he has to decide who the bigger monster is. Olgierd or Gaunter O'Dimm. This is btw. a really good RP element. If you think that Olgierd is the bigger monster you just let Gaunter take his soul. And vice versa. Just a thought, but maybe the man who won his soul back from Gaunter didn't outwit him. Maybe the drawbacks of his fulfilled wish gave him an insight about his problems so he could nurture his "soul" to a point where Gaunter had no more interest in it. One definite lesson is, that there are no shortcuts for problems.

The reflection in the pool just reminds me of Vilgefortz, when he kept saying the line about mistaking the reflection of the stars in a pool for the night sky, and it just made me think, Gaunter O’Dimm is what Vilgefortz was aspiring to be imo

I personally believe he's some sort of eldrich god. Something like Nyarlathotep or the Great Ones from Bloodborne, only in human form. You learn a lot more about him from texts in the standalone Gwent game, but I believe that he does what he does not because he is evil, but because he is not human and so does not have a human's sense of morality. He merely nudges people and reflects them simply to sate his curiosity of what will happen. Truly neutral in the grand scheme of things, but horrifyingly powerful, much like how an insect might view a human. I believe he puts the restrictions he explains to Geralt on himself merely as a way to avoid getting bored. He is all-powerful, uncaring, and unknowable, not because he's the devil or evil incarnate, but simply because he is so completely and utterly above us, and may very well be of a nature so alien we could never hope to understand him beyond what he tells us. I know Blood & Wine is impressive, beautiful, practically another game entirely. For me though, Heart of Stone is peak Witcher 3. Its the best storyline, the best characters, and has the sharpest dialogue. Gaunter is one of my favorite villains ever, and my favorite depiction of the devil, all time. Every scene with Olgierd is fantastic. He seems cool at first, then you fear him, then you hate him, then you feel sad for him, and eventually you pity him. Its so good. Even Shani is my favorite. I think its my favorite DLC for any game, ever.

gaunter o dimm is the devil, the second time you meet him is at a crossroads which is something the devil is known for. he is a god like being, he feeds on souls and gets joy from pain and suffering, hes truly one of the scariest, and most evil villains in any lore in my opinion

If he can't beat me in Gwen i don't care how powerful he is~ But when you think about it O'dimm isn't truly evil,he reflect a person ugliest side to them,it might be for his amusement but he's honest because as we can see from the end of HoS his rules also applied to him to keep the game fair.

Gaunter didn't give Shakeslock a blessing, he gave him a curse. He didn't give him a gift, he gave him a prison. Shakeslock was only safe within the circle, meaning he'd die if he left the circle. Nothing Gaunter gave him was good. Gaunter gave him constant fear in protection or death. Gaunter twisted another wish in a cruel manner

Honestly I feel like they could make Gaunter the antagonist of the next game, if they wanted to of course

I’ve always bien in love with the concept of a deal with the devil But g.o.d is just perfect. He’s so scary yet you never feel treated by him because you know your following the rules and playing the game You always know that you’re dancing in the edge of the blade and I love it

I also love that hes in the background of a lot of cut scenes throughout the expansion, and the first time I played I didnt see him once because i didnt know that and my second playthrough I thought i was seein things when i noticed him dressed as one the guards who confront you at one point, gave me chills

When geralt asked about o dimms name, gaunter "spared" geralt because knowing his name would have left geralt with either being dead or even suffer a worse fate. Shakeslock was probably on the precipice of knowing Gaunter's real name. Gaunter stopped him with the circle curse, because had shakeslock discovered his name...his name would be known by many others. How could Gaunter play his games if everyone who inquired about him knew him? Awsome game btw!

The assertion that he is evil clashes with the fact that he never lies or cheats. The only time he ever seems to act disproportionately is when he sticks the spoon in the drunk's eye, and his statement "That's the last time you interrupt me." heavily implies that more happened than we see. He likes Shani and even gives Geralt free advice to win her over. Master Mirror only appears evil when someone evil is looking at him.

Best written villain in all of gaming.

What if he is a reflection of GOD or to be more precise the opposite of GOD. It is said that the devil mimics miracles and puts on a facade as GOD to spite him. Wouldn't be surprised if he would use an acronym for a name to also spite the name of GOD.

The only thing not talked about is the breaking of the wooden spoon mentioned in the spotted wight quest. Gaunter does this for Geralt as well to "free" him from the ship, and kills a man with a wooden spoon.

We may never know how many victims have outsmarted gaunter except geralt. What surprised me was how gaunter spoke in a tongue.

"A master mirror" "No blow can harm me" A reflection...in the water. I have a theory that he has rules he has to follow. Like the how hes powerful but cant just strait up take souls. I also think one of the rules is that when defeated he has to announce certain things like his lines at the end but theres no rule about what language the info is in. He might be like a powerful evil water spirit, representation entity, or portfolio style demi-god left over from and unknown pantheon. Or even a simple guy that figured out the "code" to that universe. all of which would make for interesting story potential. last note: Im not sure he full blown stops time. I think he just stops most movement in the area at that moment cause when he puts the fly in that soup it continues to float around, that and the way the people there look more like their holding place than stuck.

I know what he is. Guanter o dimm or master mirror or man of glass is from mirror on the wall who grant the evil queen wishes and answer her question (who is the fairest of them all). Guanter riddle game to challenged Geralt give you clues. I thought Guanter is Rumble Stilskin or genie and he is not god, not soothsayer, not demon. Guanter is an awesome creature in the witcher world.

Personally i think Gaunter O'Dimm is an incredibly powerful warlock who likely got trapped in this dimension during the conjuction of the spheres. Gonna assume he's from a magical order much much higher than what humans and elves could attain.

He’s such an intelligent character. I wanna know all of his secrets, but would probably be disappointed if I knew the truth. That’s the appeal of a mysterious character. The guessing and speculation is where all the fun is. Lol

Desire and or lust/longing. Everyone lusts or desires something. But when it's gained it's never in a positive or benevolent way. You could say he's one of the princess of hell Azmodon from the Diablo series.

We don't know that he can control everything in the universe. His power over time may be isolated to a localized area. He may only be able to manipulate time on earth or even only in one place on earth. His penchant for deception while at the same time refusing to violate his oaths may be indicative of a limitation. He may himself be the pawn of a being or beings greater and more powerful than himself who force him to operate within certain, unbreakable parameters. We assume that he keeps his oaths simply because it's more fun for him to do so, but he has proven to be incredibly deceptive, so we really have no justification for assuming such things. It might also be that he is a spirit of some future age either created or released upon the earth by some massive, future catastrophe. Or he could be a very powerful mage from some future time where mankind has blended technology with magic to produce exceptionally powerful results. For example, he could be a future mage who tapped into some sort of quantum fluctuation where he now finds himself able to travel forwards and backwards in time. We just don't know. We aren't given enough information. All our knowledge about him is just guesswork at best.

The most terrifying being we have yes seen in the witcher series, a chaotic neutral god above all vampires demons and men.

As Slavic I would say Gaunter is inspired by typical slavic folklore fairytales, where hero is dealing with "čert" (in czech). Hero is trying to reverse some pact with čert, because he traded his soul for wealth etc. and now he is trying to save himself. Čert can be translated as devil or krampus in german which is more close in appearances i would say. Čert as a evil creature dates back to pagan times and then shift to christianity as a hell dweller under Lucifer or whatever is your name for "christian" devil.

In the Witcher ending when you come across the dwarfs who stole your boat on the Isle of Mists, there’s some dialogue in which the dwarves tell Geralt the merchant who bought their stolen golden chalice was a Master Mirrory. Why O’Dimm is interested in their golden chalice or putting coin in the scheming dwarves pockets I’ll never know. Clearly the man gets off on people’s suffering. Gaunter banishing Vlodimir was quite haunting, considering my Geralt told O’Dimm he didn’t have to hurt Vlodimir and he just responded. “I know, but I could.” Along with O’Dimm spending the entire party trying to demean and demoralise said dead man. Like, where does he get off? Get a life, O’Dimm.

Imagine getting a DLC in Cyberpunk revolving around a character thats basically O'Dimm just appearing as a different person. Its basically confirmed that these 2 universes are intertwined by Ciri so just imagine how fucking cool something like this could be.

Finally someone who agrees on my interpretation on him. There's no known gods or devils in this world. Only conjunction of spheres brought together two worlds, humans and world of world of magic and monsters, even immortal and always existing ones (like higher vampires). Why would CDPR bring the most powerful of beings in this world, if they are not in the books? As you said, this guy is probably a higher demon or something, with powers of old folktales from middle ages in Polish areas. TLDR: As I said, an immortal creature like higher vampires. Most likely higher demon or similar.

I'll be honest, I threw Olgir to Gaunter. For whatever you can say about him, Gaunter always honors his contracts. And pissing of something like him seems like a fast way to get a fate worse then death.
